New Coach Speculation

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on the topic here!!!

With Saban I have to wonder if two years in the NFL is enough to get it out of his system. The Dolphins weren't in great shape when he took over and I'm not sure if 1 3/4 years is long enough to judge whether he can be a success in the NFL. Unless he has just realized that there is something he doesn't like about coaching in the NFL, prima donna players, etc.

Steve Sarkisian - USC Assistant Coach/QB Coach

Why not get a young, confident, coach from a top notch program? I think we can all agree that USC is by far the best program in the country right now.

YEAR TEAM POSITION BOWL
2005 USC Asst. Head Coach/QB Rose
2004 Oakland Raiders Quarterbacks -
2003 USC Quarterbacks Rose
2002 USC Quarterbacks Orange
2001 USC Offensive Assistant Las Vegas
2000 El Camino JC Quarterbacks CHIPs For Kids

Steve Sarkisian, who is in his fourth stop at USC as an assistant coach or athlete, returned to the Trojan staff in Feburary of 2005 as the assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach.

In 2005, quarterback Matt Leinart won the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting, was a finalist for the Davey O'Brien, Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards and was an All-American first teamer. He set 16 USC records (11 were Pac-10 marks and 2 was an NCAA record). USC's 4,157 passing yards was a school record and the Trojans were fifth nationally in passing (319.8).

He spent the 2004 season as the quarterbacks coach with the Oakland Raiders. His quarterbacks passed for more than 4,000 yards in 2004 as Oakland ranked eighth in passing in the NFL.

Sarkisian, 32, originally joined the USC staff as an offensive assistant in January of 2001. Then, after joining San Diego State briefly as the quarterbacks coach in January of 2002, he returned to USC in March of 2002 to handle the quarterbacks fulltime for 2 seasons (2002-03).

In 2003, quarterback Matt Leinart was an All-American first teamer and was the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year (he finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting) while setting Pac-10 season records for TD passes (35) and consecutive passes without an interception (212). He also had the highest passing efficiency rating of any USC quarterback (163.2). USC won its first national championship since 1978.

In 2002, quarterback Carson Palmer won the Heisman and Unitas Award en route to setting the Pac-10 career records for passing yards and total offense (he was the No. 1 pick in the 2003 NFL draft), plus he was an All-American first teamer.

USC played in the 2001 Las Vegas Bowl, 2003 Orange Bowl, 2004 Rose Bowl and 2006 Rose Bowl (BCS Championship Game).

He spent the 2000 season as the quarterbacks coach at El Camino Junior College in Torrance (Calif.). His quarterback, Robert Hodge, earned All-American honors. El Camino played in the CHIPs For Kids Bowl.

Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiate and pro levels. He was with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for 3 seasons (1997-99). He started in 1999 and threw 16 touchdowns.

He had a record-setting 2-year (1995-96) career at BYU, where he was coached by former USC assistant Norm Chow. He completed 549-of-824 passes (66.6%) for 7,755 yards and 55 TDs in his career. His 162.0 career passing efficiency rating is third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation in passing efficiency (173.6, the seventh best mark ever) as the Western Athletic Conference champion Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, won All-American second team honors and played in the East-West Shrine Game and Hula Bowl. As a 1995 junior, he made the All-WAC team and led BYU to the WAC title. Against Fresno State that season, he set an NCAA game completion percentage record when he hit 31-of-34 passes (91.2%).

He came to BYU from El Camino Junior College, where he starred for 2 seasons (1993-94). He was a J.C. All-American first teamer as a 1994 sophomore and won All-Mission Conference honors in 1993 as a freshman. He also played baseball (shortstop) at El Camino in 1993.

He actually began his college career at USC, spending the fall of 1992 on the Trojan baseball team before transferring to El Camino.

He was a standout football and baseball player at West Torrance (Calif.) High. He earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from BYU in 1997 after getting his associate's degree in general studies from El Camino in 1994.

He was born March 8, 1974. He and his wife, Stephanie, have a 4-year-old daughter, Ashley, and a son, Brady, 2.

I don't see Saban leaving Miami just yet. They've won 4 in a row and are still in the playoff hunt.

The Navy coach (Johnson) is like hiring Shula all over again. No offense.

Top choice is definitely Spurrier but his age is a concern.

Since we're throwing out names, here's a strict diciplinarian: Bill Burgess of Jax State fame. Bring back the wishbone baby!!!

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on the topic here!!!

Let me first say that I will believe Spurrier is coming to Bama only when it is officially announced and I see Spurrier say it himself. With that said, though, I do believe that there are quite a few reasons for him to leave USC for Bama...

