Could we be looking at a case of “look what Hurts was eventually able to do” and thinking that Milroe maybe has the same or better potential? I’m just spitballing. Don’t doubt Milroe doesn’t put in the work, it just hasn’t clicked yet. And with Hurts, I kinda feel like he had to get benched before he really committed to learn to be a passing QB who could read a defense and not use his athletic gifts to bail him out all the time.
We have what, 5 QB’s on scholarship? Simpson came in with a lot of fanfare and has a year under his belt. 2 of the 5, Milroe and Simpson, were supposed to have been developed over the last year as Bryce Young’s backup. Seems they weren’t. I remember BOB telling a reporter all the things Milroe couldn’t do which was relayed on the air in a game. I swear it feels like BOB didn’t bother to try and develop players like he knew he wasn’t going to be around to have to deal with it. Maybe I’m wrong but I swear the QB room ought to be farther along than this.
I need to add, what happened last night in no way was all on the QB. There was a myriad of things that went wrong
Milroe is in his 3rd year in the program. When Hurts was a freshman, he was miles further along as a passer than Milroe is now. Bottom line, Milroe is not a QB.

Milroe threw 2 picks directly to the other team. He had time to throw several times and bailed. One time he literally ran right into a sack after several seconds in the pocket. He is not a QB.
My best friend that played LB at East Carolina summed it up nicely last night in this text:

“Ya’ll have an athlete trying to play QB instead of a QB trying to play QB. Those things are not necessarily inclusive. You can be great athlete and not be a good QB. Conversely, a good to great QB doesn’t necessarily have to be a great athlete. My big takeaway after watching ya’ll tonight-Milroe looks uncomfortable in the pocket. Like a mouse in a room full of cats. His comfort is in making plays with his legs, not his arm.”

I mean, yeah duh. Anyone could have seen the same thing last year. In the NIL and transfer portal era, you don’t have time for a QB to develop. They are either ready now or they aren’t, and if they aren’t, you will lose.

A significant portion of our wins have been because we have simply out recruited and outalented the team on the other side. Saban is not widely regarded as a top X and O coach. GameDay coaching maybe even less so.

His recruiting prowess has been negated by NIL and the transfer portal, moreso the portal.

And to that point, who was his coach trying to mold him to what he needed to be? If he just didn’t think Milroe would ever get it then why didn’t he push Simpson harder to take the reins when Bryce left. I feel like we are going to deal some of the issues from previous coaching mistakes for a bit. Poor coaching can’t be corrected overnight.

So poor old Alabama has ranked at or near #1 in recruiting every single year for the last decade-plus yet somehow NIL is the issue?

Sounds like an excuse to me.
NIL/transfer portal is not THE issue, but it’s a significant one. You can out-recruit everyone, but players can leave whenever they want, wherever they want. You don’t have time to develop players anymore because your opponents can poach them every single year.

When you thrown in Saban’s penchant toward playing more “experienced players” at a certain position, this is the result.

The fact that Milroe won the starting job tells you all you need to know about Simpson. Buchner didn’t have much time with the team, so I can cut him a bit of slack. At this point, we should just play Lonergan and see how it goes. We obviously aren’t winning anything with Milroe.

Saban said as much when Mal Moore hired him in 2007. Whether he was sincere, only Saban knows.

The quote:

“Do you think you’ve hired the best coach in the country?” the 55-year-old Saban asked Moore.

Why, Nick, of course I do,” Moore said, while thinking to himself: For $4 million a year, I sure as hell hope so.

“Well, you didn’t—I’m nothing without my players,” Saban said, locking eyes with Moore. “But you did just hire a helluva recruiter.”

I had people scoff at me last year when I stated the very same thing. This almost unrestricted free agency and NIL will affect the “ace” up CNS’ sleeve. Recruiting.

Fine, where were the slants? Where were the screen passes? Designed QB runs? Play action?
As I said earlier they stacked the box and our WR’s couldn’t get open on about 3/4 of the pass plays called. The 1/4 they did get open we couldn’t connect.

Everyone wants to lay this 100% at Milroe’s feet, but these problems are the same problems we’ve had the last 2 years.

Play action won't work if the threat of the downfield pass is not there. Screen passes are slow developing plays and you have to be able get off the line to set the blocks.

Im honestly surprised UT didn't put all 11 guys on the line like we did in 1992. This was how much they ignored our pass threat...

He also threw two touchdowns that were called back because other players made penalties. Milroe isn't perfect by any means. But last night - like most games - was won and lost at the line of scrimmage.

Should of been three, he threw on to the defense in the end zone and we caught it. Penalty brought it back. There we several other throws our receivers just made great plays, that could have turned awful.

Again, if you have 8 or 9 men in the box playing blitz run or pass you won't win the LOS. No threat of pass this is what you get. You also get fewer Jalen jailbreak runs.
