Re: 2008 Alabama Commitments and Prospects List

Anyone remember who all we had committed at this point last year? It's the offseason and I'm desperate to occupy my brain with useless information.

Chris Lett 5/25/06
Jamar Taylor 6/7/06
Jennings Hester 6/13/06
Alex Watkins 6/18/06
Rolando McClain 6/21/06

I have some useless info to add, especially since he signed with Miami. On May 3rd 2006 WR Jermaine McKenzie committed to Alabama.

Re: 2008 Alabama Commitments and Prospects List

A big time LB to maybe keep an eye on is Lynn Katoa. He's a Rival's 100 member from Salt Lake City Utah who according to Rival's is interested in Alabama. I don't know if he has an offer or not and I'm inclined to think considering the distance that we'd probably be a long-shot to land him, but you never know.

According to Rival's, Joseph Ibiloye has committed to OU.

Re: 2008 Alabama Commitments and Prospects List

Alabama is staying after Ole Miss commit OL Kermit Tyler. I don't list in him the prospects list because he is firmly committed.

A perfect "10" for Kermit Tyler
Kermit Tyler (OG, Marrero, LA) - The L.W. Higgens product had a chance to take in the Ole Miss 3 Day camp.

"The camp went great for me and my brother, Ashton. I had a good time up there. They showed me and my family around. We liked the atmosphere up there."

The 6' 4", 325 offensive lineman had never visited Ole Miss before. What new did he learn about the Rebs?

LB Jordan Futch has committed to Miami according to Rival's.

OT Matt Patchan is no longer interested in Alabama

Well somehow I missed the fact that Matt Patchan has dropped Alabama from his list of favorites. Usually when I come across a Bama prospect with an offer that commits to another school, I just delete them from the list.

Underdog Mentality
Besides the 'Canes, which are just over three hours from his house, Patchan has also already visited Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Florida State. "I was at the Florida spring game and that was great," he said. "They have a real talented team and they are still young, so I like their chances. Coach Urban Meyer has done a great job.

The Crimson Tide is one school on Patchan's long list that he has definitely crossed off. "I visited Alabama too, but that's not the place for me," Patchan said.

I am still optimistic Alabama will land Tyler Love, and one or two of the following:

Antoine McClain
Barrett Jones
Joe Looney

Two or three of those guys to go along with commitment John Michael Boswell, and greyshirt signees William Vlachos, and Patrick Crump and Alabama will be more than alright on the offensive line.

OL Jonathan Owens commits to Georgia
Another day, another class of 2008 star telling Mark Richt he’s coming to Georgia.

The Bulldogs landed commitment No. 14 Friday, from Blountsville (Ala.) Susan Moore High offensive lineman Jonathan Owens.

In other UGA recruiting news …

— Tyler Love, a star lineman from Mountain Brook, Ala., said he plans another visit to Athens soon. He plans to spend this weekend at Florida.

Yeah, if we manage to get both Love and McClain we would be talking about a top 5 O-Line class. I'm not too sure about McClain, though, he's played it very close to the vest.

Re: 2008 Alabama Commitments and Prospects List (Updated)

Alabama has offered RB Covaughn Deboskie.

Young and Hip
Covaughn Deboskie, ranked No. 22 in the Southwest by Scout.com, said he favors Cal slightly over Stanford, Arizona State, Florida, Georgia Tech and Michigan. "I like Cal a lot," he said. "I like that they are upgrading their stadium and they have a really good offensive line core that is coming up. They also have good coaches that are great people..."

Covaughn Deboskie, the 5-foot-11, 185-pound four-star running back from Hamilton High School in Chandler, Ariz., has 19 scholarship offers, with his latest coming from Alabama, California and Mississippi State.

Re: 2008 Alabama Commitments and Prospects List (Updated)

RB Dontavius Jackson lists Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Penn State and Georgia as his five finalists. He says he does not have a favorite and he expects to make his decision by September or October. From reading his comments it looks like his top three are Georgia, Alabama and Clemson.

Re: 2008 Alabama Commitments and Prospects List (Updated)

108,000 huh? Maybe sometime in the not so distant future, but I wonder where he got that impression from? Maybe from A-day when we had what seemed to be 108,000!

I read that too, I was thinking it could be an estimate of how many people would have attended the A-Day if they had not turned them away. :eek2:

Re: 2008 Alabama Commitments and Prospects List (Updated)

This is going to be a very interesting year in recruiting, there are virtually no positions anywhere on our team where a "5 star" recruit couldn't reasonably expect to come in an play immedately (with the possible exception of QB), you can't say that about any other major program in the country, add to the fact that Coach Saban has a national reputation and kids around the country that aren't necessarily Alabama fans will concider coming here because of Saban, Reading back on the days of Bear Bryant, so many now legendary players came to Alabama just for the challenge of playing for the Bear, We haven't had that since he died, I believe Saban is someone who provides such a challenge as to attract those kinds of players "consistently" to Tuscaloosa for the first time in a generation.

Re: 2008 Alabama Commitments and Prospects List (Updated)

I see where the top OT from my homestate, KY, is coming to camp at Alabama on July 23rd, according to local paper. Ryan Benzick, 6'6", 330 lb, from Fern Creek HS is also listed on AL prospect list. Read the article on Scout.com about this kid, how his coaches were fired last November and the new ones just started in June. The kid was off the recruiting radar, no video, no camps, no spring practice, until the article came out. Now he has gotten real hot. Timed at two camps at 5.08 & 5.1. Owns school record in squat at 635 and benches 375. Good student, good ACT, and is eligible. He just got named by the Ky High School Coaches Assoc. to their "Tremendous 26" and Kentucky Sports Radio named him to their "Top Ten Ky Prospects". Hope he does well down there as he loves the SEC. I saw him at Louisville's camp two weeks ago and he was dominant.
