Profanity -- AGAIN?

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

After a long period of compliance, we've had at least three violations of the profanity policy over the past week....that I know of. There could have been others that got by. At least two were by posters of long standing.

Don't post profanity.

Don't link material that contains profanity.

Don't try to skirt the filters with cute rhymes, alternative spellings or transpositions of letters or syllables. Don't link material that does that.

If the material contains words that you wouldn't use when speaking to a Sunday school class of 10-year-olds, don't use it on TideFans.

You and you alone are responsible for what you link. So don't link material that contains profanity, give a warning, and punt to the mods for action.

If you want to make the board aware of material that is interesting, but contains profanity: Give the warning, and general Google prompts. Something along the lines of what I do with Peter Zeihan's material.

Example: "Peter Zeihan has an interesting video take on recent developments in Ukraine. As he's bad to do, there are some non-TF words. If that doesn't bother you, Google Peter Zeihan Ukraine Russia Struggling"

But don't link it to TideFans.

I'm fed up. Apparently, the least bit of understanding has been interpreted as weakness. There's a fix for that.
What I don't understand is the continued warnings. Just make it zero tolerance, instant lifetime ban and be done with it.

Serious question: Let's say we post a link to an article or video that contains no profanity. BUT... the comments do, and the comments are subject to change and evolve over time.

What's the rule on that? It's something I see pretty often.

I grew up in a structured/strict household.

But there was one day my Mom had obviously had enough when we trampled through her kitchen with a freshly mopped kitchen floor.......in our muddy shoes.

That was the first time I remember ever hearing a curse word coming out of Mom's mouth.

"You little (s-bomb) birds!" :D

Many thanks for this discussion. I appreciate what you mods are doing to keep this discussion channel free of profanity.
I have never heard a reasonable explanation as to why so many people think they have to use strong profanity in order to make a statement. It is a profound indication of a declining culture and intelligent.
Nick Saban says hello...;)

As CA stated, whether you agree or not, when in Rome...

I would wager that after being banned, the malfaiteur messages the mod saying something along the lines of "I know big boy rules apply, but I'm asking that they not apply in my particular case."

I curse PLENTY in my daily life. But I have never found it hard to keep that off of this site (except for a slip up with a link I thoughtlessly posted once) and have been surprised by how much I appreciate the policy. There are plenty of places online where you can curse and most of those places are incredibly toxic.

Tidefans, even when heated, has always been very mild by comparison to most of the internet and I've always appreciated that.

There is a time and place. If I spoke in court the way I speak on a fishing trip I'd be in jail.

33% of my vocabulary is curse words between me and friends but 0% of mine is online. Anyone with half a brain can differentiate when and where to speak as they so choose.

Continued warnings are beneficial to newcomers who may have missed that part of the rules.
I just don't feel the need to use bad words, even if in a positive good natured way. Merriam Webster has plenty of decent alternative words to choose from. Some even better than the bad words.

Some people must’ve forgotten what it was like to have their mouth washed out with soap or get a spoonful of castor oil for saying bad words at home. Guess I’m showing my age now. Lol

This! I’ve gone to other boards looking to see what another fanbase was saying. Thread after thread ends up being constant cursing and name calling at other posters. I appreciate the folks here keeping the slope from getting slippery.
