JessN: Assistant coach hiring tracker...

I wonder if Deboer had as big a staff at Washington as he will at Alabama? It seems that Alabama has more positions within the football program than most schools. I wonder if meetings are like, “Alright Coach Deboer, we still have this much money in the budget for staff,” and Coach Deboer is like “What? How many more people do I have to hire?”

UPDATE:

Cleaned up a bunch of stuff, added the Eron Hodges, Jatavis Sanders and Ali VandenBerghe hires, moved Jamey Mosley into the support staff column, and removed D.J. Durkin and Joe Cox from the list of rumored candidates.

We're still looking for at least one more on-field coach, and some names, like Ha'Sean Clinton-Dix, are expected to stay in a support role even if not promoted to an on-field role.

Now I'll throw in a prediction: I don't think we have the name of the final assistant on the board yet. Since the new hire is most likely to end up working with OLBs/DEs, it's unlikely that Clinton-Dix will be that person. In addition, William Inge, who was initially not expected to come to Alabama -- then found his name go to the top of a lot of hot boards for the remaining LB position -- has since cooled off considerably. I also believe we're close to filling out the support staff.

Jess, you've been around a minute, just "on paper", how would you assess this coaching staff compared to some of Saban's past staffs?

Just heard on finebaum that the Grubb hire at Bama isn’t official and he is being considered for the Seahawks OC position. Anyone know anything about this?

Just read the same thing on BamaOnLine's landing page (free article). That would be a huge loss for Alabama if it happens.

This entire offseason has reached epic proportions of absurdity.

I assume that if he leaves that means we'll have to re-re-recruit some players who committed, de-committed and then de-committed again.

It's getting to the point that it's all so fluid and stupid that I almost don't even care.

The hire is official as it can be, contracts just aren't in place yet, deal in principle would be the term.

But yes sounds like grubb is being considered for the Seahawks OC job. Cross your fingers. Maybe they'll at least wait til the 30 day portal closes..
These guys have zero loyalty. If he can’t stick around a year, it says a lot about his character.

Loyalty doesn't really factor in here. It's how coaching works, especially with assistants. Grubb has stuck with deboer for 5 years across multiple schools. Including turning Saban down a year ago to stick with him.

If he takes the job (if he's offered) its because he prefers the Seattle area (or doesn't want to move family) or he would rather not do the recruiting grind of college football which is running guys out of college ball left and right with the Portal.

On the bright side, this is deboers offense, it's tye same regardless who calls the players. Shep was co-oc at Washington he will likely be the same at bama. This is like Saban finding a DC.

Stay or go Grubb will likey be a hot name for head coaching jobs next year anyway.

Maybe he won’t get along with the new HC- he wouldn’t leave KD for Saban, and apparently wouldn’t consider anything but a HC gig. In college. Pro might be different, don’t know Grubb but he seems to be strongly relationship-based. Of course, less work and more money(?) will have an appeal, we’ll see.

Money won't be the issue. We would pay him as much or more as the NFL. My guess is if he takes it he just doesn't want to leave the Seattle area or would rather just be a coach with an off-season

My issue with it is that he had to have accepted the position in principle, if he’s been out recruiting with KDB. And to bail after a couple of weeks? This will hurt us in recruiting if he leaves. He needs to determine what is most important to him. But if he leaves, his character is seriously in doubt. Again, no loyalty to a commitment.

No, if he leaves after making a commitment to Alabama, he has no integrity. He could have stayed at Washington. He was offered that job. So it isn't about the area.

ETA - It is entirely possible that he is only interviewing because he wanted the experience. It would be foolish to refuse the interview if he has any aspirations of coaching in the NFL at some point. We should probably give him the benefit of the doubt.
