After watching the replay, I think about the football post-game threads of "good, bad, and ugly".
The good. We showed we can play better defense than what we normally exhibit. It was obvious in the early part of the second half that our guys became more aggressive - and that's when we closed the gap. Sherrill also showed he can use that huge body as a weapon, especially in the second half. It seems to me that he struggles to "feel" when he's got a defender beat... hope he continues to improve there. We also showed we can win by attacking the rim when our outside shooting is not available. CNO did a good job last night in the second half primarily playing guys who could slash and score. Also, kudos for changing in the second half to a "foul them out" approach. Last, we showed we can win close games and come back from tough deficits in big games - something that has totally abandoned us in recent big games. And we showed heart and escaped with a big win, especially beating them while playing according to their philosophy (limit threes).
The bad. A couple of our guys off the bench - enough said. The refusal to take TO's, especially in the first half. That's been discussed ad nauseam and the team suffers in big games because they're not utilized. Bol Bowen's injury looks to be serious enough it's really hampering his play - hope he can get healed up because we badly need him. Last, we don't have a defensive "stopper" this year. We might not have always liked them offensively, but Mo D or Jaren S from last year (Herb Jones' type) would have locked on to Acuff or Thomas and made the other team members beat us.
The ugly. Our defensive effort for most of the night. At some point if our perimeter defense is this bad, I'd rather them push teams inside like Arkansas did to us last night. Trelly shooting when drifting - with his feet set he's money, but with feet not set he's going to miss nearly every time. Lack of adjustments defensively after their guys started fouling out. For example, in the last 3 minutes of the game, Acuff should have been forced to get the ball out of his hands.
If you're Arkansas, you're happy with the game because you went in shorthanded and almost pulled off the upset. Going forward, you've got to like your chances in a rematch if healthy and on a neutral court. If you're Bama, you're also likewise happy. To play terrible defense most of the night, make very few threes, and give up a career night to Acuff while still walking away with the win is impressive... especially if going forward TBB can get healthier and the perimeter defense can be improved.
