Game Thread: Alabama-Villanova (NCAA Tournament Round 2)

This is the correct call. You don't have to have a posture as if your feet were in concrete...

Yeah the feet thing went out in the 90 s. I can be running and still take a charge. Depends on position. I’m entitled to be where I’m standing. He has possession of that space. Bad call.

Actually, anyone else who thinks the game is being called straight up and we are a bunch of whiners is also invited to leave the thread...

I am not one to get on officials in BBall games because the game moves so fast, but in this game there have been a lot of 50/50 calls and it seems that all have gone Nova's way. There have been a lot of no calls on both ends of the court, which I am fine with, but I hope that Alabama starts to get a few more of these 50/50 calls.

As always, my main complaint is consistency.

Not going to call fouls? Fine.

Going to call every touch? Fine.

Just do it on both ends of the court.

I disagree with someone who said they aren't a good team. Don't just lose 4 games without being pretty good.

Then they are playing terribly today. Even with the help of the refs, Alabama's unforced turnovers and poor FT shooting, they are only up by 5.

Usually, ducking your shoulder will get you called. Not today...

Usually when you hit an opposing player in the back of the head it gets called. Apparently that’s not getting called today either. But I don’t want to sound like an Auburn fan, so maybe I should stop complaining about the refs [emoji6]

This is probably a conversation better suited for a post game thread, but I’ll say it anyways. Part of the problem is more on skill development. Avery has recruited a lot of talent and athleticism, but a lot of the guys come in extremely fundamentally raw. I do think we’ve done a poor job reinforcing fundamental skills, especially in the youngest members of the team.

Screening is definitely a big one, but my bigger concern Is how weak we can be at ball handling. Think about how often we turn the ball over when any of our guys drive. If Jones, or Reese, or even Petty try to take it to the hoop, you can almost predict a turnover coming. Honestly, at times even Sexton and Ingram aren’t much better.

We all know the shooting problems, which also comes back to fundamentals, so that’s not worth going into.

I will give credit where credit is due though. We have gotten significantly better at defensive positioning and pressure defense through the season. Our bigs are also playing like night and day from where they’ve been. So I don’t know that it’s necessarily on Johnson. Sometimes I wonder if we need better position coach focusing on guard fundamentals.

I don’t say any of that to be negative, Just a couple of observations. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming. Roll Tide!!

Great post! I defintely think alot of these very athletic players we recruit aren't good at fundamentals because the could get away with bad fundementals in HS because of their athleticism.

One other thing I've noticed is how bad some of them are in running a fast break. Since we aren't good in the half court we could really add some offensivie potential if we could run the break, but it usually a turnover in the making.

Bama basketball is similar to football last year before Tua: need shooters not just to score outside but to open up the inside for driving and passing. It's tough playing an intelligent team when you cannot consistently hit jump shots - they will simply pack it in and not even CS can drive on that.

IMO, the difference in FT % is usually overrated - today at this point, it's not.
