Roster Management

Mine is more:

PG: Quinerly, Herb, Primo
SG: Shack, Primo, Ellis
SF: Herb, Ellis, Gary
PF: Rojas, Bruner/Ambrose, Smith
C: Bruner, Davis/Reese, Ambrose

slash means depending on rotation.

edit: I stand corrected on Kira. Thought he may be back after tryouts and all. But very happy for him and wish him success.

Mines closer to yours:

PG: Quinerly, Ellis, Herb
SG: Shack, Primo, Ellis
SF: Herb/Gary, Miles
PF: Rojas, Smith/Ambrose
C: Bruner, Davis/Reese, Smith/Ambrose

I'm thinking a consistent 10-deep rotation with a lot of guys getting a minimum 10+ minutes a game. Pretty much a starting 5 to get the lead and a complimentary 5 to keep the lead. A rotation system like this will bode well to make us a solid tourney team.

Rojas is either a starter or the first person off the bench when subbing at the 4-5 spots. Herb is more of a 3 than a 4. So I would have Herb at the 3 spot and Rojas at the 4 as my starters. If Petty comes back then my prediction is that either Smith or Reese will transfer.

yes normally he is a 3 however i think with what CNO wants on the floor he will be our 4. Because if you use Herb at the 3, and Rojas at 4 you are missing some offensive firepower and ballhandling by keeping somebody really good on the bench. it sort of goes against what he wants to do. JMO of course

I don’t see Primo coming off the bench. He’s too talented. He’s a one and done guy. He has been mocked as high as 16 in 2021 drafts. I think he starts from Day 1.

I think the starting lineup will be:

1. JQ
2. Shack
3. Primo
4. Herb
5. Bruner

I agree about Herb being more of a 3. I really only put him at 4 since there were so many shooters to get on the floor at 3. It'll be really interesting to see how all of this plays out.
I agree. If he could shoot, he would be a solid three, but unless his shooting improves a lot, I would make him a Rodman type four and tell him to go rebound and defend and only shoot when he has a dunk/layup.

You win. That's a good starting lineup on paper.

I think we are going some players in the the transfer portal because they fit Cno's system. And when do ere s the roster have to be final?

Well, I think the final roster has to be decided by the time the fall semester starts in August. That is assuming that Alabama, and the rest of the NCAA, are starting school in some form or fashion, in August. I have no idea one way or the other on the chances of that happening.

If Herb could just develop that little 12-15 footer he'd be a great offensive asset. I know CNO's goal is to shoot 3s and layups, but I really think a 15 footer is Herb's ceiling right now.

There's a little hope he could improve his shooting from that distance because his free throw shooting improved last year. The year before he was throwing up bricks from the line and last year he became a better shooter from the FTL. This year can he improve on shooting from the floor???

As scrappy and long as he is around the basket if he could develop just a "little" offensive game he'd be worth 10 points a game and with the rest of the lineup that would be "gravy."

Herb was starting to figure things out on the offensive end before the broken wrist. He was getting to the rim, and actually finishing, or finding the open guy for the 3. He was just beginning to develop his offensive game and understanding his role. I rewatched the UNC game, and Herb was getting to the rim at will, he just couldn’t finish. Once he figured how to be under control when attacking, he became dangerous at getting to the rim and making the defense collapse.

The thing about our base offense (Dribble Drive Motion) is that it relies on attacking the rim and finishing or kicking out for the three.
Herb is mismatch because of his height, length and ability to get to the rim off of the dribble. When he is at the 4 you have guys that aren’t used to having to guard the perimeter and defend the dribble drive, guarding him. It also turns him into another PG type player. Go back and watch the Auburn game when he was healthy, and see what I’m talking about.

With us adding Bruner (we did this with Reese too [bruner is way better lol] we can invert the 4 & the 5 spot and put Herb in the Dunkers spot (short corner) and Bruner up top, to either pick and pop, or even beat a 5 man off the dribble. You can also play 5 out and let Herb be the attacker and kick out when the Def collapses. You can also let him be the ball screen guy at times. When you do that the defense can’t just sag off of Herb because then the guy with the ball gets an open look. Anyway, there is so much you can do with Herb. He’s 6’8, but to be, he’s so long that he plays more like 6’11.

I expect Herb to have a huge year if healthy.

Thanks for your insights. This is good stuff that the casual fan, like me, doesn't notice. When you explain it like that, it makes perfect sense.

Ditto.

Herb is my favorite BB Player. Although I'm primarily a FB Fan I'm finding myself more and more interested in what CNO is doing with this program. I'm very happy Byrne went after this guy. I'll be buying tickets for the RCC again this December (pending of course)

Thanks. I’m always up for talking X’s & O’s. What I’m really excited about is that we led the SEC in scoring and 1) Weren't at full strength 2) Didn’t have his guys in designed for this system 3)Wasn’t even running his full system.

