I'm a little worried about the growing attention Hoover is getting about allegations regarding its sports program. A former Federal Judge has been hired to lead an investigation.

Does not sound good. One of our recruits haS been mentioned. Something about possible grade changes.

(Sorry, I have not learned how to post a link, or my browser won't let me).

Thanks for helping out a lazy fellow-Tider , BLL . Our local news had a story on it but , LCN was far too busy frying chicken to open his ears .

WOuldn't worry too much about it. Any team that has a long-term period of success is bound to come under some scrutiny. If there had been multiple players from separate schools then it might be our problem, but at this moment it seems to be Hoover's problem ;).

Confused about what happened, Quattlebaum said he spoke with the school's registrar's office and was shown a May 30 letter from a staff member instructing the player's grade be changed from an 89.5 to a 90 in the system. The last day for Hoover teachers was May 25.

...

Hoover Principal Richard Bishop said he was unaware of Quattlebaum's allegation and will investigate. He said there was a glitch in the school's computer grading system, STI, in which grades were not being properly rounded up.

Quattlebaum said he rechecked all of his students' grades and found four other students - all of whom are juniors - who were one point away from a higher final grade, including one girl who also had an 89.0. None of those students' grades were bumped up, he said.

Is it me or is the concept of rounding lost on on the writers of this article and quite possibly Quattlebaum?

The only recruit I can think of that we got from Hoover with grade problems never got in school (Jeramie Holifield).

Kerry Murphy is one who might be in question. We also got Josh Chapman and Patrick Crump but neither of those have any grade problems.

Yeah, I keep hearing Murphy's names mentioned by the aubs in their big conspiracy theory on this issue. From what I have read it sounds like whoever the kid was needed this one grade change to be elligible for college ball. I thought Murphy would have needed a lot more than one class to meet requirements, so I don't understand how he would fit in this schenario. Of course I have also heard Chapman mentioned by the aubs, until they realized that he wasn't borderline on grades so they quickly dropped that line of thought.

Re-read the article. What is being said is this:

Forrest Quattlebaum, a Hoover teacher for 11 years, said two Hoover High School staff members told him June 12 that one of his student's grades had been incorrectly rounded down to a B in the school's computer grading system. They said the error jeopardized the student's eligibility to play college football, according to Quattlebaum, who would not name the student or the university.

The two staff members said the football player had earned an 89.5, which should have been rounded up to 90 - an A - in the computer system, according to Quattlebaum.

A. The teacher is being told by external entities that he made a mistake in his grading.

But Quattlebaum said when he rechecked his gradebook, he computed that the student earned 89.0 for the year. An 89.0 - a B - would not have been eligible for rounding up.

B. The teacher re-checked his figures and found that his numbers were correct and that the student in question did NOT earn an 89.5.

Confused about what happened, Quattlebaum said he spoke with the school's registrar's office and was shown a May 30 letter from a staff member instructing the player's grade be changed from an 89.5 to a 90 in the system. The last day for Hoover teachers was May 25.

C. The grade was changed by someone other than the teacher and appears to have been initiated after the official school term for teachers, giving some appearance of impropriety.

Quattlebaum said he rechecked all of his students' grades and found four other students - all of whom are juniors - who were one point away from a higher final grade, including one girl who also had an 89.0. None of those students' grades were bumped up, he said.

Quattlebaum said if he had known the situation ahead of time, he could have provided all students with an opportunity to improve their grades.

"It makes me look like I rounded a grade for a football player and did not round a grade for just your average student," Quattlebaum said. "The girl in my class who also had an 89 would be really upset to learn she didn't get a 90 and somebody else did."

If an 89.0 now rounds to a 90, then it appears at least 4 other students deserve to have their grades changed as well. Are there any "Hoover staff members" providing advocacy for them?

So if Chapman and Crump are good, and Kerry Murphy wasn't going to qualify anyways, what recruit of ours supposedly had their grade changed 1/2 a point? And what player needed the English bump anyways?

I do believe Murphy was attempting to take at least 1, and maybe 2 English classes this summer.

Who's to say it isn't Pugh, the Auburn signee from Hoover.

Quattlebaum doesn't teach Pugh. I think he only teaches 1 of the 3 of the 'bama signees.

I think the issue is with the Hoover Board. If Forest doesn't know who to trust....then to me this isn't a 'bama issue...it's a Hoover School Board issue.
