Nah, I'm with Gray here. We pretty much DO know.

How often do you have a quarterback that wasn't doing much of anything but who suddenly shoots lights out several years into his career? Almost invariably, every QB kinda comes in the league with some decent expectations and either produces or doesn't. Rare is the guy who looks "blah" but then suddenly morphs into something great. YES, it CAN happen but odds are against it.

I mean, the reason he hasn't had a full season is because the coaches who watched him play every day didn't think he was better than whoever they put in front of him. (I'll just use the same thing I say about Colin Kaepernick here.....if he could play effectively, he'd be starting).

I root for our guys, but I just never thought AJ was an NFL quarterback anyway.
The owner and GM of the Bungles also think Marvin Lewis is a good coach. I wouldn't ask anyone on that coaching staff their opinion on players. I would ask Dalton to pass me the rolls at Thanksgiving because it would probably land on the ground or get intercepted.

It sounds like AJ has found a terrible team to show his stuff. He will most likely be a journeyman until he finally hangs it up

To steal from my kids..."Downer much?" We're congratulating one of our own. Can he at least get time to celebrate before being benched? Best of Luck to AJ! RTR!
Just my opinion, but AJ is another in the long line of Alabama QBs who were good at the collegiate level but never carried over to the NFL.

AJ's personality may, at times, leave something to be desired. However the idea that he cannot cut it as a NFL quarterback or "I always knew he wouldn't BLAH BLAH BLAH" is nonsense on stilts.

I think thats how it will turn out myself actually. but gotta give the guy the benefit of the doubt considering he hasnt played an awful lot at all. It's not going to help throwing to the likes of Kelvin Benjamin and Zay Jones. and it doesnt hurt they are paying him backup QB money. it's a risk they can afford to take until they draft their QB

The Bengals are the equivalent of ATM in that they believe their system and organization strategy will eventually work by sticking the square peg into the circle.

To be fair to Dalton, the year he got hurt he was avg 250 passing yards a game with 1.9 to .5 td-int ratio which is very average. AJ that year averaged 122 passing yards pg with a .8 to a .2 td-int ratio. So it wasn’t a night and day difference between Dalton and AJ at Cincinnati like many believe. Cincinnati’s crime with AJ is basically what the Eagles are doing with Foles in asking for a stupid amount for a guy that no one early to mid season last year really wanted or was excited about.

As for AJ. I’ve never seen him as a franchise qb. I’ve always seen him as a Matt Flynn or Ryan Fitzpatrick merc for hire guy. By NFL standards he just is too vanilla. Yeah Brady appears to be similar, but also take into account that Brady and the Pats have been in that system for nearly two decades, and are basically the San Antonio Spurs in that they play boring traditional football. Not many teams play that way anymore.

I think AJ’s best shot at winning a full time job is to have a great first 8 games and have Buffalo looking at a wild card spot. Otherwise I think he needs to expect that he isn’t going to be at places very long due to being traded constantly. But hopefully he gets enough tape to get more folks interested in the future.

I am excited about this move for AJ..not quite sure why the negativity? Was there another spot where he'd be pretty much assured of being the starting qb, at least for part of the season? Ans the Bills made the playoffs last year. Assuming they pick 12th,there is no guarantee AJ won't get to start the entire season.possibly for a playoff team. Dam...I am sure he is thrilled..especially considering how things were going.

Hey..he will finally get his chance. Now let's see what he does with it.

Well first define “cut it”.

If you think cutting is having a good 8-9 years in the NFL as a team to team fill in then I think just about everyone that is a little critical on him believes he will

If you think cutting it means him locking down franchise tag arrangements then I think most people are really skeptical on that when he couldn’t beat out the average of averages qb in the NFL after 4 years and was one of the last FAs to be taken and to a team looking for a cheap bridge qb.

Yeah it’s possible that he could become a face of a franchise but it’s unlikely unless he just lights up the NFL in which there is no data supporting that at the moment.

The Bills are trying to trade up with the #12 pick for a top 5 pick to pursue a qb. So it’s pretty much a guarentee that whoever starts next year is going to have their days numbered.

Re: AJ McCarron Wins Grievance Against Bengals and Will Become Free Agent

Given the situation, he got a very good contract. 2 years, $8.1MM ($6MM guaranteed) with a chance to earn an additional $7MM in playing time incentives. So, if he wins the starting job, he will make $15.1MM during this period and likely land much better future contracts. His worst case is that he has established financial security for his family.

Congrats to AJ, and I hope that he starts.

ETA - The contract may be worth a little more, and it is structured in a way that makes it hard to nail down the real "base", but the most that he can make in the next 2 years is $16.5MM (more than the $15.1MM reported by ESPN).

you still have to be a pretty good QB to even be a career backup in the NFL.

and as we saw this past season with Foles, sometimes a backup is actually better than many of the starters around the league.

there's no knock on a player getting drafted in the 5th round and spending his career as a backup in the league.

Basically, be one of the best 64 quarterbacks, or at least perceived to be, on the planet for the duration of your career.

I would take a lot less and still be really happy . . .

I read that his offer "can" be for one year. If he's able to start this year and has a good year, someone will pick him up after next year. I think most teams concerns were that he hasn't played much at all in over 2 years.

He will get out of the NFL a rich man, his body (and more importantly, his brain) intact, a smoking hot wife, and good looking kids. I'd say that's about as good as you can get.....

AJ is getting his chance. If he is outplayed by a high draft pick then thats on him. But if he plays well enough and keeps the Bills in the playoff hunt he won't be benched. Personally, I hope he comes out and balls and forces the Bills or some other team to sign him to a longer deal as their QB. Not necessarily what I'm expecting but I hope he can pull it off.

Good for AJ. Personally I’m of the mind where I don’t want a player who doesn’t strive to be the starter, especially the QB. Cincy has had literally nothing bad to say about him in half a decade. I’m going to say his mouth was the least of his problem with finding a team. Make the most of it AJ. We’re rooting for ya!!!
