Re: Perkins or Currry

Perkins!!!! He knew how to coach, he just couldn't handle the job at Bama. He won some big games, just couldn't keep the team consistent. Players liked him. I guess he just came in after the Bear. I like Ray. Curry came across as a professor to me. Not the true leader of the team. Just like when he announces games. He is constantly analysing and talking in riddles. I could just imagine him in the locker room. I like Ray.

Re: Perkins or Currry

Honestly, I was never impressed with either. Both were fine recruiters, but neither were able to pull a team together and get the most out of its individual abilities.

Our 1984 team was not great, but there is no way it should have been 5-6. And as much talent, depth, and experience as we had in 1985 and 1986, it was ridiculous that we weren't winning the conference and playing in major bowl games.

Curry did really well on the recruiting trails, but much like with Perkins it never came together for him on the field. I can guarantee you that we would have never won a national championship with him in 1992, had he stayed. He did leave a slew of talent behind though, and it was the core of his last two recruiting classes -- sans a couple of additions by Stallings; Palmer and Langham, most notably -- that propelled us to a 24-1 combined record in 1991 and 1992.

Agreed, but if Curry was in over his head, then how would you honestly characterize Mike Shula?
Shula was definitely over his head, but he was also:

1) An honest face for our program at a time when it was sorely needed.

2) Available and willing to take over a team AFTER spring practice that would have to forget all they had just learned offensive-wise and start from scratch during fall practice.

3) Too stubbornly loyal to his coaching staff, which played a part in his eventual fate with the team.

4) Too much of a buddy to his players and not enough of a disciplinarian.

5) Still a better choice than Sylvester Croom would have been, which pretty much completed the short list of coaches that Moore had to choose from.

He's also still one of my favorite players from his playing days at the Capstone. I'm sure it hurt him to be let go, but I bet he understood Mal Moore's decision. I hope that someday he'll feel welcome again on the campus.

I hate the way his daddy acted after he was let go. Don could learn a lot from his son in that respect.

Re: Perkins or Currry

Curry was not a good recruiter, he was an average recruiter and an average Coach. I was in TTown back then and I can tell you Perkins was a real good recruiter. The yer he left for Tampa Bay, he was headed to having a top 3 recruiting class. Once he left Curry could not keep up with the recruiting game at all. Curry signed 1 QB in 3 years for example..remember who? Ray Stanton form NY and never played a second. Perkins signed Sutton, Newberry, Ray, Dunn and Hollingsworth (all but Hollingsworth were rated the top 5 QBs in there class). Qb's is an example. Coach Stallings had to scratch for QBs when he arrived because Curry had not signed any and didnt have any committed (Jay Barker was not on Curry's radar). So to me Curry could not recruit, was an average field coach as well. Perkins was a real good recruiter (the best recruiter before Saban) and was an average field coach. Both are jerks though. SO the answer is Perkins would rate by me the better of the 2. The order of the Bama coaches in my lifetime in my Opinion:

1)Coach Bryant (No Brainer)
2)Coach Stallings (No Brainer)
3)Coach Saban (Still a work in progress)
4)Coach Perkins
5)Coach Fran
5)Coach Shula (Took the training wheels off)
6)Coach Curry (Toss up really between Shula and Curry)
7)Coach Dubose

I agree with Tommy on this one, Perkins no doubt. I always felt that Curry perceived himself to be the professorial type, worried about how he articulated himself and his image in the eyes of his peers and the media. Part of his image was that he wanted to be perceived to be a more sophisticated, intellectual,
type coach unlike the Pat Dye's of the world, but he also wanted to be perceived as still being a winner and a leader that is why, IMO he needed Alabama. If he could win at Alabama then it somehow validated his career and put him on a larger stage, but not with the image of Pat Dye or Barry Switzer whose careers and programs were tainted. Not sure if this makes sense or not just my opinion.

#5, what do you base your contention on? History has already proven that Sly is much better than Shula, whether it be as a CFB HC or as an OC in the NFL.

I think that Curry might be one of the more underrated coaches that we have had. If college football had instant replay in 1989, Bill Curry would have led Alabama to a national championship. Plus he recruited some of the players that led us to the 1992 title. As an columnist he definitely had some thoughts that were "out there", but as a coach and evaluator of talent he was pretty solid.

Re: Perkins or Currry

Perkins was head and shoulders a better recruiter and coach than Curry. Curry was way over his head at Bama.
Bill Curry could chew Perkins up and spit him out as a coach and recruiter.
Perkins 5-6 team was one of the most talented teams ever assembled at Bama.
Curry's 26-8 record for his three years is THE best first three year record of any coach in Alabama history including this guy named Bryant.
He recruited 90% of the seniors on the 92 National Championship Team.
He was smart enough to hire coaches like Homer Smith. Remember the 49 straight points we scored against Ole Miss??? When was the last time any offense we've had did anything similar to that?
I personally think Curry was a very under rated coach.
Perkins tore the tower down. That's my most vivid memory of him.

I could not disagree with you more...Coach Perkins loved UA and CPB and was not intimidated at following him...Curry was so intimidated with Bryant's shadow that he tried to fabricate a connection with him (note the photo of CPB in the background during some of Curry's TV shows). As far as Perkins taking down the tower...he's explained that several times over...it was going to be taken the the College Football Hall of Fame, but Perkins changed his mind when he saw the HOF and opted to bring it back to Tuscaloosa...Curry put it back up, but there were plans to do that anyway, to honor CPB. As far as the '84 team...we had some good players, but we also had some injuries and several young players either starting for the first time, or still getting used to starting. As well as some horrible luck along the way. But I'd rate it only an average team in terms of sheer talent. And I'm probably being a bit kind there.
