Roster Management

What if Petty returned for 1 more season? Would that be the final piece of a roster that could legitimately contend for the sweet 16 or better? I personally believe that even without Petty we could contend for the elite 8 this upcoming season. It all depends on the draw in the NCAA tournament but with the right draw I believe the talent is in place to start a deep run in the tournament.

This statement isn't a reflection on Oats at all, but I want to see the team win the games they should win during the regular season before I prognosticate where the team should finish at the end of the season. Cecil tweeted it out after another February loss earlier this year, and it was something to the effect of how Alabama making it into the tournament regularly depends on Alabama figuring out how to win games in February. I believe Oats can work the team to learn that because unlike teams of recent vintage, they kept on playing (for the most part). Maybe this past season is a 2008 football season-type experience for the basketball team; we'll see.

If Petty does come back, one can argue we will have one of the top 3 rosters in the SEC next season. Definitely read the post link from chadley, it has some good quotes from Petty in it. I still think he goes, but after reading the article, I won't be surprised to see him on the roster next year.

You aren’t wrong. I do think it’s important to remember where we were in the middle of our February slump this year though. Herb was playing one handed, almost our entire bench was injured, then Petty getting injured took out about 20% of our points per game. Yet we were still in every game we played with a shot to win.

I have a different feeling about this squad Next year. If Petty and Herb come back, they would put us over the top as a top 3 team in the conference IMO. We had tournament level starters this year but no depth, and terrible luck. Next year we should have Elite 8 talent with Sweet 16 depth. With the right matchups and luck, I think this team can go deep.

With the 5 recent signees plus the addition of Rojas, Quinerly, and Gary to the existing roster has me more excited about the upcoming season than I've been in a long time. It remains to be seen how well they will gel togther but the potential is there for this to be a remarkable season for Bama basketball. Shackelford is a stud. Herb has improved offensively but he still needs to round out that part of his game but if he does then a NBA future awaits him. I thought Rojas would have been a starter this past season until the injury happened. Primo has been projected as a potential lottery pick next year. CNO has said that JQ was the best player in practice on several occasions last year. Bruner was huge get for us. Petty would be icing on the cake if he returns. This team appears to be loaded with NBA type talent.

Really hoped that he would stick around one more season...
Naaah ... methinks this was already set in stone from the beginning of last season. Thanks Kira for your efforts during your time here at Bama. Much success to you, looking forward to see what you will accomplish in the NBA.

I do believe that whoever those come back, they need to be prepared to put in Herb-like effort every game and leave it all on the floor. The plus for CNO is, he has the depth to where if a guy is not giving effort, he can replace him with someone who can.

After watching Terrell Lewis go in the 4th or 5th round this weekend might help.

I think we are going some players in the the transfer portal because they fit Cno's system. And when do ere s the roster have to be final?

gonna be exciting, especially since we will basically have a new team on the court. of course, it will take time to get a set lineup and rotation on the floor but we have options. I think at some point we'd like to see a starting 5 of JQ, Shackleford, Ellis, Herb and Bruner...top 2 off the bench of Primo and Reese.. Gary, Davis, Rojas, Miles, Smith and Ambrose will fight it out for spots behind those 2 IMO off the bench. I would expect hope to get at least 1 RS.. just my shelter in place thoughts

My guess is you'll see the following:

PG: Quinerly, Primo, Herb
SG: Shaq, Primo, Ellis
SF: Gary, Ellis, Ambrose
PF: Herb, Rojas, Ambrose
C: Bruner, Rojas, Davis

Rojas is either a starter or the first person off the bench when subbing at the 4-5 spots. Herb is more of a 3 than a 4. So I would have Herb at the 3 spot and Rojas at the 4 as my starters. If Petty comes back then my prediction is that either Smith or Reese will transfer.

I agree about Herb being more of a 3. I really only put him at 4 since there were so many shooters to get on the floor at 3. It'll be really interesting to see how all of this plays out.

Mine is more:

PG: Quinerly, Herb, Primo
SG: Shack, Primo, Ellis
SF: Herb, Ellis, Gary
PF: Rojas, Bruner/Ambrose, Smith
C: Bruner, Davis/Reese, Ambrose

slash means depending on rotation.

edit: I stand corrected on Kira. Thought he may be back after tryouts and all. But very happy for him and wish him success.