He wants guys that can pass, dribble, and shoot, not just guys that specialize at one thing. He also wants length at each position. It’s my easier to finish at the rim off the bounce when you are 6’6 or 6’7 rather than 6’2. Also, not a knock on Shack and Petty, but they really aren’t drivers. We need guys that can drive, shoot, and pass. Its ok to have one guy on the floor that can’t attack the rim at a high level, but not 3 at one time. Think about the lineups that we were having to throw out there some this season.

Let’s look at the roster and lineup combo’s we had.

-Kira (Can drive, pass, and shoot, at a high level. Plays average D)
-Petty (Shoots at a very high level, Average to Below average handles for a D1 {esp a 5 star player}, good passer, good defender when he wanted to be)
-Shack (Very High Level spot up shooter, good passer, above average handles and ability to get to the rim, {needs a little work at finishing and a little quicker first step}, pretty good defender but gets lost sometimes but is very coachable)
-Herb (Very below average shooter, very good passer when he stays under control, good ball handler and gets to the rim extremely well for his size, {again when he stays under control}, AMAZING defender, one of the best that I have ever seen. He locked down Trae Young his freshman year. I’m a huge Atlanta Hawks fan, and teams in the NBA can’t stop Trae)
-Reese (Good shooter for his size and position. Can be a very good shooter with focus and better shot selection. Average to above average passer {had some flashes of brilliance ex: the lob to Petty} Defense was almost non-existant.
-Beetle (Excellent shooter, when he took good shots, above average passer, good ball handler but lacked size to consistently finish in traffic, and got out of control too often. Good defender, what people like to call an irritant (get under the opponents skin) but lacked size to be a great defender, was also prone to getting in foul trouble. Was also never fully healthy. Like ever healthy!
- Galin (Awful shooter, can’t dribble, not really a good passer, too slow to play good D. Overall not a good system fit. He does give incredible effort and I commend him for that.
-Javian (Good touch around the rim and can shoot a midrange, above average passer out of the post, not a ball handler, Good defender, but he is really an old school PF and not really a center. He isn’t a rim protector on D at all. He is a good defender when he is guarding a guy that’s his same style. Not a great system fit, but works his tail off, and has made it work. as a bench contributor)
- Forbes (Was supposed to be a lights out shooter than just never materialized as one. Average to below average D1 Ball Handler. Lacked the burst to beat people of the dribble. Above average passer when spotted up, pretty decent defender, and again played hard. Just didn’t materialize to what he was rated. That happens sometimes Will do well at Tulane.

That was our main playing rotation this year. People that say this team was overly talented are just incorrect. When you look at our playing rotation and really break it down, I think it’s pretty amazing that we average 82 points a game. That is working magic to me. I know there are games that we should have won. Penn, Penn St, Florida, just to name a few. But break every player down individually, and this roster wasn’t as talented, as a whole, as most made it out to be.

I’m looking forward to the future.

The possibilities that we have with this roster are unbelievable. We are 2 or 3 deep at every spot and there isn't much of a dropoff in the 2nd and 3rd guys from the 1st guy. I think there will be one or two guys that could start for a lot of other teams that will be in a backup role. When you have JQ, Shack, Primo, Herb, Rojas, and Bruner, you have 6 guys for 5 starting spots. If Petty comes back that is 7 guys that are all legitimate starters. Unless he just blows up I would think Primo will probably come off the bench given the experience in front of him especially early in the season. If Petty does come back then I'll move Rojas to a backup spot.

Here is my starting lineup if Petty returns:
1 - JQ, Primo, Herb
2 - Shack, Ellis, Primo, Petty
3 - Petty, Gary, Ambrose, Herb
4 - Herb, Rojas, Reese, Miles, Gary, Bruner
5 - Bruner, Davis, Smith

And if Petty does not return:
1 - JQ, Primo, Herb
2 - Shack, Ellis, Primo, Petty
3 - Herb, Gary, Ambrose
4 - Rojas, Reese, Miles, Gary, Bruner
5 - Bruner, Davis, Smith

I think you go with experience over talent unless the talent is just that much better so I have Primo coming off the bench. Herb is more of a 3 than a 4 but if Petty comes back I don't think you can put one of them on the bench, nor do you put Shack on the bench and put Petty in the 2 spot. I left Reese and Smith but obviously if Petty returns someone will have to leave and one of those two guys is the most likely to leave. There are more guys on this roster that have legitimate NBA aspirations than any roster I can ever remember at Bama and I was in college at UA from 1988-1992 when we were top 5 in the country with former players in the NBA.

Preseason hype begins, highest ranked SEC team at 18

interesting ... I just wish he would give some insight for each pick. Surprisingly Memphis didn't even make it in his top 50. Would think those guys would be better in year 2. To be fair ... Goodman had us ranked as high as 11 last year round this time. Now he only has us ranked 18th lol

Excellent breakdown. In a sense, we made lemonade with a lot of lemons last year. That formula will change starting next year (with these new recruits) and will just get stronger with more wins and recruiting cycles.

That's what's so exciting about the future. When CNO gets his ponies in the stable watch out!
