I'll say it again - any AD at a major football school like Florida that hires a coordinator with no HC experience is an idiot. Very, very few coordinators make the transition smoothly, it's a very different job.

Butch has a ton of baggage. He's a talking head now for one of the networks (ESPN, I think). I've seen him on a couple of the shows talking about the playoff commitee's rankings. He doesn't come across as particularly likeable. Not that that's a deal-breaker for a coach.
I doubt seriously anyone rolls the dice with Butch. He and Mack Brown can deny all they want about knowledge of the academic improprieties in the basketball and football programs while they were at UNC. Common sense says they had to have some idea it was going on.

I think Foley is probably targeting Gundy. Don't know if it makes sense, but after the dismal offensive production the last several years at Florida, I think he wants someone who can put points on the boards and excitement in the fan base.

Weeks ago in one of the speculation threads about UF and WM Gus was mentioned. I don't know how credible his name associated with the search might be, but it'll sure make the Barners squirm and that'll be fun to watch!

Butch Davis was cleared of any official role in the Carolina mess. But that's a joke. After all, it was a mere coincidence that the woman who tutored his kids also was indicted for providing thousands of dollars in benefits to the players. His radioactive half life won't lessen for years, if ever.

I think Foley reaches out to the A-list guys first, guys like Stoops, Malzahn, (Briles?), etc. I suspect none of them will be willing to leave their current positions.

After that it gets interesting, but I would love to see a major program's boat get rocked by their coach going to UF.

What can I say, the gnashing of teeth makes it fun...

I know everyone has their opinions, but I really think Stoops is a possibility. It just seems to make sense from all sides - OU's recent "good but not great" years might make it appealing for Stoops. And, he could probably dominate the SEC East right now. He's familiar with Florida and the recruiting grounds down there.
Names like Malzahn, Briles, Sumlin, etc., don't really make sense - they're just big names. Stoops kind of makes sense though. If I'm Foley, I'm calling Stoops and making him say yes. I don't expect Stoops to be the guy. But, I wouldn't be shocked.

Oh, I agree - Stoops made himself a candidate when Bama was looking. I honestly believe part of his SEC hatred is that we didn't pursue him but went after CNS instead. I think there's a chance he goes, but I think it's less than 50%.

I've heard that UF has contacted Bob every time they've had an opening since Spurrier left. And yet, they're 0-fer in landing him. Maybe he's ready for a move now.

Maybe he's tired of acing those vaunted B12 offenses he likes to prattle on about. I mean, he's lost as many games to B12 offenses in the last three years as Saban has lost in total in the last six years...

I honestly think Stoops is scared to coach in the SEC. He knows how much easier he has it in the B12.

I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Muschamp stay at UF as the DC depending on who is hired as HC.

Re: Butch Davis: That's not even a name worth mentioning. Literally a waste of time and keystrokes.

Re: Bob Stoops: Had he wanted the Florida job, he would have taken it in 2001, 2004, and 2010. He's not leaving a cushy job at a program like Oklahoma to jump into the frying pan of the SEC.

Re: Mike Gundy: I bet he'd take the job, just don't know if Florida is willing to take him, though I tend to doubt it.

Re: Doc Holliday: If this is the hire for Florida, it will be just as underwhelming as the Dooley hire for Tennessee a few years back.
