Game Thread: OFFICIAL POSTGAME THREAD - Bama vs. Hogs...

I am going to have to stop putting stats out because I can't seem to get them right. PPG means points per game but in this case it should be total points allowed this season. Sorry I screwed it up. I'll go back and edit it.

I am there with you Earl. Blown assignments, poor reads, and, to me, it wasn’t like we were “flying to the ball” like we normally see with our defense. Understandably some of that can be due to inexperience and “thinking instead of reacting”. And I know this offense is explosive and even on an off day should score 35-40. But it always happens every year where a team plays us like they are the ‘86 Bears and we roll out our B- game. And that is where this defense concerns me.
Yep. Why is the middle of the field unmanned so much of the time? Happened in the Louisville game. Also the A&M game. I know it is Lupoi's 1st year too but...why is that still happening? Different reasons I know, but still happening nonetheless. Man I hope that gets solved.

If I’m wrong, I’ll apologize. But unless there was widespread switching of jerseys on the sideline, we had starters on the field for at least the first half of the fourth quarter.

It was the 2s. So there was a mix but yes it was 2nd string heavy. However, we had pretty bug issues before that.

It seems like communication and assignments are the biggest issues.

We beat them 49-30 in 2016. It’s a tough place to play and Morris is getting his system working.

And anyone that beats us will have to put at least 50 up and hope we turn the ball over 3 times.

Arky came in with a great game plan. Don't take that away from them. They used motions and such to clear out the middle of the field and it worked. Add to that we have a young defense and are still learning as well as some assistants learning. Maybe we aren't used to teams scoring as much on us but we dang sure aren't used to our team scoring early and often either. Had we left Tua in all game the point differential would have been much larger than it was.
I really have never seen so much dadgum complaining about a team that is 6-0 and in the driver's seat for the SEC west. We beat LSU in a couple of weeks and we're going to the SEC championship game regardless of whether we have 1 SEC loss or not (and I really don't see a team that can get in a shootout with us) and we want to try to pick this team apart.
I understand that are deficiencies in our young defense but, dare I say it again, we are 6-0 and in the catbird seat for the SEC west.

I love this team, and our coaches. But to gloss over what is an obvious deficiency is foolhardy imo if the ultimate goal is to win a NC. Sorry, but I’m not buying the Arkansas is better than their record hype. They may indeed get better as the season goes on, but they were absolutely dismal 5 games in and they flat out moved the ball at will against us. Our linebackers are constantly out of position and like I said earlier look lost half the time. Our db play has been a mixed bag. I only remember these kind of breakdowns on D happening in recent years against Ohio St in 2014 and Clemson twice with Deshaun Watson. Those were NC teams. I don’t know if it’s coaching or player execution, but we need to get better on D if we are going to win a championship. Oklahoma is proof positive that you cannot win a NC solely with a high-flying O.

Bama has a lot better defense than OU last year.

Here are some numbers. Numbers are just numbers, not biased. So, you can take them make what you will out of them.

SEC points allowed (all games)

1. Miss St ……….76
2. Georgia ……..78
3. Kentucky …..83
4. Auburn ……...86
5. Florida ……...89
6. Alabama …...96

Mid-pack is not the standard we are used to and it seems to be getting worse instead of better. This is going to take some getting used to but I will get used to it and not going to let it ruin my day with Mizzou like it did Saturday.
It’s not great. Maybe worst since 2007. This is why I’m not worried:

Offensive PPG:
1. Alabama 56
2. Georgia 42.8
3. Ole Miss 42.3
4. Missouri 39
5. Florida 34

We are pacing the field by nearly 2 TDS per game.

They weren’t yesterday, and besides that, you really cannot draw that conclusion yet anyway. There’s still too much football to be played.

Exactly. No conclusions except that Saban is your head coach. Worrying won't help, so just relax and trust the master. Worst case still has you the favorite to win it all anyway.

Yes but we have yet to face the meat of our schedule, which is extremely backloaded. Not sure those numbers will hold up in November.

Did you watch OU last year? They may have had one of the worst defenses to compete in a championship in the last 30 years.

C'mon man - OU allowed 31+ points in six games last season and allowed an average of 27 points per game.

I admit OU was pretty sorry on that side of the ball, but we did not do much better yesterday—against one of our weakest opponents.

I guess for me it all boils down to this—all my life as an Alabama fan it’s been an accepted maxim that great/very good defense ultimately is necessary to win championships. It’s one that has worked out well for us. Why would we as fans abandon that now?

Nah, I’m not buying it. LSU will be tough but not tough enough and MSU and AU suck and have to play us at Bryant-Denny. LSU might hold us under 50 but no one else is.

I hope you’re right. I have Alabama favored to win every game in the regular season, where I see trouble is in the seccg and against Ohio State.
