How the West Can Be Won

Bama has two-three early season hurdles that will make or break their chances at winning the west: Vandy - Arkansas - Georgia. While all of these are winnable, certainly they can also be losses. I like our chances at Vandy because we are offensively more potent than the Commodores. Arkansas seems to be weakest early in the season. I think we can beat Georgia if we can get a lead and make the crowd work in our favor. This could make us undefeated heading to Jacksonville for a non-conference bout.

If we can shut down the Mississpi duo, we will then have Tennessee coming in with hopefully several losses and a bit down. Winning this one would bring an LSU team in with 1-2 losses, hopefully and then at AU with them possibly being out of the race for the west. Now, excuse me I have to remove my crimson shades.

numbersman,

I agree with a lot of what you say - the turn this season, as most years, comes the Arky game. If we win that one I believe we at worst split the UGA/FSU games. After that I really like our chances against UT. From there on out it leaves us with two teams, LSU and Auburn.

I am as big a fan as anyone else but it will suprise me if we can beat LSU. But all along I have been saying that this is the year we end the streak, in JHS..

Does that win us the West or not? That largely depends on how other teams do against one another and their respective schedules. All I know is that this team will finish the season stronger than it began, rather than what we've seen lately.

I think we beat Vandy and Ark, but do not see us beating UGA. Their offensive line will be their biggest hurdle this season, and I believe that they have a bye week before they play us. FSU and AU are beatable, not marking those in the win column however. I think UT and LSU are the two toughest opponents on our schedule and do not expect to win those games. That would put us at 8-4 in my opinion, losing the UGA, UT, LSU, and either AU or UT).

I too agree that the Arkansas game is pivotal to the outcome of our season as it has been for several years. Assuming we are 3-0 when UGA comes to BD I think we have a good shot at the Dawgs and the Noles, but realistically I think at best we are 4-1 at the end of September. IMO we have a better chance at knocking off either UT or AU than we do against LSU and we should not overlook Houston, they were Conference USA champs last year and IMO will give us all we want at homecoming. If we have a chance to win the West we will need some help from AU, UF, USC (I think they play this year) against LSU.

I try to balance optimism and realism as best I can. I expect to see a much better team this fall, but not one good enough to beat LSU. This team will be touch-n-go for the first several games. Don't expect to see a nuclear pounding being put to anyone the first half of the season.

The Barn is an injury or two away from being in a very tough position this season. Since we get them last I think it will be interesting to see how perceptions of Auburn are shaping up when we are 5 to 6 weeks into the season.

The only thing I'd like to see MORE than us beating an 11-0 AU is to see us beat an 0-11 AU.

I think the season could go any way imaginable but Its gonig to be interesting to see how the September record goes, With so many first time starters on Defense We could easily drop Vandy, Arkansas, and Georgia, or any combination there of (I'm ignoring the non conference FL State Game)

If we come out of September and we are healthy, AND the rookie defensive players are making good progress there is a chance we could have a better than expected year, But winning the west sounds like a major stretch unless LSU and Auburn both drop some games they don't plan to.

One thing to note, Les Miles has run his yap so much that he HAS to win the Bama game now, if he doesn't I doubt he'd survive at LSU, As it stands he should have no problem, LSU has way more talent, but talent doesn't always = win the game. I'm amazed how stupid he has been with his pie hole this offseason. Saban has clearly gotten into his head. (which was probably by design)

Les Miles is under ZERO pressure at LSU and will survive as long as he keeps winning . . . just like every coach in America.

Having lived in Louisiana all my 40 years except the last 6 months, I would have to disagree with you about CLM being under zero pressure. He might not have any added pressure by his comments but he definitely has pressure. If he doesn't win the SEC and play for the MNC this year after all the hype he will really be feeling the pressure. Just check your own board.;)

My board is Tigerforums.com and I know it pretty well. I'm not aware of any thread that suggests that Miles must win the SEC and play for the MNC this year or risk being fired. We're fairly realistic over here with most folks not expecting an undefeated season. We're very confident about this team, but nobody is invincible in the SEC.

LSU has finished with 11 wins, a bowl game blowout win, and a top-5 finish in each of the last two seasons and still hasn't won a SEC title. But last years #3 national finish is definitely being competitive for the national championship. No coach has ever been fired with a record like that, amigo.

Just asking, but wasn't Frank Solich fired after leading the Cornhuskers to the NC game against Miami? He had some real good teams before he got fired.

Personally, as much as Miles has run his mouth, I think that he's in too good of a situation to worry about his job. Now, if he continues his recruiting successes but continues to underachieve for several more years and no championship titles to show for it (SEC or NC), then I think he'll for sure be on the hot seat.

And just how much has Miles "run his mouth"? I remember a few comments here and there, mainly to fire up the Tiger faithful. But for the most part it has been harmless banter. Why do so many insist on making a lot out of a few harmless comments made by an LSU coach?

Good point. I may be in the minority on here but I do not have anything against Coach Miles. He was fortunate to inherit a great deal of talent following CNS and based on his first 3 recruiting classes the talent is still coming in. IMO LSU is in the drivers seat in the SEC West and could make a run at the MNC game this year, but if they don't I do not see Coach Miles on the hot seat. I do think Coach Miles regrets that his comments were picked up by the media at the recruiting celebration for LSU fans. He may be somewhat defensive about CNS being at Alabama, but he and the LSU fans can accept it and move on. The Alabama-LSU rivalry has been a good one and I hope we put this behind us and move forward.

True. LSU has a long tradition of firing coaches that can't maintain a winning percentage of over 85%. At 22-4 I'm surprised he's still around. If Miles loses at all or wins a game next season by less than 3 touchdowns, I expect him to be gone the following Sunday morning. :rolleye2:

I think you could argue our hiring of Saban has crystallized LSU fans behind Miles.

Hmmm... Maybe the same reasons so many insist on making a lot out of a few harmless comments made by a Bama coach?
