Alabama expected to hire Kevin Steele as defensive coordinator
A familiar face is returning to Tuscaloosa as Alabama’s defensive coordinator.247sports.com

Not sure if already mentioned, but if DC comes open, what about Kevin Steele? I know he’s having a hard go of it in Miami, but he’s been very successful in the SEC and obviously a former assistant under Saban here. Runs a physical defense.
Does anyone know what terms he and Saban are on?
I saw somewhere that Steele likes one year in the Alabama Teachers State Retirement System. This reeks of an NFL style “Jack Del Rio” hire, where the guy just continues to get hired even though the results don’t warrant it. I can’t believe we had to settle for him when other DCs were seemingly available.
I don't know that we have evidence for either of those conclusions. I strongly doubt either are true.it's like we were caught off guard that we might need to replace coordinators, or just not ready to bust out the checkbook to get the best available
That's an interesting wrinkle I hadn't thought of. It takes 10 years to vest and retire at age 60. Here's his time at Alabama state schools according to Wikipedia:I saw somewhere that Steele likes one year in the Alabama Teachers State Retirement System.
I don't believe the latter. There has to be a huge pool of up and comers that would be willing to use this job as a stepping stone. So really hoping for the former. One of two things:
He truly is hiring a one year stop gap that relates to Pruitt coming back
or
Saban's reputation of not allowing DC's to "do their own thing" has run out of tread and the pool of DC's that would accept that has drastically shrunk
You would think, but we do know from those who have worked with Saban and moved on, that he is/can be very difficult to work for, and when it comes to the defensive side of the ball, it is his defense and you're there to run it. It is similar on the offensive side of the ball, but there seems to be more flexibility on that side of the ball for others to put their personal touch on it.I don't believe the latter. The more I read up on Rees the more excited I am about that hire.
Coach, did you not read that he lost his starter last year and the offense actually got better with the back up? That seems to answer one of your questions.Rees seems like a great fit in terms of philosophy - run the ball, use the TE, don't expect your QB to be a hero.
My concern would be what does he call on 3rd and 2? 3rd and 6? Can he adjust when the line's struggling? Can he make adjustments if the QB is a backup? Is he predictable?
Rees could end up being a great hire.
One of the very few things that can be drawn from this is that Steele is definitely a one-year stop gap paving the way for Pruitt in 2024. I'm sure there
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the QB's he will have at Alabama to work with are a lot more talented at passing the ball (specifically Ty Simpson and possibly Holstein) than what he had at ND, so I would assume that Rees would have zero issue passing the ball on 3rd and 6. But if we run the ball like we should, 3rd and 2 is like a 3rd and 1. Run the dang ball!!!!Rees seems like a great fit in terms of philosophy - run the ball, use the TE, don't expect your QB to be a hero.
