New Coach Speculation

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on the topic here!!!

Spurrier is 61 and in ten years he will be 71. That is still younger than Joe Paterno or Bobby Bowden is today. Hang on Bama Fans,,,AIR SPURRIER is on his way...

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on the topic here!!!

Actually your thought is a little backwards. Truth is, if Spurrier wins just an SEC title at USC he would have a 9' bronze statue placed in the newly formed USC Walk of Champions where he would be the charter inductee, have a street in every town outside of Pickens County named after him, have a few thousand baby boys and even some baby girls named after him, be forever immortalized in an entire state, etc. or he could win a National Title at Bama and if he struggles the next year he may still get fired.

You may be right, but I would like to think that even USC wouldn't go that far after an SEC championship win.

For what it's worth, I believe that the plan was to keep Shula but he refused to make the neccessary staff changes and was, therefore, shown the door. It wasn't simply because Bama had a 6-6 record this year, it was the idea of no major adjustments to improve the program. We are hard on our coaches a lot of times, but that comes with practically every storied program.

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on prospects here!!!

I don't think this is a possibility at all, but since this is a speculation thread. I haven't seen David Cutcliffe's name mentioned anywhere. Now his name wouldn't make a huge splash, but he has head coaching experience and is a good offensive coordinator. To make it even better, he is a former Alabama player. His close ties to Fulmer and UT as well as his role in our NCAA troubles might be a problem. I've always thought he was a good coach and Ole Miss made a mistake in firing him. Not sure how I would react to him at Alabama.

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on prospects here!!!

another name that I haven't seen mentioned in George O'Leary....he took UCF to a bowl game....he did a good job at Georgia Tech and would have probably done great at Notre Dame

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on the topic here!!!

Jay Barker- We could use a good Godly Christian Coach that also had talent. Even if he is not the head Coach Alabama needs Jay Barker. I mean who else writes Romans 8:28 after there signatures.

You're not seriously thinking that we need to hire a football coach because of his religious convictions now are you? I mean give me a break! I'm so sick and tired of people electing our governing officials due to their religious convictions and now you're suggesting we hire a coach because of his? Religion has its place in society and it will always find itself in athletics, but frankly I could care less if our coach attends church, synogogue or a temple on a regular basis. His job is to coach young men into a winning football team, not into Godly young men.. Yes, he should also attempt to mold them into fine upstanding young men too, but that's what their clergy is for. We have athletes who are Christians, Muslims, Catholics and at times Jews and other religions...it is not our coachs duty to turn them all into Christians.

With that said, I'll get off of my soapbox and hope we just hire a coach who will WIN often and get graduation rates up. Let's leave the religion to our clergy members on staff.

Now this is a real dark horse name. O'Leary was a very good coach and an outstanding recruiter at GT. With the resume' issue settled this might be an excellent hire.

Didn't O'Leary fare well against his rival?

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on prospects here!!!

Former ECU head coach Steve Logan has a talk radio show here in the Raleigh/Durham area, and this subject was just discussed on his show. Obviously there is no link to this, but he said on the air that he spoke to someone "close to the situation" that Alabama would be putting a compensation package together that would "cross your eyes".

Translation: They're going for the home run.

Again, no link to this since I heard it on the radio....maybe it's Logan ;)

To me Spurrier $30 million for 10 years, sound like an "eye crossing" contract. If we are really going after someone on the "S List", it will take that kind of contract.

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on prospects here!!!

Heard they are offering $2 Million per year for 5 years to CSS. Also heard Saban said he would come for Shula's salary.

Saban makes $4M a year. Why would he come to Alabama for $1.55M?

I think your information was incorrect.

Doesn't make any sense to me either I'm just letting you know. I don't think we'll get either one of them. Although I do think they are the best two choices out there.

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on prospects here!!!

Mich St. and Iowa St. are now out of the coaching market. I certainly hope our circus ends soon.

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on the topic here!!!

The Navy coach (Johnson) is like hiring Shula all over again. No offense.

