Trump has appointed Bill Pulte as acting director of national intelligence, elevating the housing regulator to one of the government’s most sensitive national security posts. The move installs a fiercely polarizing figure atop the intelligence community at a moment of heightened political tension and ongoing turnover inside the administration.

Bill Pulte, 38, is a housing‑finance regulator, private equity founder and heir to the PulteGroup home‑building fortune whose career has been marked by aggressive tactics, high‑profile feuds and a knack for inserting himself into political and corporate power centers.

Since taking over the FHFA in 2025, Pulte has consolidated control over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, fired senior staff, sidelined ethics officials and pushed abrupt policy shifts—including a widely criticized proposal for 50‑year mortgages. He has also used his authority to pursue Trump’s political adversaries, sending criminal referrals targeting New York Attorney General Letitia James, Senator Adam Schiff, Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and former Representative Eric Swalwell. The referrals have prompted lawsuits, congressional letters and a federal watchdog investigation into whether Pulte abused government databases.

IOW, he is a political hack with no experience in a job that specifically requires that experience, by law.

MAGA, don't like being compared to Nazis, stop acting like Nazis.

Getting rid of that rule of law where what matters is not the law. What matters is who you know, who you are connected to, and whether or not the law is going to apply to you. And the people in charge of a lot of the federal government are people who really think that they can decide who gets the law and who doesn't get the law.

And where that leads seems to me to have been very clear over the weekend when the former leader of Border Patrol, Gregory Bevino, who was in charge of Border Patrol and very deliberately urging violence on the part of Border Patrol agents and he was in charge when Alex Prey and Renee Good were killed and he gets moved off stage after that. He was this weekend at a far-right conference in Portugal with again a far-right American but also a number of far-right influencers and activists from around Europe and the US. And there he quite openly talked about his embrace of those same ideas that Steven Miller in the deputy assistant chief of staff in the White House has embraced. The idea that black and brown people are replacing white Europeans and by extension white Americans and that it is a fight of civilization to get rid of them.

And he actually said that he admired he did an interview while he was there and he said he admired Irwin Raml who was a Nazi of course he was an inspirational figure and that he hoped that his, he thought it would be fantastic if, his tenure at the head of border patrol served as inspiration that was his word for others and I think you can see here the direction of that far right in American politics going the way that the Nazis went, going the way that extreme fascist movements go toward the idea that certain people are outside of the law, whether they're incarcerated in a concentration camp or whether they are political opponents or so on.

And that destruction of the rule of law, that worries me more than virtually anything that has happened in since Trump took office a second time. Maybe not. I mean, there's been a lot going on, but it has worried me a little bit that in the protests against Delaney Hall, which are correct to be protesting Delaney Hall, people seem to be focusing just on the human side, which is of course vitally important, but it's not just about making sure incarcerated people get good food or or less crowded conditions or even getting rid of that particular concentration camp. It's about making sure that none of us are outside the law, which is the system that the Trump administration seems to be trying desperately to impose right Now.
