ESPN News just reported,"Back to Saban"

Correct me if I am wrong, but I haven't heard any reports on ESPN(TV, not ESPN Radio) on the supposed offers and rejections in the last week. That is what I thought was odd. They haven't said much until today. So if they hear Saban is going to interview, I am inclined to believe the ball IS in his court.....I don't think we go wrong with him or RR. Roll Tide. Off to church.

This is going to sound arrogant, but I don't care: We know more about this search than ESPN does. Period.

I have heard on many radio talk shows (by the hosts with contacts) that Saban was the coach who contacted Bama. I dismissed all of the talk as I could not imagine he would want to come back to the college ranks. I don't have any sources, any connections or any crystal ball. I did hear during the WVA game last night the commentator said he expected CRR to be at Bama.
S. Alexander's comment follows the coach with the Natl title. this is like one of those I SPY books my grandchildren love. The answer is right there but you have to look very, very close to find it. RTR

When did this site ever say that?

Answer: It never did.

We've maintained from day one that Saban was the school's primary target. The only attention we gave to Spurrier was on day three of the search, when we noted that his name was getting so much mention in traditional media outlets that Spurrier was probably a player in the search, but also closed with this comment: "The next step will be to see whether Alabama and Spurrier do indeed meet, as the supposed meeting could not be confirmed by either TideFans.com or the Tuscaloosa News’ Tidesports.com. If the meeting fails to take place, it will add fuel to the argument that the entire pursuit of Spurrier is a ruse. "

I wasn't accusing you guys of saying it. I heard it said in other places, and I also heard that Spurrier was a done deal. :)

I wonder if Jimbo would follow Saban to Bama, I heard he is unhappy working under Les Miles.

Jeremy, i`m with you. Bad speller or not, my common sense agrees with your common sense that Sabine will not come, err, Saban!
I liked the way you emphatically expressed your opinion that Saban will not come, furthermore, I do not need a source.
Oh, that's cute...really. The popular attitude is that you need to have a proof that a coach has an interest in coming. There has been no proof that Saban wants the job. Oh sure, there's been talk on the radio and tv, but isn't that still just talk? There are no signs pointing to Saban. The comments he has made tell me he clearly doesn't want the job...or maybe he just likes insulting his future employers? I'm quite familiar with "coach speak", but Saban has taken it a little further. Until there is proof that he is coming, why should proof be required for the opposite? The whole situation pretty much speaks for itself. You can call us morons for not following the hype if you want to, but it wont change the end result.

I think it is safe to say that any "breaking" news will not be first heard on ESPN. I loved the fact that UCLA kid called them out yesterday after the upsetting USC......CLassic!

Back to Saban. I have no idea but it would feel odd the first five minutes if he accepted. I would get over it.

I think that is the biggest thing if nick saban did contact Ala about the job. It would be nice. Maybe he will need a def coach so we will be able to keep Coach Kines

To answer an earlier question, a "coup" would be signing a coach that no one ever expected; one that would catch almost everyone by surprise. An example might be Jim Tressel. That would catch everyone off guard. (Please understand that I do not expect JT to even be contacted by us, so don't ridicule me. That was only an example of a coup.)

I do not doubt you for a second, but I know quite a few professional FB coaches. They have huge egos. It is really hard to guess what one might do.

Most of those that I know admit that they have made really important decisions that just didn't make sense on a whim. They have this sense that, no matter what they try, they will find a way to make it work out. It takes a lot to get one to admit defeat. Saban, by walking away now, will be admiting defeat. Spurrier was able to do so, but he was humiliated. Is Saban ready to walk away after 2 respectable seasons???

I hope that it happens, but I wouldn't mind seeing a younger coach in here either...

espn is wrong. everyone on this entire board is wrong. we will NOT get nick saben. i wish the discussion would end.

No, this discussion will not end, and frankly, I'm getting tired of you trying to rain on some good discussion. We heard you the first ten times you said it. You don't believe he'll come. Fine.

Why in the world would the UA be spending all their money, time, and resources on NS, if there was NO chance to land him.....that is were you need to use your common sense. Will he come, who knows, but the higher ups, MM, & Witt are not in the positions they are in b/c they are stupid. Just sit back and relax, everything will work itself out.

I'm not calling anyone stupid. Anything is possible. I just don't think it will happen. I will let it go. Ya'll have fun discussing Saban, Saben, Sabine, Sabon...and whatever other spellings folks can come up with. :)

Let's say we prepared an offer for Saban and the ball is in fact in his court. We cannot wait for an answer more than a few days. I think over the next few days, Saban or CRR will either be gainfully employed by Alabama or eliminated from the list of candidates. Atleast the possibility of them coming would be equal to that of Spurrier.....slim to none.

With that said.....let's get a coach this week and put him to work!

Roll Tide!!!!!

I don't "like" saban, and think he would only be here as a stop on his path through all the football world. Then he will be gone, whether or not he has success. grobe or Rodreguiez would be better and possibly long term solutions.

Uh huh...well its just an opinion. No need to get bent out of shape over that.

Jess: Assuming coach Saban did decide to come to Bama. Would it be possible or likely for Bama to sign him prior to the end of the Dolphins season? ie...let him sign a contract now that would go in effect at the end of the NFL season?

Also, i wonder how his is Dolphin's contract structured? What if the Dolphins wanted to keep him and he were still on contract? Could he quit and there be no repercussions as long as he left the NFL? Or would Bama have to pony up some cash?

In other words, it would be nice if Saban could go ahead and sign with Bama, finish his season with the NFL and then get to work on recruiting. If we could announce his name as the new HC at Bama immediately after he signs, I think we could still land some outstanding recruits. But i dont know how this works.

Let me expand on the ESPN comment:

When I was working for a paper in Tennessee, we had a missing persons case that was national in scope and CNN came into town to do a story on it. Who did they call for information? The paper.

They interviewed one of our staff writers for about an hour, then asked her to be on the show later that night. When the story ran, the first 15 minutes consisted of CNN laying out the story that we gave them (but not attributing it to us). They put our reporter on for about 30 seconds to basically confirm the account as if we were confirming THEIR reporting.

If ESPN breaks it, they will break it from a side we don't have good sources on -- i.e., the WVU side or the Miami side, depending on the coach. Someone like John Clayton could get that info from the NFL end, but ESPN doesn't have thousands of people out on the frontside of these searches to know when movement starts (i.e., private contact to gauge interest, etc.).

I'm not calling ESPN a bunch of hacks but they're not the first ones to always get stuff. I'd put my money on the first "public" account either coming from the T-News, a paper in W.Va. or a paper in Miami, depending on who actually takes the job.
