Today's B'ham news article (front left column of sports page) about Bama and Gottfried is sickening. We have a coach who is quoted as saying that tying for the West is some great accomplishment....a la Tuberville. He even says that if his conference record is "2-12", as long as it wins the west he will call it a "championship". I don't know of anyone other than Mark Gottfried or Tommy Tuberville who thinks of this accomplishment as anything to talk about. Oh, I forgot the 80,000 Barn football fans who beat their chests about "winning or tying" for the western division" for x amount of years.

If this is the way Gottfried thinks, then the message is clear...he's got to go. This explains the lack of showing any sense of urgency in the past several games.

We deserve better. Roll Tide Roll!!

Football is totally different from basketball. In basketball, you can lose several games and still win a division, conference, or national title. Gottfried's point, as he states at other points in that article and on his post-game show, is that regardless of the mistakes this team has made, a chance still exists to win the division. Winning the division is important and would put Alabama in even better position for the NCAA tournament.

I'm sure this will fall on deaf ears because it's obvious your mind is made up about Gottfried.

I'm not taking sides in this, but from what I take from JW's post there is an admitted attitude of complacency in the coach. Although there is indeed a difference between football and basketball, one thing that remains constant is that the attitude of the coach is clearly reflected in the attitude of the team.
We've seen this proven many seasons over in our football teams - remember?

How is CMG complacent? He's changed up his substitution patterns since the game at Oxford. If anything, it looks to me that since the game at Oxford CMG has tried different combos to improve the final result. That doesn't seem complacent to me.

Please please please stop comparing basketball now to football under CMS. Nothing about this basketball program is anywhere close to the poor product that CMS trotted on the field. I sincerely believe that CMS's firing has caused some Alabama fans to feel that calling for a coach's job should be the first course of action if they feel any level of disappointment. That seems to be an unfortunate consequence to getting rid of a poor football coach.

if he is seriously saying that he is happy with going 2-12 and winning the west, something is wrong. that is probably the worst mindset i have ever heard. it makes it sound like the ncaa tournament doesn't mean anything. i hope he was just making a joke or something.

He might be trying to motivate the players for Saturday. I know they should already have motivation, but with everyone saying the season is done, he might be trying to give the players some confidence.

I don't know about anyone else...but to me...the title of this thread is pretty dang offensive. I understand your point...don't agree with it...but I understand it...still don't like someone saying our basketball coach is just like Auburns football coach. Mark Gottfried has more class in his little finger than Tommy Tubberville can or will ever be able to comprehend.

Is this everyone's first year of following Bama basketball? This isn't a new phenomenon. With very few exceptions, the team has under performed for the last 9 years. And giving him credit for shaking up the lineup when the season had been steadily going downhill for some time is a bit of rose colored glasses thinking. Things started going south about the time of the Notre Dame game.

I saw this article. It's disturbing that our basketball coach is satisfied with possibly tying for first place (while losing the tiebreakers) in a basketball division full of scrub teams. I think the first poster is comparing Tuberville's SEC West championship claims while losing the tiebreakers with LSU to Gottfried's statements in the article. He was not comparing them in terms of coaching ability, class, etc.

First I think everyone is selling CMG's accomplishments far too short in this thread. Yeah I remember the Wimp years as being great but I also remember the SEC not being nearly as competitive back then (before Ark and USC entered, KY was in trouble w/the NCAA through part of it, UF/UT/LSU were after thoughts) and no offense to Wimp Sanderson but he got fired for essentially assaulting a secretary he had a questionable extramarital relationship with. Can anyone dispute any of these points? Then we move to the Hobbes era where 20 win seasons and NCAA appearences were rare (I'm not going to the record book but if anybody wants to research this abysmal period to discuss why you think I'm wrong I'd listen). So now we have a coach that wins 20 games w/great regularity, makes the NCAA tournament and is 4-3 in the last 3 yrs there and "fans" want to come on here and bash the fact that he states his goal is to win the SECW? I'd be doing flips if Fb won an SECW championship. This sounds like a case of fans that are 1) hypersensitive to everything CMG says and 2) not really looking at the program in a realistic manner. CMG seems like a class act. While I'm not happy with the apparent inability of his teams to consistently win on the road from year to year or this year's apparent collapse, I am happy with the fact that UA seems to matter on the national level now and we are usually in the running for the SECW (a good place to start if you want to win a NC). Threads like this are ridiculous and the comparison between CTT and CMG is a weak attempt to incite raw emotion by the CMG haters.

well said

I think something being missed is that in Basketball as opposed to Football winning the West actually means something. The SEC Tournament seeds the teams based on their standing so winning the West gets a you a bye in the first round of the tournament. So degenerating it is ridiculous. Is it the ultimate goal? No, and I'm sure CMG would agree. It is easy to take quotes and slant them to fit a preconceived notion, but CMG has a proven record and suggestions that he needs to be replaced are flat out wrong in my opinion.

Finally the voice of reason. That was funny:)

what do you consider a proven record?

He has proven he can lose to Kent State and Wisc-Milwaukee when he had a far superior team.:) Listen, I am pulling for us to make the tourney, but sometimes I have to question Gottfried. Does that make me a Gottfried hater? No.....

I agree with you, and apologize for the title. It is more appropriate to say that they both share the same sentiments on what is and is not a championship. I think rings should only be awarded for an overall conference title, or national title. Winning or tying for your division is merely a stepping stone.

Hey, I'm not a CMG "hater". I just think that he has raised our program as far as he is capable, and it's time for a coach who can go even farther. Like a solid SEC record and threat to win every time out. I am sorry I can't settle for mediocrity when I don't have to. But if that's what makes everybody else happy, then I will shut up.

It's sort of like Shula: He was exactly what we needed at the time he was hired. But at the time he was fired, we were ready for something more, and we took action. I think our basketball program is at the same crossroads, and if we take the wrong turn, we'll be mired in the middle for a long time. It's not a slam at CMG. He just doesn't put the killer instinct (or sense of urgency) into our team, and they need it if you've been watching this year.

Roll Tide Roll! Bring on spring.

Sad but true........though some will not admit it.

He's proven he can beat Stanford, Florida and Marquette w/worse teams. The fact that you consistantly post negative things like above while refusing to acknowledge the positive things he's done really leads me to question your objectivity on CMG.