Are you kidding me? Have you seen Paul Johnson's credentials? I would assume the only way you could have possibly come up with your opinion is because you haven't seen his list of accomplishments:

*2 National Championships(Back to Back) and 1 National Runner-Up

*5 Consecutive Conference Championships

*Holds the NCAA 1-AA record for a 39 game home winning streak!

*52 Wins in 4 seasons-the most ever in all of the NCAA!

*4th Coach ever in NCAA history to win 50 games in 4 years!

*National 1-AA Coach of the Year(4 Straight Years!)

*Took over a winless team and had them in a bowl game in 2 seasons. This is only the 6th time to ever happen in NCAA history!

*Historic Accomplishments at what was a perennial loser in Navy, including 3 consecutive bowl games for the first time in Navy history.

*Tied a school record 10 wins in a season. Last time this was done at Navy was 1905! It is somewhat likely they will get 10 wins again this year.

*Prior to his arrival, Navy had only 2 winning seasons in 20 years.

*Knows how to dominate rivals. 4-0 versus Navy's top rival Army.

*Winner of the Commander-In-Chief's Trophy for 3 straight years by sweeping the other academies! Clearly dominates like competition!

*Top Rushing Offense in the Country at Navy!

*Versatile coach. Coached both successful high power passing offenses and rushing offenses.

*His high powered, record-breaking passing offense at Hawaii earned him top

*WAC OC honor. Hawaii was WAC champions for the first time ever during his OC tenure. Also was OC at Navy with the spread offense, breaking 5 school records.

*Western Athletic Conference Offensive Assistant of the Year Award recipient and Sporting News Top 10 Assistant Coach Honoree

*Well rounded coach. Defensive minded, as well as offensive minded. Former defensive line coach at GSU.

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on prospects here!!!

If Saban is our number 1 choice, and SS is 2, and say Petrino is 3, Stoops 4, Rodriguez 5, Grobe 6, and Johnson 7, etc. Lets just say that is the list or a close proximity of it like Jess alluded to. How far will we have to go down that list till we get our coach. Mal Moore said a proven winner is what we are after. That becomes a matter of opinion. Everyone would agree that the first 5 guys on the list are just that. However, I will have to be convinced that it is possible to be a proven winner at Wake or Navy. One year does not make a coach, as we obviously saw last year. I am not saying that these guys will not get the job done and they will get my upmost support. Once you become the Head Coach at UA then in my book you are the man. However, I will not expect much more than what we were already getting unless we get a super stud!!! I am so sick of changing coaches and losing. I hope that this hire will be our answer no matter who it is!!!

Re: Steve Sarkisian - USC Assistant Coach/QB Coach

...I think it's clear he wouldn't fit the description of "proven head coach" that MM has continually repeated...

...and besides, his only year away from the USC program recently was the year they went undefeated and won the NC & the year Leinart won the Heisman ;)

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on prospects here!!!

FYI - Chuck Amato got fired at NC State today. I know that he probably isn't a viable candidate, but knowing Mal Moore's HC hiring records, don't rule him out.

I hope you were joking with this statement. I live in Raleigh, and Chuck Amato is nothing short of a clown. He's an alumni and former player at NC State and none of my Wolfpack friends respect his antics any longer. His teams are not disciplined, and he has no offensive imagination ever since Philip Rivers left. I will not be a Tide fan if Amato is running the team.

As you say, it's all a matter of opinion. If you look at posts on this board, plenty of people would argue that Petrino and Rodriguez haven't proven anything either. They're in the Big East, Petrino is doing it with someone else's recruits, etc. I honestly don't know much about Johnson, but he and Grobe seem to share this in common, they both appear to have over-achieved with far less talent than an Alabama. Their players play hard, disciplined football and they have adapted their offenses to suit their personnel, not attempted to force one offensive scheme on every team. To me any of those seven would be a MAJOR improvement over what we had. I don't hold out much hope for the the "S list" and I have my doubts about Petrino.

Re: New Coach Speculation (merged; keep thoughts on prospects here!!!

What about some NFL coaches besides Saban? I know a few are on the hot seat this year. Any chance we're looking at them?
