Numbers are the most dispassionate thing in the universe. The big budget items are Social Security, Medicare and Defense.

Relative to those, the rest is nickels and dimes on the margins. Until they -- especially SSI and Medicare -- get addressed, nothing else will have a material effect.

Late Add: Also interest on the national debt. As was suggested on this board, the Treasury should have refinanced a ton of debt when 30-year money was 3% or less -- because there's no way on God's earth that 3% 30 year money is sustainable. But they took the short-term solution because it was even cheaper in the moment, albeit equally unsustainable.

I think Trump is trying to reduce that line item by pressuring the Fed to reduce interest rates. As stated elsewhere on the board, the problem with that is the Fed controls only the overnight Fed Funds rate. Everything else is controlled by the market -- a concept that seems to elude him and his inner circle.
You give him way too much credit for reasoned thinking.

I did not have “republican party celebrates tax increases” on my 2025 bingo card, and yet here we are.
Basically it's tantamount to a national sales tax.

CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA Apple today announced a new $100 billion commitment to America, a significant acceleration of its U.S. investment that now totals $600 billion over the next four years. Today’s announcement includes the ambitious new American Manufacturing Program (AMP), dedicated to bringing even more of Apple’s supply chain and advanced manufacturing to the U.S. Through AMP, Apple will increase its investment across America and incentivize global companies to manufacture even more critical components in the United States.

“Today, we’re proud to increase our investments across the United States to $600 billion over four years and launch our new American Manufacturing Program,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “This includes new and expanded work with 10 companies across America. They produce components that are used in Apple products sold all over the world, and we’re grateful to the President for his support.”
That will make TACO/MAGA happy and capture headlines.
And here is the reality:

-----
Apple has made similar announcements in the past. In 2018, under pressure during the first Trump administration, Apple committed to spend $350 billion in the U.S. over five years, or about $70 billion per year. In 2021, Apple announced plans to spend $430 billion over five years, or $86 billion per year in the U.S. Wednesday's announcement has the company at $600 billion over four years, or $125 billion per year.

Good point. They will have to follow this up to ensure they keep their commitment!

Trump wants the census takers to not count illegal aliens.
Trump orders new census excluding undocumented immigrants
I would not be opposed philosophically, but that is not what the Constitution says.
Art I, Section 2 states: "Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons."

XIV Amendment states: "Representatives shall be apportioned among the several States according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice-President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State."

So there are a number of terms here which are not synonymous: inhabitant, citizen, free person, person, and voter.
I do not know what the Founders would have made of ten million illegal aliens being in the country. Would they have changed the verbiage in Art. I to be "citizens" instead of "persons?" Don't know. Regardless, what they wrote was "persons."
If I was the president, my guidance to census takers would be to determine immigration status (to the extent possible but given the pace of deportations, a lot of illegal aliens will lie about their immigration status), but count all, because that is what the Constitution directs.

Is not only Congress can order new Census?

can’t wait to hear how this is the fault of woke democrats

In a Truth Social post, Trump said Intel Chief Executive Lip-Bu Tan "is highly CONFLICTED and must resign, immediately. There is no other solution to this problem."
Based on what I'm hearing, the current CEO of Intel, Lip-Bu Tan, is facing calls for his resignation due to concerns about his extensive business ties to China, specifically his investments in numerous Chinese tech firms, some of which are reportedly linked to the Chinese military.

These ties are perceived as a potential conflict of interest, particularly given Intel's significant role in the US semiconductor industry and its access to sensitive technologies. Whether or not this leads to anything is anyone's guess at this point.

That is how you are supposed to talk to Trump:
People don't grasp that all you have to do is adopt the persona of a whore. ACT like he impresses you, ACT like he's the smartest person who ever lived, ACT like you're doing something for him you won't do for others.

And then....if you'll pardon the pun.......screw him.

I agree.
The Poles wanted the US to station an armored division in Poland, and they offered to build a facility to house the division, its personnel and equipment. They promised to name the facility "Fort Trump."
Smart move, if you ask me, if you want him to agree.

Nearly 2 million Americans on unemployment, highest since pandemic era

Continuing claims for unemployment benefits jumped to 1.97 million in late July, according to a Labor Department report, highlighting a weakening labor market.

Bad news. Who will Trump fire now?

There is the second part to Apple investment announcement: https://www.macrumors.com/2025/08/06/apple-india-tariff-increase-no-impact/

As part of that announcement, Apple won't pay tariffs on Indian imports. While I am against tariffs in general, for the government to decide what companies pay tariffs and what not is even worse.

Trump's "free market".
That is how you are supposed to talk to Trump:
A president who openly accepts bribes from companies, just like a dictator. The list of companies/people who have "bent the knee" for our Führer continues to grow.

You know, when I was in high school in the 90s, I would have never believed a dictator could rise to power in this country, because I would have sworn that Americans would fight to stop it. Been pretty easy so far.

I would not be opposed philosophically, but that is not what the Constitution says.
That hasn't stopped Trump or his SCOTUS yet.

In fairness, the Constitution does not stop much of anything in Washington.
