I said at the begging of the season that Coach Johnson had a zero chance of losing his job this year. It turns out when you lose your team and choke every time the game is on the line that is not true. I wish Coach Johnson well and hope he has much success in the future. He was a good man and great ambassador for UA.

UA needs a guy who can literally change the culture of basketball at Alabama. I trust Greg Byrne to make the right hire. He knows basketball and will find the right guy. I'd like to have a game changer. Whoever it is, we need him to visit Watford day 1. I hope they find a job for Coach Pettway. No one loves UA more than he does.

Agreed. This is a big hire for Byrne at UA and I think he is just the man for the job.

Here's a wild card... Cecil Hurt is saying on Finebaum that it could be until April 15th for a resolution. So I present to you Sean Miller.... He could be fired by then. Byrne knows him... It's definitely controversial, and I would be shocked if we went after him, but I would like it. Heck, I would love it

Yeah, and my Zona buddies would never talk to me again! (They have been very quiet, the last few months. I am starting to worry about them.)

Would need plenty of clearance as far as the FBI investigation goes.

If Miller came to Bama and Pearl remained at the Barn, the NCAA would have open a branch office in Birmingham just to save on travel expenses from Indianapolis.

What in Byrne’s background makes him a basketball expert? Serious question, I have seen several people say he is a big basketball guy.

Coaching trees are over-rated IMHO. Just hire the best coach available regardless of who he worked under in the past.

In basketball, I think that is an unreasonable expectation at Alabama. We are a solid, midrange program with great tradition but cannot expect to attract a top shelf coach IMO. Until we bulldoze Coleman, at least, I’ll continue to feel that way.

I tend to agree. We are not Kentucky Basketball. Can we have a really good program that sometimes makes a decent run in the tournament? Yes.

The two points don’t really go together.

One can argue the program’s place in the national landscape and still acknowledge a coaching tree doesn’t matter one bit.

doesnt he make 3 million at Texas Tech

He makes $3.2MM AND has a $12MM+ buyout. No way BAMA would even consider that cost. Even if they negotiate a $4MM buyout with Avery paid over 4 years and could work with Tech to pay his buyout over 4 years, you are talking $4MM a year in buyouts. Add in the fact it will likely take a 6yr $25MM to get him, that is over $8MM a year for the next 4 years.

No problem with that, as far as I’m concerned. But tell that to the fans that want a big name coach, not me. Otherwise we continue to be a black hole for up and coming coaches....

Wimp proved we can have a solid—albeit not great—program. It
CAN be done.

If I controlled the purse strings, I’d go after Mark Turgeon at Maryland. Offer him a Sabanesque deal worth @ $32Mil/8yrs guaranteed with no buy out with the promise of a new bball facility within 3 yrs. He has Kansas roots under Larry Brown and has exp at Jax State on his resume. He knows the state and has exp in big time college basketball.
