"Not anymore than you post.

Queasy, did I not call it?"

I don't think number of posts on tidefans is a direct indication of football knowledge. You seem like one of the more knowlegeable posters, you should know that. I'm not a doom & gloom guy...i think shula is ultimately the answer, but i question some personel decisions (why not play Tatum when Capps was struggling?, Darby seemed to be still suffering from a hip problem & we have a loaded backfield--play some of 'em). I also question alot of the play calling--seems we can move the football but we need a shakeup in the redzone. I could go by play by play and i will when i watch the replay if someone wants, but i think you'd probly be too busy pumping sunshine to listen.

Execution= receivers catching the ball (they've been doing that), Offensive Line= vast improvement, JPW= playing as good or better than BC ever did, Tight Ends even catching the ball....the turnover ratio will fluctuate (we got 2 gimmies against Hawai'i at the goal line) Where's the execution breakdown TerryP?

First Downs
Bama - 22
Vandy - 12

Total Net Yards
Bama - 325
Vandy - 234

Total Plays
Bama - 69
Vandy - 47

Fumbles Lost
Bama - 2
Vandy - 1

Interceptions Lost
Bama - 1
Vandy - 3

Play calling was fine. Execution and ball handling by RB's needs work. I didn't see TOP, but we had a huge time advantage there, too.

We lost fumbles at the 13 yard line, and the 2 yard line. Those two should have been TD's (or a TD and a FG), and the final should have been 27-10 or 23-10... IMO, of course.

So its the consesus that turnovers were the problem today?

If not for turnovers and the fake field goal this game could have been over earlier. Like I keep saying we are so close to where we need to be but we just arent there yet next week we have to execute because after that we have the real test.

I give Vandy credit for being as efficient as possible, but the two TO's in the red zone did help them out.

At this moment, I'd say Vandy whips up on MSU, Ole Miss, and UK. MSU has played two games, and hasn't scored a single point as of yet.

Not saying we don't have issues to work out, but similar to the UH game, I think we are definitely better than the final score shows.

Changing gears a bit...on the clock changes...last week there wasn't a difference in the amount of play for Bama or UH versus last year.

This game, we got about 10 more than last years average...Vandy about 10 less than average...still, right on par with last years numbers.

Who failed to "execute"? What unit/players let us down today...

Two fumbles inside the red zone. One was Jimmy Johns heading towards the 1-yd line; the other I'm brain-farting out on. Our running game coughed them up. The rest of the offense I think did a heck of a job doing their part. (might have been Castille)

I'm not going to criticize these kids, I love em all. They just gotta hold onto the ball.

As much as overturned plays ended up being the problem in the Hawaii game. Problems will happen, Vandy had problems to and they still almost beat Alabama, the thing is what happens to Alabama when they end up playing quality opponents?

2 fumbles don't lead to a 13-10 eaker versus Vandy. Running the ball time and time again into a wall of defenders does. we were having success throwing it, and even though Vandy never adjusted and gave us room, we'd start running the ball up the middle again. Its great to throw to set up the run, but if the D don't adjust, you're not gonna be successful running--keep tossin it around!

I don't think playcalling is the root cause of our problems on offense. does that mean shula doesn't EVER make any boneheaded calls?--no, he has made some. but for the most part i think our mix of run/pass is pretty good. on the other hand, i don' think it is lack of effort on the players' part. I just think, honestly, we've got a lot of young, raw talent that hasn't had time to develop yet. two or three experienced veterans can't carry the day all by themselves, and we will find that out real quick once we start into the meat of our schedule.

Will speak to this before I watch the replay... therefore, could be wrong just from first glance. CMS called a much better game this week than last... you might can make a case that he called a terrific game in many ways, despite a failed FG fake (distance for first down was too much IMO). Outside of that, I think the only thing he didn't do well was possibly put a bit too much on JPW's shoulders in the first half. I think, based on last week's success, CMS put too much on him early... and JPW struggled. When he got back to simply getting him going with short, simple stuff, JPW's confidence returned and he got back to where he was last week.

Right now, I suspect four things that are causing problems in our execution:
* Very little upperclassmen leadership... just not a lot of seniors to lead and
some don't seem to want the role... not knocking any of them that are.
* Young talent... it's there, but it's got to get under control and learn through
experience and success. Good example: JJ fumbling inside the 5 today.
* Team identity... right now, with so many changes (personnel on defense,
OL technique, QB change) we are struggling with understanding WHO we
are and WHAT we do best. The past 2 years, we were a defensive team
who were going to stay in most games because of grit/determination. It
has not yet been determined this year... sometimes toughest thing to get
"ironed out" on the whole team.
* Defensive pass rush... the major X's and O's problem right now IMO. For a
couple of games, we've had problems CONSISTENTLY getting a pass rush.
Average time a QB has after the ball hits their hands to get rid of it? Try
about 4-6 seconds (sometimes even longer). Watch replays... when their
QB has 5 or more seconds, they are successful... often with big gains. An
excellent job will be done this year against the rush... but our success as a
defense is going to be determined by improvement in this area IMO. BTW,
it is due to some extent to our tendency to use the 3-3-5 a good bit... our
young DB's are not yet that experienced and great innovation has got to be
used in order to get pressure on the QB with that alignment.

I'll make a couple of points.
First, 2 Bama turnovers took 14 off the boards for Bama and put 10 on for Vandy. Both of Vandy's scores came off our turnovers. That is a 24 point swing.
Second. Redzone offense. The play calling has bben there but mistakes have kept us from getting it into the endzone. against Hawaii we had a dropped pass and two passes that would have been tds but instead just a little off timing. Something that can be expected with a new QB. But what else could be the problem? It may be a mental thing. It has been a problem and sometimes it gets into the minds of the players. Maybe they a pushing to hard or maybe they are being to cautious. I don't know which it is but I do feel that it more of a mental problem than anything.
