Paul Johnson - seriously?

How many wins does RP at Hoover have?

RP coaches in probably the biggest hotbed for resources and population in the state (not to mention the fact that a lot of his players come from outside the community i.e. the Clear brothers). Plus they play 15 games a year if the go to the finals. Johnson coaches at a school that doesn't offer athletic scholarships, is extremely difficult to get into and gives his players close to 0% chance of going to the NFL when they're done. Despite this he managed to beat 7 non service academy division one schools this year. Please try to come up with an accurate comparison and at the very least have the courtesy to run your own Google search to see the man's stats at UH before you get on here and try to bash him.

Again, how much did they throw the ball out of that spread at GA Southern?

I take it back, it was Navy I was thinking of when he was the Offensive Coordinator.

I see you're relatively new to the board as far as posting goes, but doing your own research goes a long way in making your opinions more respected.

Anyway, it does not list specific numbers on passing when he ran the spread at Navy, but I think the point is, he is not just a triple-option coach as you previously stated. He would adapt an offense to the personell here. Don't forget that we are traditionally a power running team and don't have to throw the ball all over the field to win.

Wow - I didn't realize saying that maybe PJ wasn't the best fit for Bama was "bashing" him. My bad. PJ rules. Perhaps would could implement some type of quaduple option.

Exactly how much effort do you think it takes to instill discipline in an individual in the Naval Academy? If they had discipline problems they wouldn't be there in the first place....... Also you have to have a little gray matter between the ears to get accepted into the service academies, can you say the same at Alabama? Be truthful and watch some of the interviews....... The post earlier said he set rushing records at Hawaii, how hard would that be? Don't they chuck the ball all over the field, although the screen passes sometimes count as rushing, right?

I think those are all points to be considered when thinking about CPJ.

Saying he isn't the best fit at UA is an acceptable argument and one that right now I'm inclined to agree with. But your post took more of the tone of questioning his entire career and coaching ability. That coupled with the fact you still haven't provided stats or links to prove any claim you've made is moderately annoying. One stat I'll give that is probably most impressive is the fact that he's winning at a service academy.

Winning at a Service Academy

good point - especially since Bobby Ross, who has won a NC and gone to a super bowl ain't winning at Army.

Hmmmm

WHile I certainly wouldn't want to moderately annoy you, my point was that people counter the argument that PJ is an option guy with the argument that he threw it all over the place at Ga Southern and UH, and I asked if anyone actually had stats to show this. So no, I didn't provide links or stats for my question if anyone had any links or stats.

"What were UH's stats (w/l, offense, etc) while he was there..."

Paul Johnson's never threw the ball all over the place. In some of the readings I've done he ran a similar offense at ga southern (his offense compiled 7 yds passing in his semifinal win against Deleware in 1999). I doubt he would come in here and install a run and shoot but I think he'd throw the ball more (purely speculation). He's got a better record than Grobe in what I consider to be a harder situation. I think he should probably be on the top of the B list.

You can't be serious. What game were you watching? I saw a very disciplined well coached football game. He does not have the athletes that most DI coaches have but look what he has done at Navy of all places.

Agreed. He's got some wicked voodoo spinning in that backfield.

It's pretty sad that some of the posters on this board have gone to attacking a coach just because they saw him coach ONE game and didn't like what they saw. Forget that he won the game and that Navy is 9-3, and one bowl game away from having their second 10 win season in a row (at a service academy). Forget that he won two National Championships in D-1AA. All the articles written about Paul Johnson seem to be correct in saying that ignorant people will see his offense as a draw back, and not realize that he has to run that offense to suit the talent that he has. Some people obviously don't know a winner when they see one. I'll be very happy if we can get Rodriguez, but if we don't, then PJ would be an excellent choice IMO.

1. Im sure this game was an anomaly, and PJ usually throws it around pretty well. Oh wait, Navy is dead last in passing yards....

2. It's a shame that if you aren't on the PJ bandwagon, you're an "ignorant" fan.

#1 Being able to "throw it around" has nothing to do with PJ's coaching ability. His offense is suited to the run game because it gives him the best chance to win with the type of athletes he has.

#2 Yes, making a blind statement about a coach just because you saw one game he coached does make you ignorant.

Well, my criticism really has nothing to do with the number of PJ-coached Navy teams I've watched play. Are you saying that Navy doesn't always run the option all game long like they did today? So your "just because you saw one game he coached" is a pretty irrelevant point. I won't call you ignorant though. I was raised better.

Good day sir!

Yep, Navy runs a triple option offense and I know they run the option all game long. They always run the option because it bests suits their talent level. When your starting QB is 5'9", what other choice do you have? If you think Paul Johnson or any other good coach would not open up the passing game to utilize the talent level at Alabama, then that's your opinion.

In the modern era the triple option is the only offense that has had any success at the service academies. Army fired a triple option oriented coach for a hot DII guy (Todd Berry) who would throw it about 30-40 times a game and hasn't been able to establish any kind of sustained attack since (to include the only recorded 0-13 season in football history). The fact that PJ runs the triple option at Navy seems to infer that he understands the challenge he faces every game.
