FINALLY - someone in "national media" gets it (mostly) right about Brandon Miller (SI had it too and deleted it)...

God forbid that a journalist do his or her job by lowering the temperature. You know, Johnnie Cochran went "police planted the glove" - and the media went with that. "Cochran claims cops who never met until the night of the murder conspired on the spot to frame Simpson" would have been doing their actual jobs since that's exactly what he was alleging.

I concur up to a point.

OTOH - maybe Saban is laying down the "don't come to me when you find trouble with, 'Coach, I was just at de wrong place at de wrong time'" for his own players, too.

But yes, taken truly literally, Saban's response does sound tone deaf.
Good thoughts.

One final point: Sworn testimony, particularly from a cop, not only carries more legal weight, it carries legal protection for journalists who use the information in their stories -- even if it's proven wrong. That helps explain why the same language keeps popping up.

That may be part of the reason we keep reading that Miller “delivered” the gun to Miles — that’s the word the policeman used in his testimony.

Very technically, I guess it’s correct. But the way most people interpret the word, it creates a falsely negative impression.

Journalists know that, but are presented with an opportunity to be technically accurate, yet spin the facts to fit their pre-conceived anti -Alabama narrative.

Compounding that, a clearly unprepared Oats was blindsided and fumbled his response to gotcha questions badly.

Then just as the furor was dying down and the full truth was starting to emerge, Saban threw gasoline on a fire that was almost out.

PR failure on Oats not being prepared. PR failure on Saban’s statement not being vetted.

You can set your watch to it.....won't click on it. Saban undoubtedly meant to address the Mitchell situation with his players and not the Miller situation, but the word choice is low-hanging fruit for lazy columnists. The AD/SID department's initial ineptitude with Oats set this up, because I'm pretty sure they don't get to tell Saban what to say/not say.

To be fair, Selma, it caused a 'ruckus' on this board, and we're Alabama fans.
But a "ruckus" appeared on this board not because of the quote itself but because Alabama posters knew what corrupt elements of the media would do with it, with the lemmings tagging along and the cowardly remaining quiet.

Truth be told, CNS gave them no choice.

So, it may have backfired but Saban may have said it this way one to take heat off Coach Oats and send a message to his own players about recognizing the situation you are putting yourself in. He is sending a message about situational awareness.

We aren't talking about what Coach Oats said anymore. We are now talking about what Coach Saban said being tone deaf. Attention is on Saban now even if it's bad.

Edit: Think about it too from Coach Saban's perspective. He has this Mitchell situation now with the Ruggs situation still fresh on his mind, the quiet scandal building at UGA. All situations where the young men put themselves in bad situations.

Agree, Coach probably should be telling his young men, do you want NIL money or your Name In a Lineup?

I don’t think Mitchell is a WPWT situation. He was going 140 mph with a bunch of pot and a gun in his car. It’s not like he was in a club at 2:00 AM and got caught up in a situation not of his doing.

What Brandon Miller did was in no way even remotely similar to what Mitchell was doing.

From what was reported, Miller was acting as a designated driver for his friends and arrived to pick them up at a situation he had not been involved in. He cooperated fully with police as a witness.

Tony Mitchell was apparently dealing drugs and endangering lives while driving at an extremely high speed trying to avoid police.

There are no similarities whatsoever in what Miller did and what Mitchell did, so to think they should be dealt with in similar fashion would be totally foolish.

To put it another way the would-be "scribes" (and Pharisees?) amongst us will understand, one might (might) infer criminal intent from Miller's actions, while Mitchell's actions implied positively reeked of criminal intent.

Saban may have been tone deaf, doesn't strike me as such, but even if so he's earned his deafness down the years with the second chances offered, lest we forget, to miscreants subsumed in a violent sport.
