UFL (A J McCarron's Team)

Fan support was decent in Birmingham considering some of the circumstances. Weather will always be a hinderance to some games in the spring. Boneheaded scheduling like playing while the Tide is having A-Day is another. I talked to people that were a bit uneasy of going to Protective because of its location. Personally I've never had a bad experience or felt the least bit unsafe there. If you've never been to Uptown, check it out. We've been to every game there the last 2 seasons and had a great experience.

The biggest problem I saw when I went was parking. Parking is controlled by the BJCC and if they have an event then it’s a nightmare. There is not any Gameday parking (that i know) and most of the lots are controlled by BJCC.

Protective is probably one of the better venues to watch a game in the state. I’m incredibly happy that BDS and JHS both ended their cycle with the AHSAA championship and gave it back to Birmingham. Watching high school games in a 95-100k seat stadium is just weird and looks bad unless you’re in Texas.

When I went to a UFL game, I went to Washington. The stadium is the one used by DC United. It is a decent venue near Anacostia. The Metro goes to the DC United stadium, (unlike Fedex where the other Washington football players). When I lived in DC, Anacostia was where bodies used to wash up, but it is pretty gentrifies now. Hotel was not too expensive and tickets to the game were around $25. Michigan beat DC, but it was a good experience. I'd do it again.

They are controlled by the BJCC as is Protective stadium. There are several parking options including decks. All are available on game day for $20 per car. We always use the one on 11th Ave on the north side of the BJCC ( The Blue one on the map). It's by far the quickest egress of any ballgame I've been to.

St. Louis got rid of him in the offseason. He has been looking for another team for a few months now
I thought he played pretty well last year, but he is getting long in the tooth for a QB and like most older QBs, that meant in jury that sidelined him for a while.

I think it was his podcast appearances and some of the interviews.
AJ has been a little unlucky. He got drafted by a team with a QB who, while not great, did not screw up royally and rarely was unhealthy. When he did get an opportunity to showcase his skills, others let him down.
I was happy to watch him play, even if it was in the UFL because I know every competitor wants to compete.

AJ is my favorite Bama QB in my lifetime. I didn't get to see Namath, Stabler, or guys like Sloan. My dad got to see them all and he's a big fan of AJ. I watched the UFL just to see him. I'm hoping he will find a team.

Didn't know St. Louis released him. I thought he was one of the best QBs in the UFL.

I recall reading that there were some issues between AJ and the staff. I don't think it's ability that led to the release and I believe he would be one of the better starters in the UFL, if he wanted to play. He hurt his ankle last season and I don't know how that rehab went. As you get older it doesn't get better I can tell you. There was also some scuttlebutt that AJ might come to the Stallions but that never formulated. He may be ready to move on. I'm sure he will have options in media if he wants it. Not too many 2 time national championship QB's around who look good on camera and have a supermodel for a wife.

People like this don't have a hard time finding work. "Work" seeks them out. AJ will be fine and if he really wanted to could EASILY make it as an analyst. He would just have to clean up the language and smooth off some rough edges. I've listened to several podcasts he's been on and the guy knows the game.

Yeah, if he decides to hang up his cleats, he's got options. One of which is probably to do nothing the rest of his life, assuming he's (he and his wife) invested properly.

But IIRC, he has really talked a lot about having joy in playing/competing in the UFL. And to have his boys see him play. At this point, if he plays, it's about that joy. Not the money.
