New coach search...

Where did the Friday deadline come from? Like I said before I haven't heard ANY of this stuff people are posting from official sources. ALL speculation. I heard that CGM and his family were here yesterday. Was it officially announced? Heard he was in Texas today. Is that officially being mentioned. The speculation is running wild all over the place at this point. There isn't much else we can do other than wait because we don't know squat.

I believe it came from BoL. I'm monitoring 3 sites and most of the information that seems to be credible is coming from BoL. I'm not an insider so I don't know what information they are releasing to their subscribers. I'm speculating just like everyone else is and I've never tried to present anything that I post as insider information. I try to glean as much information as I can, make judgments based on past coaching searches, weed out the obvious garbage, and come up with what I think is happening. Plus I'm trying to be optimistic and not be swayed by the rumor of the moment. At this point as far as I can tell the word is that we (UA AD) is still confident that become the next basketball coach at UA so that is what I'm going with at the moment until I hear otherwise from someone more credible than Pat Forde and his ilk.

Shula part 2. You don't hire someone because of their last name, I would have assumed that we learned our lesson. An Rrichard Pitino hire would not excite me at all.
I've thought way too much about this. Pitino makes absolutely zero sense. The only thing that makes sense in my mind is some Alabama people (not "official" Alabama people) leaked that in order to push Marshall to make a move. He was someone who would be "believable" but it wouldn't matter if we ticked him off by not actually being interested.

A friend of mine lives in Kansas. He's commented before that if you take the land area of Kansas and compare it to the highest and lowest points, it is literally flatter than a pancake. OTOH, the high point in Kansas is still higher than Mt. Cheaha.
This is a little misleading, John. From about the middle on to the west, KS starts to tilt upwards and the highest point is right at the CO border. There's little sense, though, of climbing all the way to Denver. I've crossed it on I-70 probably a couple of dozen times. Further south, it's the same situation, crossing west TX to NM, but it appears, unlike KS, to occur in a series of giant steps...

There's not much to know except there must still be some interest. What's causing the silence, no one knows exactly, but it seems to be pretty feasible to believe that it is his family in some way, shape, or form. The talk of deadlines, contracts, etc., is all rumor.

Misleading for sure, but still interesting info.

Basketball is a little from football on that front. The hours on the job--while long and hard--aren't quite as long as in football, so basketball coaches get to be away from the confines of the practice facility a bit more and be in the community some. Practice times are shorter, there are fewer players to deal with, fewer players to recruit, a smaller staff of assistants to manage, etc. There's a reason basketball coaches are typically better golfers than football coaches.

In football, it has been said many times that the insides of modern, fancy football facilities on campuses look the same. Only the school colors are different. And that's where many coaches spend all the daylight hours, so the rest of the community doesn't matter as much (except for the spouses and families).

which is why I commented that it wasn't a good example for the current discussion, but something that came to mind.

This is a family that has moved before and will undoubtedly move again. The kids may not like it but they certainly must realize that their father works in an industry where successful individuals are presented with opportunities that unfortunately require families to relocate. This delay makes me wonder whether they might be weighing both the quality of life indices ofTuscaloosa and the basketball program at Bama compared to that of Austin or other locale and delaying the process as long as possible until they get the phone call they really want.

Again, we're talking about a family that has moved three times since 1996. The kids have lived in Wichita for 9 years. They have memories there.

I lived in Birmingham for over 8 years. I had to move to Mississippi the summer before my sixth grade year. The move was extremely difficult because of the friendships left behind. Five years later, we moved from Mississippi to Prattville. That move was much easier because I didn't have the same friendships and memories.

If CGM is the competitor he's advertised as being, this is why he'll ultimately leave WS (but maybe not this year):

2015 NCAA Tournament Bids
Missouri Valley - 2
SEC - 5
Big 12 - 7

2014 NCAA Tournament Bids
Missouri Valley - 1
SEC - 3

2013 NCAA Tournament Bids
Missouri Valley - 2
SEC - 3
Big 12 - 5

2012 NCAA Tournament Bids
Missouri Valley - 2
SEC - 4
Big 12 - 6

I understand at some level the allure of Texas over Alabama. Texas is in a basketball conference even though Texas itself is a football school. Alabama is in a football conference and is a football school. Nevertheless, while both schools offer CGM significantly more resources than his current situation, both obviously have warts that in my opinion should give him pause.

Edit: My apologies if I've made any counting errors.

I'm hearing this morning that supposedly the family is headed to Tuscaloosa either today or tomorrow to look around.

I have been to Wichita 7 or 8 times for different conventions and other than its aircraft industry I've never been that impressed with it and would certainly never prefer living there over the Deep South.

Well, I agree moving the kids should be a factor, but these kids' tenures have been longer than the typical coach. Saban's kids have moved more. In fact, if they were army brats, they'd really know what moving is like...

He is from SC and his wife has a master's from CoC, and, with all the years spent at Winthrop, she's no stranger to the culture here...

Battle may have given him a Friday deadline so if he says no, Battle can go the coaches job fair AKA the Final Four.

Kevin Ollie ain't going because of some sort of discrimination against former national championship-winning coaches - or do I have that wrong?

I have a problem with this whole thing being dragged out. I hope his offense isn't as slow as his decision making.

That's kind of what I've been trying to say. Although coaches typically move more than most other professions, Marshall hasn't. His kids aren't used to moving. His son graduates next month, so he would have been in the third grade last time the family moved. A move then is a little easier to make.

Well anyway, with all the speculation I guess we can review what we do know. I might have something wrong, there have been so many false reports and rumors it's hard to tell what's what.

Battle visited Wichita Monday and spend around 8 hours there.
The Alabama position is still open.
The Texas position is still open.
Howland to Miss State.
Barnes to Tennessee
Prohm signed an extension.
Miller signed an extension.
One of Marshall's assistants left to coach another team.

I think maybe the poster that commented about the social consciousness of a 14 year old girl was actually talking about the emotional roller coaster exhibited by posters on this board :)

EDIT: I include myself in this. I have checked this thread probably 20x a day for the last week.

Warning: stay away from the Football Board. Lot's of bad stuff this week...

This thread is so frustrating. I see the post number go up every time I peek at the forum so I have to check the thread but basically get a bunch of nothing.
