QB Competition 2018

Agree with you about Tua's qb ceiling being higher. Out of curosity, do you think Jalen gives us the best opportunity to win the playoff if he plays like he did against Auburn? What if it's true he's lost the confidence of his teammates?
Since you started this big mess  what do you think?

I do. It would be hard for me to imagine him coming in and performing at such a high level to beat a defense like Clemson. As I originally said, I believe Jalen is a winner. Kind of a lot more talented Jay Barker. Probably a poor description and an insult to Jalen. I’m curious if Tua could manage the situation as well as Jalen. It’s just an awful lot to ask. But it was a lot to ask of Cardale Jones too, I guess. I really would just advocate giving Tua an OPPORTUNITY in the spring. He needs to earn it.

You're right of course. Really it should be to our advantage that they have to commit a safety to stop the run, but unfortunately we haven't been able to exploit that often enough. I feel like with our receiving corps we should be able to get a man open against one deep safety on every play, but it doesn't seem to be happening.

I said above I would start Jalen 100%, but I have to admit I have lacked the same enthusiasm as some who were seeing a significant development in JH. I saw glimmers for sure. He definitely improved in keeping his eyes downfield on scrambles, passing downfield more than last year, and he has better chemistry with Ridley this year (last year it was Ardarius he leaned on a lot), but I never saw his deep accuracy improve that much and what I noticed he still didn't anticipate where and when a receiver would be open, so he'd have to wait to see him open, which is often too late. Those are things TT does well and instinctively, so yeah, I can totally see why the coaches would have him ready to go. However whether he can run the offense consistently under high pressure remains unknown, at least to me. The coaches see Tua every day, so if they believe Tua's the best choice then I'd certainly buy that. That would be a hell of a story if it worked, and a hell of an off-season if it doesn't.

(I'll just add that if Tua does win the job this post-season, we better recruit another QB fast because at that point somebody is not going to ride the pine next season. The 2018 QB competition could be settled by January 8th).

Said this from the start. IMO Hurts will be here his full four years. The question is will Tua?

i hold out some hope that Tua will be willing to wait as long as he's getting some time. He knew the situation with Jalen when he came to Bama and that it was pretty likely he'd be in competition with Jalen for at least two if not three years. I'm also sure there are some great stat's out there for how many NFL QBs waited until their 3rd or 4th year of college to be a starter that Saban will continually use to try to bolster Tua into staying, learning, and then getting to show what he has when his time comes. I'm sure there are examples of first round picks who didn't start till later in their college years.

I cannot believe I am going to even mention this name, but one comes to mind, ONE YR STARTER won sec and nc, scam newton. If you can play, and win big 1 year can be all you need to go pro. IF Tua is as good as he looks in the few times we have seen him he could be a BIG play guy. If he comes along, matures and then plays to his talent, he could be great. I do not doubt his talent one bit. Maturity and how he handles pressure is the key. If he learns the full position of QB he could be a deadly QB for us and then pros. Time will tell.

Right now I am just not sure his game readiness is at Jalen's level yet. He has not played enough in tough spots to know what he will do in a crunch. Not saying he may not be ready but very few are with out a little more playing time, and a wider variety of defenses faced with games on the line.I am glad we have 2 such capable QB's, GOD FORBID but if Jalen goes down we have a guy who most likely could still keep us rolling. Not fall down like FSU did when they lost their QB.

Does not matter - he will not wait to play one year if all he is doing is playing mop-up duty QB between now and then. If Tua stays, it will be because he is incorporated into the offense in a meaningful way. If he is not doing so by the end of next season, he is gone. Seriously - gone.

He knows how much talent he has now. It is no longer supposition based on HS play. He has played well enough against SEC teams to know that he can compete with the best QBs in this league. Why would he stay?

Let him play or watch him leave.

You may be right, but he is a truly unusual kid. Doesn't mean he won't leave, but he is not like others in some meaningful ways.

Agreed. I hope and think he will get his chance though. I just can't believe Saban lets him go without at least giving him a chance to play meaningful snaps.

You are probably right. If this time next year he's only been used in mop up duty, he'll probably transfer.

IMO, JH will not be drafted as a NFL qb unless he undergoes some major growth as a pocket passer. That means he'll probably be in Crimson 4 years rather than 3 and done.

But Tua also has to measure if it's worth going and sitting a whole year. He's surely a better talent than our other qbs who have transferred out but there are no guarantees when you transfer that it works out.

IMO, the most likely thing that could happen with Tua is that if doesn't get the impression that he will get serious PT next year after spring practice he could go ahead and bite the bullet and just sit out next year in order to go somewhere else to have 3 years to play 3.

Scam was a JR. college transfer. No comparison!

Tua didn't come to Bama to sit three years to play one. I'll eat crow if he does.

I think we sometimes think the only thing that motivates these guys is money and a career in the NFL.

Tua came to Bama to play qb and, money aside, that's something BIG. If he chooses to transfer, it's about PT now.

He does not get to decide to sit out a year. That is Saban's call, and Saban is not going to let him sit on Alabama's bench to save time for another program.

Yah after last year's debacle I think he'll keep more players on the hook for longer. Also I really feel, barring a major turn of events, that he's going to get a spring competition and win it.

NO, NO, NO....I meant if he decides to transfer he'd likely do it after spring practice...in other words....he transfer over the summer and sit out next year on another team.

Anyway, that's not the way sitting out a year works anyway in the transfer process...you sit out AFTER you transfer with the new team.

Otherwise sitting on the bench at Bama would buy him a redshirt year, but it wouldn't cover the year he must sit out according the NCAA rules. That means he'd sit two straight year...and that would be silly.

Got it - I think that you have him for at least one more season. His whole family moved here. He will give Alabama at least one more year.

Hopefully it doesn't come to that decision. Don't know if I'd be super excited about a two qb system, but if CNS could manage it and we could win with it I'd be fine with it.

Or, he may just win the job outright.

Just hopefully he gets a fair shake and I think he will!

Haven't read all 956 posts in this thread but I wouldn't be shocked at all if the same scenario which put Jalen on top over Barnett doesn't play out the same way next year with Tua.

Okay, Some don't realize Jalen should have a College degree by next December (2018) or spring (2019) , and can possibility transfer to another school as graduate transfer. Tua knows that he can play 2 years and still get a shot at NFL.

This will all be decided next year, not the year after.
