Army-Navy date could be problematic

The College Football Playoff's management committee will discuss Navy's eligibility for this season's New Year's Six bowls because of the academy's new conference affiliation and the timing of its annual game against Army.

Navy will join the American Athletic Conference in the fall.

The commissioners' concern is if the Midshipmen are ranked high enough to earn one of the New Year's Six bowl bids -- and then lose the following week to Army. That loss would not count toward Navy's final ranking, penalizing other teams that would have earned a New Year's Six bowl bid if the loss was factored in.

I understand the tradition (I am a Navy vet) but I also see the point. We can't just give out free passes to everyone. Only Notre Dame is in that category  Seriously, if we make special rules for ND, then why not someone else? And if someone else, then why have rules at all?

If Navy plays well enough up to that point to be considered for a New Years Day Bowl, I have no problem granting them an exception. I think the service academies have earned the right to be treated special. Besides, it's a bowl game, not life and death.

Who decided when "selection sunday" was...

That's right, the mighty ESPN.

Just move the stupid selection show back one week, at least for the New Years six... problem solved. This is a media created problem.

Unfortunately, if everything stays the same then they should not be eligible IMO. What if they are just squeaking in the playoffs one year, bumping Bama out and then go an lose to Army the next week. I think there would be many, many angry posts on this board if that were to happen. It's quite simple, to be eligible for a New Years bowl or the CFP, you must complete all games before the selection show. ASU had to change the day of the Turkey Day Classic to be eligible for the FCS playoffs, so I see no difference here.

The standard schedule nowadays is 12 games. Navy and Army both play their 12th game well after all other conferences play their championship (13th) game. I get tradition, but the two academies can't expect the rest of the NCAA to wait on them. Nor should they expect the rest of the NCAA to ignore the outcome of their last game. They either need to move it up or expect to get left out.

Army & Navy wanted the Army-Navy game to be the only game that day. They brought this on themselves.

Army and Navy are being given an extra week of participation that none of the other schools are given, or would be given. There is no way that should be allowed to effect either of them in a positive manner. If the extra week effects either of them negatively, then so be it.

My God, when was the last time either team played on New Years Day? I sure don't remember it.

1964 maybe?

Wow, there is something you don't remember!

The service academies were top dogs during WWII.. they had all the best players. Possibly the last time they played on New Years.

Simple, Army needs to join the same conference, no need to remain an independent.

If Army joined the AAC, the game would be a conference game and they'd have to move it up so they could have the conference championship game.

The AAC championship game really doesn't mean anything other than one of the teams may get the Pinstripe Bowl and the other the Boise Bowl. Or better yet, have an Independent Conference with all 4 independents, they have to play every team in the conference and the two highest rated play again in the ICC game. :rolleye2:

1. Notre Dame gets "special" privileges concerning the Playoff and New Year's Day bowl.

2. ACC just decried that they will pretend BYU is a Power Five opponent to increase their Power 5 schedule.

3. CBS/Navy/Army wants Navy to have" special" privileges for New Year's Day bowl games.

4. The Big 12 wants everyone to grant them "special" privileges for a playoff game.

5 NCAA give a bunch of schools (see UAB) "special" privileges in attendance requirements to remain in FBS.

These five are not all "special" exemptions in the pipeline, but you so see the trend, don't you?

Back to my original post: Why have rules at all if you are going to hand out a bunch of exemptions?

I see why they were concerned about only Navy. Army has never played in a New Year's Day Bowl game! Navy has played in but five, the last being 01/01/1964 in the Cotton against Texas.

Army and Navy are being given an extra week of participation that none of the other schools are given, or would be given. There is no way that should be allowed to effect either of them in a positive manner. If the extra week effects either of them negatively, then so be it.

This is hilarious in light of the fact that not one player at those academies is a pro prospect and they're much more limited than the average player due to extra duties. Hey, it goes with it but it's no advantage.

I know this won't happen, but whoever is in charge the NCAA, Selection Committee or the member conferences needs to set firm guidelines for the 129-124 FBS schools in order to qualify for a bowl game and inclusion in the Final 4. These guidelines do not seem to be unfair or penalize any particular team. All teams play under the same set of rules.

1. Every team must be in a conference, no exceptions.
2. Every conference must have a championship game, no exceptions.
3. Any team with less than 7 wins will not be bowl eligible.

Wow, there is something you don't remember!

The service academies were top dogs during WWII.. they had all the best players. Possibly the last time they played on New Years.

I don't remember it because it was before I was born.

:)

I'm good but I'm not THAT good!!!

I was thinking, "I don't ever recall Army OR Navy playing on New Year's Day." In fact, about the only Army bowl games I remember are that it was a big deal when they made the Cherry Bowl (1984 I think - wasn't paying much attention because we were 5-6 that year) and when we played them in the 1988 Sun Bowl.
