Shaun Alexander cut by Seahawks

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

i dont think hes ready to retire so i imagine he'll end up where all the old timers go. the raiders. i bet hes got a couple of serviceable years left.

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

Good. I don't have to pull for the Seahawks anymore.

You beat me to it. I don't like the Seahawks and I don't like Holmgren. I pulled for them because I like Shaun and that's it. I kinda like the QB out there and Tatupu is cool, but other than that, I don't like them at all.

Now, I'm a Titans fan and a Cowboys fan, so either one would be GREAT for me. I don't think he's a good fit for the Raiders though. That whole Christian thing is probably a turn-off for the Silver and Black. You know, morals and what not....

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

This is a really nice article about Shaun and what he did for the Seahawks that was written by Steve Kelley of the Seattle Times back in March. If you have a few minutes, give it a read....

The Seattle Times March 10, 2008

Don't let Shaun Alexander fade without fanfare....

Shaun Alexander, the most productive running back in franchise history, probably has scored his last touchdown as a Seattle Seahawk.

After a Pro Bowl career, after eight seasons in Seattle, after averaging more than 1,500 yards rushing over a five-year span, Alexander probably will be released.

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

I saw Shaun and some other huge white dude jogging together last week on the UA track while we were having track practice. Several of the guys did double takes to make sure that it was him.

Always thought he was a good RB but never rooted for him or the Seahawks whenever they went against my 49ers.

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

Because he got stuck in Seattle, the media machine (primarily in the east) almost ignored Sean. If he had been playing for any decent team east of the Mississippi river, Sean would have been more of a household name.
I always had respect for the man because he stood up for decency and set a great example for young people.
His years at Alabama were as good as it gets. He literally carried the team for a couple of those Dubose years.

I'm sure the reason you mention was certainly a contributing factor to my not having seen him play in the NFL; however, there are other reasons.

First, I am not an NFL fan and rarely watch an NFL game before December in any given season. Second, as I alluded in my previous post, unlike most Bama fans, I am not enamored with Shaun Alexander. As I said, he is extremely gifted and I'm glad he played for--not against--Bama. However, I am not a fan. Due to board rules and what "Momma always said," I won't say anything further on here.

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

Shaun Alexander to the Raiders? Doubt that. Raiders will be trying their damnedest to pick up this new guy by the name of Darren McFadden. You might have heard of him.

Alexander might go elsewhere, and I hope he does. He has something that someone like McFadden doesn't - the character of a role model.

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

Talk about a tough business (NFL) to be in.....

I wonder if, when a couple of years when Shawn held out on his contract, it put a "bad taste" in the coaches'/owner's mouths.

I am truly shocked.

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

The day Steve Hutchinson signed with the Vikings I knew it was downhill for Shaun. Notice how Minnesota's rushing game has improved dramatically over the past couple of years. It's no accident. Seattle never got anyone else that good to block for him. He might do well in Washington running behind Chris Samuels again.

Oh yeah, and I like just about everything about the state of Tennessee except UT and the entire city of Memphis. The Smokies are beautiful and I still have fond memories of family vacations in Gatlinburg.

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

That is exactly what I was thinking.

I agree...I just could not get into the Seahawks...For several reasons...

#1 They are on the other side of the country...
#2 They rarely were on tv in Alabama...
#3 They really don't have a history as a franchise...Yeah, we all know about the glory days with Dave Krieg & Steve Largent...LOL...
#4 I personally don't like there uniforms...They changed them in 2002, & I think they went from terrible to horrible...
#5 The NFL doesn't care about them as a franchise...Do you think the NFL would tell San Fran, Dallas or Green Bay..."Ummm, we are going to move you to AFC"???...As, they moved the Seahawks to the NFC...

LOL, getting off my tirade now....

Good. I don't have to pull for the Seahawks anymore.

I never felt obligated to pull for them anyway. I have 1 NFL team. Dallas! Just like I have 1 college team. Bama!

I like Shaun and wish him well just as I do any Bama player that gets drafted. But I don't pull for NFL teams just because they have former Tide players. Unless of course that team is Dallas.

Re: S. Alexander to be cut today

In all fairness, I know many people who absolutely refused to drink Jack Daniels on gamedays because of its Tennessee heritage. And that long predates all of the recent NCAA / Fulmer / Means drama. I knew a lot of people that would drink Jim Beam or Crown Royal on gamedays for that very reason.

With a 'Bama grad now master distiller in Lynchburg, I imagine that will change, but nevertheless it was an issue for along period of time.

Never has been an issue with me. ;)

Alexander cut by Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks released former UA player Shaun Alexander, just 26 months after he signed a $62 million contract as the franchise's cornerstone.

Seahawks president Tim Ruskell said Tuesday the team released the former Alabama star unconditionally hours after the running back passed a physical. It's been a rapid fall for the 30-year-old. When he signed that mammoth deal, he was coming off an MVP season in 2005 and a Super Bowl appearance. Now he's looking for work, coming off of two unimpressive and injury-filled seasons.

The NFL told the Pittsburgh Steelers that very thing when the AFL/NFL merger happened. The Steelers were a stalwart NFL franchise that was proposed to go into the new AFC. They went kicking and screaming until they found out they'd be in a division with Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Houston - thus producing some pretty good rivalries.

Point taken... :-) But, they have a record of being shifting around...

1977 Seahawks shifted from the NFC West to the AFC West
2002: The Seahawks finally opened their state of the art stadium, moving back to the NFC West where they played their inaugural season in 1976, as part of the NFL's realignment.

I guess they are back home now in the NFC West...

Thank you Bama Law for admitting that, cause until I read that I thought I was the only Bama fan who was never enamored with S Alexander as a collegian or professional and now that I have said that I can admit, I feel exactly the same way about B. Croyle. I am not an NFL fan and living near Nashville makes me dislike the NFL and the Titans even more.

One benefit to Shaun playing in Tennessee is the fact that when he scores a touchdown they play Sweet Home Alabama. Salt meet wound!

Seriously though, Shaun hasn't helped his case much in the last two years. I know there are injuries to take into account but his production has been awful when he's healthy. Couple that with his sometimes combative and contrary attitude towards Mike Holmgren and anyone could see the writing on the wall.

Someone will probably pick him up, but Shaun has never been a player who likes to practice or that dedicated to a fitness regimen. This has caught up to him recently and I don't see it changing. He will be a situational back for the remainder of his career. Maybe he will end up somewhere with a coach that can light a fire under his ..., but I don't see it happening.

I wish him the best but...
