Who will start at QB next year?

If Mac Jones has upward development in the offseason from how he performed in the Iron Bowl. I highly doubt anyone beats him out. Considering his zero experience in big game environments, what he did in the Iron Bowl is very, very promising. More impressive than the numbers and the physical performance, was his demeanor. He appeared to take in the hostile environment and magnitude of the situation with ease. As Gary said in the second half, the more he plays the better he's getting. Let's not underscore what he did Saturday. Name me another team in the top five of the playoff rankings whose backup quarterback could have done what Jones did in the Iron Bowl? My guess is, none. He's going to be very, very hard to unseat.

That's my assessment right now (and in my earlier post). I agree and if pressed I'd say he has the potential to have a Joe Burrow type outbreak if he's identified as the starter in spring and continuing into the fall.

Only reason Young's name gets tossed out there is because he is believed to be the type of talent that is not the norm for most, even very good, freshmen QB recruits.

As some would say, "If I'm a betting man," I'd put my money on MJ to trot out against USC next year at Jerry World, but I also wouldn't be surprised in Mr. Young might not get some "meaningful snaps."

I kinda have a reverse gambler's fallacy with the HS commit. The likelihood that we hit big time on an immediate impact QB three times in half a decade is astronomical. Mac Jones has done well enough to have a significant leg up on anyone on campus much less athletes who are not even here yet.

Then you have Tyson and Taulia........ it’s good to have enough QBs out there

And, normally, I'd agree with the statistical odds. FWIW, I think Young looks special, but I'm not basing it just on my opinion. That's all I guess I can say about that.

The reality is that teams like Alabama rarely have to rely on TF starters. You won't next year as you have Mac Jones who not only has meaningful experience as a starter, but also played at a high level in those games.

Honestly, I don't ever remember a guy like Mac getting replaced right out of the gates. Lesser QB? Sure. But Mac has played at a high level as a starter.

one of the most impressive things i saw him do was to follow up both of the pick 6s with td drives where he was throwing. that takes a lot of fortitude, especially in a hostile environment

I noticed that the receiver's have to stop to catch the ball or jump up to make a reception. Tua would throw where they caught the ball in stride and made yards on the run after the reception. You think maybe a timing thing?

Some of it might be a timing thing. But mostly, it's a Tua thing.

Tua Tagovailoa is a generational talent. We've never had anybody anywhere near that accurate. On passes 40+ yards in the air, the ball consistently arrived at the receivers almost as if it were placed into their hands.

Mac can't do that. At least, certainly not as consistently as Tua. There's no shame in that. Nobody we've ever had could. Not Namath, not Stabler, not McCarron.....nobody. I'm not sure there's been a more accurate passer in the history of college football.

Tua spoiled us rotten on that front. The fact that the next QB isn't as good as Tua doesn't mean he isn't good. Just means you don't get two GOATs in a row.

Should be a great battle

Mac- an un-athletic drop back guy, who looks about 6'1" 200ish pounds, good but not great arm, doesn't seem to be anything elite about him.
But, he's smart, has showed some toughness and has at least some experience, i think he probably starts the opening game.
Don't get the impression he'll be an NFL type guy, but that doesn't mean he can't be a very good college QB.

Lia- smaller than Tua, doesn't have Tua's all world arm, but who does?
Seems to have some mobility and off the script skills, wonder if he has some Tagovailoa magic in his bones.
Wouldn't surprise me if he works hard and is in the mix to start, but also wouldn't surprise me if he gets passed up by others.

Young- undersized, but a great athlete with an arm, maybe it will take some time and he'll make noise in the 2021 season more than right away.
Id love to have a dual threat guy to give defenses fits and make exciting plays.
We don't need to rush him on the field though, he might need to time to adjust out of high school.
Guess we'll see wheres he's at in the spring.

Tua is a different breed, I get that, but Saban was unafraid to pull the vet starter (Hurts) in the National Title game and put in a freshman. Saban will play whoever gives the team the best chance to win, regardless of experience.

A Day game will be A LOT of fun.

I figured it out.

2020
Mac starts the first 11 games
Tua starts the final 4 games, preserves redshirt

2021
Tua starts 15 games

You're welcome.

I actually think this is selling Mac a little short (no pun intended). I think he's listed at 6'2" 205 but having watched him play both in person and on TV, I think he plays bigger than that. He stands tall in the pocket and is absolutely not afraid to take a shot (for better or worse).

And while he's no Jalen Hurts, I think he's at least as athletic as McCarron was, if not more. Certainly athletic enough to move in the pocket and get a few yards when a play breaks down (which he demonstrated against the barn).

You mentioned a key word there, "ELITE". It's really hard to win a NC these days without an elite QB. Occasionally a team can still get by with a game manager QB if they have an elite defense. The Top 3 teams, who I feel have the only chance to win it all have Fields, Burrow, and Lawrence. That's no coincidence. These are all guys that will be drafted by the NFL. Does Mac Jones have an NFL future? Right now I'd say probably not, although I'd like nothing better than for him to prove me wrong. So unless our defense gets back to Bama standards I think Saban may have to eventually turn to someone like Young to generate more offense. If Young plays anything like the highlights I watch he could have NFL potential since he reminds me a bit of Kyler Murray.

Just curious if anyone on the board would have made a post like this about Joe Burrow at this time last year. I wouldn't have. At this time last year I thought he was the best thing we could hope for at LSU.
My point is that we saw a lot promise from Mac in the IB and I'm really hoping that he's still growing/learning.
