News Article: Good luck dealing with a pandemic, depending on this administration...

It is literally impossible to have a working economy including our food supply without exhaustive testing and quarantining of those who have been exposed to the virus. We will ultimately see a complete breakdown in our society if these huge outbreaks are not contained in population centers and food supply issues develop. The epidemic is just getting underway in Africa and India and we will see echos from that in the US over the next several years. A competent leader would put testing, treatment and development of a vaccine above everything. Competency is obviously in very short supply in the White House.

Our food supply is not at risk. All of the cogs in that machine are still in place and working, with most farm workers at low risk of serious complications even if infected. They are young, not overweight and have one one real health condition - poverty. And, if we are being honest, our government doesn't value those people anyway, so they don't care if there are casualties among the farm workers. Truck drivers are still working, with surprisingly few infections among them. So the food supply has not been interrupted and won't be.

How do we get to a point where not only have infection rates dropped low enough, but we also have adequate testing in place so we can go back to work without putting ourselves right back here again in less than one month? Then, once back at work, how do we put in place a mechanism to trace new infections in a free moving society to avoid another huge outbreak?

America is not built to manage a disease like this. With our incompetent leadership and a population unwilling to consider necessary mechanisms to track and lock down potentially infected individuals within our population, we will be the cause of our own continued crisis.

We will know more on food supply and prices when fruit and vegetable harvest begin that depend on thousands of migrant workers. The shutting down of pork and poultry processing plants already due to the virus is not a good sign. Another aspect is the fact that people will have to pay for food who lack income. I will just wait and see on this one.

  • 26945 new cases and 2407 new deaths in the United States

    New York City
today has reported 3,778 additional deaths that have occurred since March 11 and have been classified as "probable," defined as follows: “decedent [...] had no known positive laboratory test for SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) but the death certificate lists as a cause of death “COVID-19” or an equivalent" [source]. We will add these to the New York State total as soon as it is determined whether the historical distribution can be obtained

That is nearly 4,000 that are not added to the total yet.
That deaths vs recovered stat is ominous. I think recovered means those that got out of the hospital alive.

What really bothers me is how will I ever get to go back to work. There is no controlling the aerosol water spray that must be used with a high speed dental handpiece. The aerosol cloud is like a sneeze times ten. I can see dentists and their staffs not only getting the disease but spreading it. Yet people are going to have to have dental care. We are hearing about the possibility of negative pressure rooms, a second high volume suction in addition to the one the assistant holds, and of course the usual PPE. I'm trying to learn as much as I possibly can, but no one really knows yet.

At some point, dentists are going to have to go back to work.
I had had some of these thoughts. You may remember that I have a back upper molar with a root problem, a void which has gotten infected once already. I canceled the first step of the implant even before the lockdown...

I had a molar pulled yesterday. the dentist is only open two days a week for emergencies only. They checked my temp before they let me in the door and I could barely recognize the dentist behind her face shield and mask.

If you still have the tooth an extraction is a pretty safe procedure unless the tooth has to be sectioned. Anesthetize, luxate, extract. No aerosol spray.

If you don't have the tooth you shouldn't have an infection. It sounds like you may have elected to do an immediate implant meaning the tooth will be removed and the implant placed at the same appointment OR a bone graft will be placed after the extraction and the implant placed months later. I don't place immediate implants unless it's a tooth in the esthetic zone. Failure of the implant to integrate is higher for immediate implants.

I had one implant fail last year and we placed quite a few. The failure was in a gentleman in his 80's who lost a long span bridge and the posterior abutment tooth. Implants were his only option. We placed three on the same day and checked for integration at four months. The middle implant had not integrated so we removed it and just made him a bridge to span the gap.

Ours is only doing emergencies and she didn't want to do this implant, so I went to a periodontist. As I've said, I canceled early on him for the first phase...

I recognize the risk in not having the extraction now. I'm being extra careful in keeping the area clean and using a WaterPik, which is working so far. It was the three phase and all he was going to do was extract, I think. TBF, the number of other mouths he'd been in was what bothered me...

The WaterPik is an amazing tool. I really stress with my patients the importance of using them. I use mine daily and so does my hygienist. I've seen periodontally involved teeth last for years with no issues that would have otherwise been extractions.

I am a state’s rights supporter and renounce Trump’s comments about absolute power of the presidency. I also find it abhorrent that he wanted his signature to be on the stimulus checks.

then you will love this...

Trump: We’re going to take the firearms first and then go to court, because that’s another system. Because a lot of times by the time you go to court … it takes so long to go to court to get the due process procedures. I like taking the guns early, like in this crazy man’s case that just took place in Florida; he had a lot of fires [and] they saw everything. To go to court would have taken a long time, so you could do exactly what you’re saying but take the guns first, go through due process second.

An aside - are you getting any guidance from professional organizations - ADA, etc.?

Not that I ever know what Trump is talking about, but what is he talking about? What is the context?
