it's like we were caught off guard that we might need to replace coordinators, or just not ready to bust out the checkbook to get the best available

The thing about Steele at the Barn is he was running “ his “ defense. He may be experienced at running Saban’s defense, but it wasn’t a good experience. I don’t see Saban letting Steele do his own thing so …. worries me.

My gut feeling at hearing the news that Steele will be the DC is: two more years of underachieving and close-but-not-quite-good-enough, then Saban retires. After that...who knows what will happen.

I'm not excited about Steele as DC. But I don't like Pruitt, either. I also thought Mac Jones was a perennial backup who would lose the starting job by mid-season. So there's that...

I like the Rees hire more than the Steele hire, I’ll say that, there has to be more to the Steele hire that we don’t know.

I would like to pat myself on the back here… I’m all seriousness, I think he’s an upgrade to game planning and overall physicality for our defense.

Not sure if already mentioned, but if DC comes open, what about Kevin Steele? I know he’s having a hard go of it in Miami, but he’s been very successful in the SEC and obviously a former assistant under Saban here. Runs a physical defense.
Does anyone know what terms he and Saban are on?

Gadsden, Al.
This reeks of an NFL style “Jack Del Rio” hire, where the guy just continues to get hired even though the results don’t warrant it. I can’t believe we had to settle for him when other DCs were seemingly available.
I saw somewhere that Steele likes one year in the Alabama Teachers State Retirement System.
I guess we will see.

That's an interesting wrinkle I hadn't thought of. It takes 10 years to vest and retire at age 60. Here's his time at Alabama state schools according to Wikipedia:

2007 Alabama (DC)
2008 Alabama (DHC/ILB)
2013 Alabama (director player personnel)
2014 Alabama (LB)
2016–2020 Auburn (DC)
2020 Auburn (interim HC/DC)
_____________
= 9 years

2023–present Alabama (DC)
_____________
=10 years at season's end

It checks out!

Don't forget most coordinators want to run their own systems. That leaves us a smaller pool
to choose from. Saban knew with the combination of Golding and O'Brien we were going nowhere.
Watching us play football the last two years at times has been nauseating. I say lets roll the dice,
see what we got and RTR!

One of two things:

He truly is hiring a one year stop gap that relates to Pruitt coming back

or

Saban's reputation of not allowing DC's to "do their own thing" has run out of tread and the pool of DC's that would accept that has drastically shrunk
I don't believe the latter. There has to be a huge pool of up and comers that would be willing to use this job as a stepping stone. So really hoping for the former.

The more I read up on Rees the more excited I am about that hire.

You would think, but we do know from those who have worked with Saban and moved on, that he is/can be very difficult to work for, and when it comes to the defensive side of the ball, it is his defense and you're there to run it. It is similar on the offensive side of the ball, but there seems to be more flexibility on that side of the ball for others to put their personal touch on it.

Rees seems like a great fit in terms of philosophy - run the ball, use the TE, don't expect your QB to be a hero.

My concern would be what does he call on 3rd and 2? 3rd and 6? Can he adjust when the line's struggling? Can he make adjustments if the QB is a backup? Is he predictable?

Rees could end up being a great hire.

Coach, did you not read that he lost his starter last year and the offense actually got better with the back up? That seems to answer one of your questions.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the QB's he will have at Alabama to work with are a lot more talented at passing the ball (specifically Ty Simpson and possibly Holstein) than what he had at ND, so I would assume that Rees would have zero issue passing the ball on 3rd and 6. But if we run the ball like we should, 3rd and 2 is like a 3rd and 1. Run the dang ball!!!!