1. His current salary is almost 1/2 million less than Shula's was and would stand to get paid more by Bama because of his track record. Spurrier - $1.3 million/Shula almost $1.8 million and Spurrier would most likely come close to gaining $1 million more a year by coming to Bama.

Spurrier was offered more at USC, he turned it down because he wanted the money given to his assistants.

Where are you hearing that from, AlanBama?

A friend with connections. Also, it was recently given more credibity by being mentioned on the radio just a few hours ago that Jimmy Sexton was in the middle of this thing and that it would be one of HIS main guys.

According to other reports, Spurrier gave a statement directly to Tony Barnhardt that he was happy where he was and he wasn't leaving. Whoever it was that said something about Houston Nutt got some different info than everyone else from what I heard.

Also, it should be noted that Saban was NOT happy in Miami or the NFL and being a HC in the NFL wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. Miami has seriously fallen on hard times over the past several years and he supposedly hates how the city has dumped the team. There are literally no fans at the games and nobody cares. Nick likes being "the man" and he's simply not "the man" in Miami as nobody cares unless they win, which they're not.

Anyway, I am hearing it from a few different sources...one I know personally does on occasion get accurate inside information and then it was confirmed when it was also discussed on the radio out of Tuscaloosa that Jimmy Sexton was in the middle of everything. It simply lends credibility to my sources comments.

How can you compare CMS and CPJ? One coach has won multiple National Championships and one coach has won.... well you get the idea.

The only question in my mind about CPJ is, can he deal with the pressure/expectations?

Re: Steve Sarkisian - USC Assistant Coach/QB Coach

Oh for Pete's sake!!!

If all we wanted was a good assistant, we could have kept Shula and made him the OC.

Despite all the USC hype, Ed Orgeron is not exactly setting the world on fire at Ole Miss - and neither is Norm Chow in the NFL.

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on the topic here!!!

Here are my thoughts, not worth much, but here they are just the same...

1. Saban is not going to leave the NFL, yet. The only way I believe he would, is if Bama offered him enough money to lure him away. With Pro salaries being what they are, I don't think that is going to happen.

2. Spurrier will not be coaching Bama next season. He is getting toward the end of his career and making a change at this juncture would be like starting over. At 7-5 he is a semi-god at SC and very comfortable. Although, this thought just occurred to me...he could win an SEC championship someday at SC and have a street named after him or he could win a National Title at Bama and have a 9' bronze statue placed in the Walk of Champions, have a street named after him, have a few thousand baby boys named after him, be forever immortalized in an entire state, etc.

3. Stoops doesn't leave Oklahoma for another college job.

4. Petrino plays Alabama like every other school, other than Auburn, that has offered him so he can get more perks at Louisville. Besides that, he seems to be close to the Auburn evil empire which couldn't sit well with Bama.

5. Jim Grobe is a possibility, but has only had 1 season at Wake where his offense ranked in the top 100 in passing. The 3 seasons before this awesome 10 win season, Wake was 5-7/4-7/4-7. Grobe may very well get the most out of his players, but he runs a very run oriented seemingly conservative offense and Wake's defenses haven't been consistently all that good either.

6. Paul Johnson is another possibility, but isn't proven on a major college level. Wouldn't really have any bang to the announcement. No way of knowing if he could make a splash in recruiting. Like Grobe, it would be a slight risk as to whether he could make it in the SEC at Bama.

Hate to sound like a doom and gloomer, I'm generally not one at all, but I have a bad feeling that this coaching search may not end as well as we may like (Mal & Co. don't really leave me very confident). Here's to hoping I am wrong.

Jay Barker- We could use a good Godly Christian Coach that also had talent. Even if he is not the head Coach Alabama needs Jay Barker. I mean who else writes Romans 8:28 after there signatures.

Has anyone mentioned Jeff Tedford's name just wondering heard his name mentioned about an hour ago!!

The offense will be subpar and under his style of play if Bama gets down a few scores it will be nearly impossible to mount a comeback. Look at the Rutgers game this year for reference.

Bama needs a coach that will utilize the recievers. It was sickening to watch the games this year knowing that Brown and Hall were going to be neglected due to the play calling.

Bama needs a coach like Spurrier to revive the program. He'll coach for at least 6 years and that will be plenty of time to get us to the BCS Championship. He'll leave on top and have the top coaches in the country salivating for the job.

Actually your thought is a little backwards. Truth is, if Spurrier wins just an SEC title at USC he would have a 9' bronze statue placed in the newly formed USC Walk of Champions where he would be the charter inductee, have a street in every town outside of Pickens County named after him, have a few thousand baby boys and even some baby girls named after him, be forever immortalized in an entire state, etc. or he could win a National Title at Bama and if he struggles the next year he may still get fired.
