News Article: Herbie Drops Bama to #3

This weekly eye test crap makes me laugh and cry at the same time. I mean, really, we will have 8 or nine different #1 teams before the year is out. Just from looks we already have 1. Bama. 2. Oklahoma 3. Clemson. Step right up folks, Herbie and his ilk are waiting to crown a week four #1 ..... and it could be YOU.

Do they really want me to take them as serious sports authorities? Well, so far epic FAIL.

I have always been a little in Galloway's camp as well. If you won the championship last year, and have won everything this year, you have not been "de-throned" and are still number one. There would be exceptions to that for me like if Clempson was playing poorly against weak opponents and squeaking by on dumb luck and bad officiating ... or maybe if it were the Barn, defending a very rare and questionable title

I like Herbie and I think he is as impartial as anyone can be regarding college football. He is always clear that he is talking about "right now, this week" and things will change. I also know he will never count CNS and Bama out of this thing unless we have lost a couple and have obvious problems, at which point, even my Crimson glasses would start to fog up a little. I agree with those who are happy to have that target off our back.

I do not like the idea that the FSU win is now retroactively discounted. Yes, they lost their QB, but Alabama faced and beat what many considered the #2 team going into that game. Just because Alabama took all the wind out of their sails is no reason to diminish the value of that win.

It should not; but if the Noles drop 2-3 the win will disappear in the rear view mirror. And future SEC wins like lSU, barn, vols, etc may not carry the normal influence

Clemson is clearly the best team in the nation right now. They should be #1.
Is it based on the teams they beat or the way they are playing? I take a bit of exception to ranking according to who we think is best, and in doing so overlooking the quality of victories. I suppose you can say the combined Auburn and Louisville wins are better than the FSU win, but if so, not by much...

I understand how good we think a team is matters, but if you start ranked #1, and you beat #3, that's not good enough to hold the position?

It was good enough to hold the position for the first week. I think we were the unanimous number one after the FSU game. However, OU beat OSU and Clemson beat AU the next week while we just looked ok against the other FSU. Clemson beat Louisville at their place this week while we slopped around with CSU. I think these guys go week by week these days instead of holding to the old axiom that teams don't slip any spots as long as they win.

I think the days of "belt mentality" in the polls is over with the playoffs. This stuff is fluid and the current snapshot is probably something like:

1. Clemson
2. Alabama
3. Oklahoma
4. Oklahoma State

And that obviously won't hold up into December.

I don't care where we are now just as long as we're 1-4 at the end of the season.

I think we'd struggle to beat Clemson or Oklahoma right now. I don't know if we could stop either with our D and don't think we could keep up with our O....again RIGHT NOW.

FWIW, I think Herbie is the best analyst in football right now...hands down.

I think most would agree with you, myself included.

I think he is about right. We were not impressive in our win over CSU. Especially in the 4th quarter. My top 5 would be Okla, Clemson, Southern Cal, Psu, Bama. Sorry to drop us to #5, but I just do not think we are a championship team.

Had someone tell me today that Clemson deserved to be #1 because they played and beat Auburn and Louisville back to back while Alabama just beat a "overrated" FSU team and was playing Fresno and CSU while Clemson was playing AU and Louisville. Now I have no problem with anyone ranking Clemson #1. But I had to chuckle at the reasoning that who gets to be #1 should align with the quality of competition on a particular saturday. When we played FSU Clemson was playing an FCS team. Later this season we will be playing a tough game while Clemson and other schools will be playing cupcake games. It all washes out as the season goes on. The "this week" ranking approach might generate discussion, but is pretty meaningless imo.
