Scott Cochran is Leaving for Georgia

I'm seriously starting to dislike Kirby, not so much that CSC is leaving Alabama but it's that Diet Saban seems to be obsessed with being Nick Saban.
The beauty of this is that Bama's S&C will likely improve while Kirby gave up and on the field coaching position to a guy with as much coaching experience as I have.

Hoping I’m wrong but it just feels like Smart would tell Cochran to come on as a special teams coach only to find a replacement the next year and he fill the same role he did a Alabama.

It's actually a brilliant move...……………...for everyone else. Kinda wonder if there isn't some sleight of hand though......……..

I have mixed feelings about this. I am glad Cochran stayed all these years. He was a big part of the program, especially with the relationships he had with the players. I met him once, and he seems like a very nice guy.

I know Saban will get a good replacement, but it will take time to develop the relationships. The timing seems weird too. I read that Saban understands Cochran's desire to coach on the field, but Saban chose not to pursue that route at Alabama. I am sure Saban knew he would go to UGA since he almost went in 2015. Saban was just not willing to give him a chance on field (at least according to the article I read).

I am not concerned about the Strength and Conditioning part.. maybe the players won't get injured as much with someone else. My concern is the relationship aspect, the timing of it all, and what will Cochran share with Kirby about the players and what he knows about the Bama players, and everything else inside the program that Kirby may not know about. I just don't trust Kirby. And, we have to play UGA this year at least once, maybe twice if Bama wins the West.

I wish Cochran the best but hope UGA loses several games. I guess I wish if he was going to leave, that it would have been to TN or Ole Miss, the other 2 teams who have tried to hire him the past few years.

I hope you're right.

The thing that fascinates me is that, for safety reasons, S&C has pretty much unlimited time with the team. Whereas on-field coaches are extremely limited.

So you take a guy away from what he knows, put him in something he doesn't know, and limit his time with his players in the process?

Unless Smart has a legal workaround for that, I don't know how that'll work. Surely the NCAA would see through combining the positions of off-field S&C and on-filed Special Teams. But then I'm probably giving the NCAA too much credit there.

Also agree with other posters that Saban probably knew this was coming, and has a backup plan.

There's zero question that "smart" just gave a precious OTF coaching position to a guy with zero coaching experience.

The only question is whether Bama gets better or not - I suspect they will. I suspect the rash of injuries we've seen over the last few seasons since transitioning from big, lumbering guys to smaller, quicker guys has a lot to do with what's been happening in S&C.

Honestly, I don't trust Kirby either, but much of the program is already know to some extent by Kirby since he coached at Bama..................and I wouldn't be surprised if Saban changes a few things around

I suspect the injury bug might vacation somewhere else now

Yes, please let the injury bug avoid BAMA next year. I wonder why they did not allow Cochran to say goodbye to the team? There was a team meeting but he was not allowed to be there, according to what I read. I guess the players who want to talk to him and wish him luck can see him on their own or text him, but it seems like he would be able to say goodbye properly since he is the only one who has been with Saban since 2007 at Bama. Or, was there a bitter departure due to it being Kirby who hired him?

Can you imagine the Cochran method of screaming at the most delicate members of the team? Different than the kicking whisperer.

I would think that would be obvious, under the circumstances...

There are other strength coaches in the world. To tell you the truth, I've been wondering if our surge in injuries over the past few years has been due to S&C. Just wondering.

Probably lots of reasons...………….as Earle stated, under the circumstances it's understandable.
