Gary Danielson - Good Riddance

I’ve never heard anyone advocate for a make-up call from the broadcast booth. Has he ever heard the adage that two wrongs don’t make a right?

The officials missed the face mask call. They probably just didn’t see it. It’s possible to tilt someone’s head to the side without grabbing the face mask, and they probably just weren’t at the right angle. Or maybe they were just idiots. But there was no evidence they were in the tank for us.

The answer is not to compound matters by making up a call. If the goal was to set things right, they failed because the holding call was much more costly to us than the missed face mask was to them.

Well, if Gary truly tries to build up the underdog can we expect him to be Dawg negative and Bama positive next week?

Prolly not 🤣
I was thinking the same thing. I also don’t recall him pulling for the underdog against the gators during Tebow’s heyday or against LSU during Burrows’. Nor was he pulling for us against LSU in 2011 when he thought they were God’s gift to CFB. He even went so far as to wear a purple tie (probably just a coincidence?).

they didn't see the assault on our punter, either, and it was right in front of them.

Not that you're wrong - because you're not.

But they managed to NOT SEE more than I've ever seen anyone not see what they should see but didn't see.

I couldn’t believe that. They showed their guy actually assaulting our punter and then Autrey comes in waving his hands around saying “nothing to see here, please disperse” like he wasn’t damn well looking RIGHT AT IT.

You’re correct.

I also allowed for the fact that they’re just idiots, but the reason I think they just didn’t see it was because, based on the way they called the rest of the game, I don’t think they would have ignored it if they had seen it.

There has to be one in every crowd, and I'm it for today. I'll miss Gary. I spent too much of the day listening to ESPN and Fox color guys and announcers who used odd voice inflections to stand out from other announcers and make a name for themselves.
The guy on Fox Sports who growls whenever he wants to emphasize something is annoying.
Give me Gary any time.
I will say this for Gary, he will say, "In this situation, Ole Miss likes to run a halfback pass." Then, on the very next play, Ole Miss runs a halfback pass.
On the minus side, when Alabama was not called for a facemask penalty in the first quarter, I looked at the guy I was watching with and said, "Gary will talk about that non-call for the rest of the game." And he did.

I can promise you people will be complaining about whoever it is that calls Bama game next year. Bama fans will think they are against Bama and fans from other teams will think they are pro Bama. It’s just the way it is.

Now about last night… I’m usually a defender of Danielson when people are really critical of him. I think he is a decent commentator and an excellent analyst. For some reason I did find him especially annoying and insufferable last night. It was worse than it usually is. I get the criticism of him for last night’s game.

But you are comparing a major national broadcaster to a fill in game guy. Gary is getting the biggest game of the week and producing this crap. Orvlosky, Mowins, Ware, and RGIII are guys that prove your game isn’t that big.

We won't be getting better broadcasters, ESPN is losing money hand over fist from bad deals and have let go of a lot of talent, and with the conference adding OU and Texas there will be multiple "games of the week" when conference games start and I'm afraid there aren't many better options on the horizon. Unless you like the Gus Johnson type who makes a timeout called by a team sound like the Milroe to Bond catch. 🤷‍♂️

Every game I've heard Gus Johnson call it's always a classic. Like, it's the best matchup ever played.

My kids and I make fun of him when he calls a game. Granted, I'm sure a lot of people like his style but we don't. It is complete overkill with the dramatic emphasis on seemingly every play.

Over many years we have chaffed at Gary's commentary. He is like "a dog on a bone" and will not give up on a missed call like the missed face mask even after a number of other calls have been missed during the game. Constantly rooting for the underdog to pull off an upset.

I am not enamored with the CBS pre-game show either but they do have a camera on warm ups and build up to the kick off. They always start the afternoon game on-time unlike ESPN who many times are lucky to catch the end of the first quarter while completing a blow out game.

Disney is, I believe, attempting to polish up ESPN and add a gambling site in order to spin it off.
I can envision a day when we will have to pay dearly to watch college football and still be inundated with commercials. When that happens all of us will feel notalgia for the days of Vern and Gary and commercial TV.

Yeah, that seems to be the biggest issue (to me at least) with Gary. He latches onto a few things early in a game and just builds his entire commentary around it, to the point of OCD-ish, repeating it like Raymond in Rainman. Lol
