That is pretty impressive, both him and her.saw that yesterday. scott was already in very elite territory within the ultra running community, but had backed off the past few years. glad to see him back on top of his game.
crazy averaging almost 50 a.t. miles per day for 46.5 days. those are hard miles.

the record holder before jurek was a woman, jennifer pharr davis who did the trail last year in 46 days 11 hours or so, so scott had some time to dilly dally if he wanted it.
yes it is.That is pretty impressive, both him and her.
Jennifer and I have many common friends, so I heard about it when she did it. Virtually no one else noticed because basically her only support was her husband whereas Jurek had a full support crew. She also did it hiking instead of trail running. Jurek started out claiming that he would beat her record by four days. He was falling so far behind that it looked like he wouldn't even break the record at all, but he pulled three all-nighters in a row to beat the record by three hours.saw that yesterday. scott was already in very elite territory within the ultra running community, but had backed off the past few years. glad to see him back on top of his game.

cool. i haven't met her, but heard a lot of buzz in my little corner of the running world when she set the record. i got to meet jurek 11 or so years ago when he was a race i ran in virginia, near lynchburg. super nice and down to earth guy. until i read about this a couple of days ago, i thought jurek was out of the competitive running.Jennifer and I have many common friends, so I heard about it when she did it. I don't mean to discredit Jurek because it is an incredible feat. But, I also think what Jennifer did is unreal.
Today I resolved the infractions filed against me by Baxter State Park rangers.
The littering charged was dismissed, and rightfully so. I did not litter, not for over 2,189 miles, not at the top of Mount Katahdin.
The group size charge was also dismissed, no surprise there. I checked in at the base of Mount Katahdin with 12 people and that’s all my group ever had.
The consumption of alcohol charge was accepted. I had a couple of sips of champagne. A friend brought the bottle without my knowledge to surprise me and two rangers at the bottom gave him a verbal okay. This is even acknowledged in the formal Baxter State Park ranger statements.
in my experience, state park rangers can be some of the nastiest folks to deal with and the nasty attitude generally flows down from either the head ranger or the state parks dept. i wonder if they showed up in an mrap to stop the lawlessness.3 officers in vests were there to offer that citation? That's pretty ridiculous.
I've been seeing articles lately where they make take Katahdin off the AT because of partying thru-hikers trashing Baxter SP. This guy doesn't exactly fit that type of hiker though.in my experience, state park rangers can be some of the nastiest folks to deal with and the nasty attitude generally flows down from either the head ranger or the state parks dept. i wonder if they showed up in an mrap to stop the lawlessness.

My kids when little had a butterfly net and were in the Shenandoah National Park catching butterflies, looking at them and letting them fly away. The park ranger pulled over told my wife to stop the kids from "molesting the wildlife."in my experience, state park rangers can be some of the nastiest folks to deal with and the nasty attitude generally flows down from either the head ranger or the state parks dept. i wonder if they showed up in an mrap to stop the lawlessness.
ridiculous. i have had some really stupid interactions with rangers at kennessaw and cochran shoals (chattahoochee) both NPS personnel, and also at sweetwater creek state park.My kids when little had a butterfly net and were in the Shenandoah National Park catching butterflies, looking at them and letting them fly away. It scared the crap out of the kids. It made me wonder whether the Ranger was allowed to keep just one bullet in his left breast pocket.ridiculous. i have had some really stupid interactions with rangers at kennessaw and cochran shoals (chattahoochee) both NPS personnel, and also at sweetwater creek state park.
That's just funny right there, I don't care who you areIt scared the crap out of the kids. It made me wonder whether the Ranger was allowed to keep just one bullet in his left breast pocket.
I happen to be staying with a friend in Asheville, NC, who has hiked the entire trail. He stays in contact with a large segment of the thru-hiker community. There is much consternation that Jurek is the last straw on the camel's back. Jurek is dissembling. There is a strict limit of ten people on the mountain at any given time, because of the narrow rocky trail, narrow summit, and, as mentioned above, litter problem. Jurek's "support" crew, a large portion of which was constituted of cameramen, "producers" and PR people far, far exceeded the limit and Jurek knew this before hand. "Sneaking" in champagne was also false. It also was planned beforehand. A large portion of AT hiking community feel that this will result in Katahdin being taken off the AT, which will be a shame...3 officers in vests were there to offer that citation? thanks for the perspective earl. i could fully see the end of his run being a crap show with a bunch of folks trying to be part of his "glory". these days, i generally try to stay on the sidelines when it comes to user group conflicts (e.g hikers vs runners, fisherfolk vs boaters). i have also seen some times where the ptb pit the user groups against each other as they attempt to limit access to public areas even more and i hope this isn't the case with katahdin.I happen to be staying with a friend in Asheville, NC, who has hiked the entire trail.
