why not charge a couple dollars and use the money for disaster relief (in state or at least the USA) or military families in need?

If you feel the need to donate- There are many good organizations that you may donate to at anytime. You do not have to have a game to donate money to a fine situation that you listed.
 
A-Day is a chance for those people who can't afford to come to a game during the regular season and enjoy a game like atmosphere, to charge for A-Day would ruin that for a lot of people.

I disagree. That's not the purpose of A-Day and frankly its a great opportunity for the university to raise some money for a worthy cause. I am not suggesting a 20 or 30 dollar entry fee but maybe a $5 donation for each adult (kids free) to go to the General Scholarship Fund at the university. That would raise somewhere between $250-300K in funds, meaning that dozens of in-state kids could get a college education each year that they would normally not be able to have.
 
I think the university is doing right not charging anything. Like mentioned, some folks cannot pay to see a regular season game. Everything is not about money all the time. It is already close to getting where the average person cannot go to a game. Raise money somewhere else and let the average Bama fan enjoy a day at BDS without having to sacrifice part of their budget.
 
What about providing those who wish to donate, to which ever cause the university wishes to support, a wrist band that allows early entrance into BDS. They can set up a both in the quad to take donations and hand out wrist bands,then provide the donors a 30 min head start at the gate.
 
I would rather there be no charge for A-day so as to truly encourage a packed out full house BDS experience (a new tradition) open to any fan (especially those that might not be able to attend a regular season game for whatever reason).

Having said that, if there is a charge then I want it to go to an extremely worthy cause.
 
if there was a charge say to go to a charity then someone who would not like that charity for some reason and then there would be a big fuss over that.you can't make everyone happy no matter what
 
If money is involved, you are not going to make everyone happy because someone is going to be left out. If it is free, everyone has the same opportunity. You do not get there early enough to get a seat, then tough luck but you leave it up to personal choice. I am not against taking up money for a worthy cause. The best way for taking up money for whatever cause is to make it voluntary. You give if you feel led, if not, you do not get penalized.
 
I think we should all remember A-day is a practice, not a game. It gives the public a look at what the team has accomplished during spring practice, and I personally would not buy a ticket to watch a practice. I would make a donation if a charity I deemed worthy were collecting, but only if it was completely voluntary.
 
Collect a dollar per head and give some needy kid a full ride to the school. Call it the A Day Scholarship. Can't afford a dollar per person, don't need to be there. JMHO
 
Each year the University takes a small amount from every student's activity fee to provide "free" daily NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY newspapers which are available around campus. In my opinion this is completely unfair to those who don't read either paper or don't agree with their editorial opinions. The same would be true if money collected for A DAY were taken from 92,000 fans for a designated charity. Some would have preferred that money be donated elsewhere. Let each individual distribute their money as they choose. If you want to provide scholarship money (certainly a worthy cause), you can contact your local alumni chapter and they can show you how to get the National Alumni Association to match donated funds for endowed scholarships.

With the cost of season tickets expected to be increased in the coming years, in my opinion it is important that everyone have an equal opportunity to attend A DAY game without financial considerations. The thought of a child not being able to see the inside of BDS because Daddy didn't have the small amount to take the family to A DAY, is just too unpleasant to consider.

That's exactly how I feel. I remember being able to go to games as a child and I know that helped shape me as the great Bama fan I am today. It really makes me sad at how many fathers are unable to take their sons to see the Tide play now because of the huge financial commitment required. It's no one's fault really, it's just that Alabama football is in high demand now and the ones who get left out are usually some of the most passionate fans. A-Day provides these families with a chance to go inside of BDS and gives these kids a more tangible dream of one day playing football for the Crimson Tide. I didn't have tickets to the games this past season but I was ok with that because I am now a professional tailgater...but for the families that can't afford to take the whole clan to Tuscaloosa in the fall, A-Day is a time they can do that. Yes, college athletics is a business, but let's not forget reason we love Alabama football so much...and no it's not because we like to pay.
