Bulletin Board Spelling......

Some seemingly ignorant errors are just the result of hurried typing. I look back occasionally and see I've made a real boner. I, and the other mods, don't usually correct spelling errors and the like made in the body of a post. OTOH, if I see a thread title with an embarrassing spelling or grammar error, then I do correct it and so do the others. The reason is that many viewers, particularly guests, never get past the first page and glaring errors don't make us look good. Now, we had one former mod who consistently spelled "grammar" as "grammer." And his mom WAS an English teacher. That creates a ticklish situation... :D And, since we're on pet peeves, there is no such English construction as "have went." It's "have gone." Also, there isn't any "have ran." It's "have run." Glad to get that off my chest... :D

I always love it when someone jumps on a message board correcting the masses, while doing the same thing.

Earlier today, you said:

It seems to me that an educated fellow like yourself would know that when the word “its” is used, it is correct only as a possessive. We all know "it's" is correct only when it is used as a contraction meaning “it is.”

Mr. Pot, I'd like you to meet my good friend Mr. Kettle!

Wow, I guess you showed me!! Because forgetting to type an " ' " is really the same as saying "I hope Auburn looses".......I agree......thank you for setting me straight! I never said I didn't make mistakes......I just get frustrated having to read obvious ignorant errors that are repeated.....as opposed to typos.......

I'll make a post since we're on this subject. This regards words and phrases and the meaning they have (or used to have as opposed to the meaning they have today). I won't high light or make a big arrow but, there is one phrase here that has a totally different meaning today than it did in days gone by. Would definitely get the freshmen and sophomores giggling. ;) Of course, I work with an old navy man and its hard to say much of anything around him without it being taken towards the gutter more often than not. It is really quite disturbing sometimes.

I won't say that I don't make mistakes either. I'm sure everyone has a few things that bother them that are constantly appearing on the board and I am no different. The their, they're, and there thing is one. The constant spelling of offense as offence or defense as defence is another. Regular typos or errors don't bother me as much. I make them myself. It usually directly corresponds with how bright the room is because I never took typing so sometimes I'm looking at the keyboard rather than the screen. By the way. the spell checker didn't catch offence and defence so is there another accepted spelling or are these entirely separate words?

I do have to ask one question. What is the deal with people who spell color - colour? Is that a spelling from Britain or some other English speaking country. There are other words that are spelled the same way but I can't think of the rest. It always seems the people that do it always highly regard themselves. Just something that I've often wondered about.:p_conf:

LOL!! I'm just messing with ya! I guarantee if you go back a few posts in my history, you will see glaring examples of bad grammar!;)

Well, I looked back and you are correct. Everything I looked at was spelled correctly but you left out one word on this post. You probably wouldn't have to look back as far to find a flub on one of my posts.

Awesome! I would to see Kenneth reach the potential we know he has. He may very well do it if Gruden doesn't run him between the center and guard 30 times a game.

That are one of the things that disturbs me also.

Thanks. I just got back on and was re-reading through the thread and noticed my error. Unlike some on here, I appreciate it when people point out my errors--even when it was only a mistake and not an error due to lack of knowledge. Normally, upon discovering I've made a mistake, I go back and correct it myself; however, since you've already corrected me, I'll just leave it.

The only time it really bothers me is when people seemingly don't even try. That irks me. It's easy enough to make a few mistakes here and there, but to make a mistake in virtually every sentence (or sentence fragment in many cases) is not trying in my book and it only makes the person look bad IMO.

It is the difference in British vs. American spelling. I find myself doing it most often after reading C.S. Lewis.

More examples

Similarly, most people pick up their habits of spelling and sentence construction from what they read. If the majority of their reading material is rags like the Birmingham News, then they're more likely to make the same mistakes as the ill-spoken "writers" filling that broadsheet.

Oh ok. Thanks. That explains the 'offence' and 'defence' as well I guess.

Actually, there ain't no 'scuse fer that. Them Englishters can't tell no football from a soccer ball, so they wouldn't have no clue what offense and defense was, much less how to spell it. :)

Today we salute you, Mr. Grammar School Valedictorian.

You, bastion of grammar correctness, take to the soap box, projecting your mastery of the English language.

Yes indeed you're smart, smart enough to know that no one can reach your level of omniscience and condescension.

It takes arrogance to what you do, master of the lingo, but it takes even more arrogance to post it online.

So, keep posting your self-righteous superiority, and we'll keep being reminded that there is indeed an overabundance of self-promoting intellects out there.

Thank you!!!!!
