Coach Saban on Les Miles: "He's won more games than I would've if I had stayed."

Pretty classy statement in my book. Miles has been pretty straight-laced this week, too. And that's how it should be.

I really think the whole Saban-hate thing Saturday is going to turn out to be a dud. There'll be a bunch of signs on ESPN Gameday and Coach Saban will get roundly booed on his first appearance ... then that will be about it.

"I like Les Miles. Now, Les may not like me. I don't know. But I don't know why anyone (at LSU) would be upset. He's won more games than I would've if I had stayed. He's won more than I did when I was there."

I don't know if I'd put "classy" and "Miles" in the same statement. A Huntsville Times article this morning was focused on how he's going out of his way to not mention Coach Saban's name....calling him "the coach at Alabama." Just seems like another one of his intentional games he plays with the media. Remember "ArKansas?" Maybe someone can link the article.

LSU fans are probably dumbfounded by that statement....

I'm actually not surprised Saban would say that, and I think it was pretty classy of him. After Tuesday, I think we all kinda feel like we have more in common with folks from Alabama than we did before.

Bama is still an SEC school, and there may be rivalry banter, but that's about it. I can't say I agree for sure that Les would have won more, but since he has won so much, it's hard to disagree. I think LSU would have been very good either way.

If LSU loses only to UF, UGA, and Bama, that still is not a bad year. That's a current #1, a preseason #1, and possibly the final #1. I still gotta feel good about beating bama on Saturday. If not, I'm a worthless fan.

I agree that the statement reflects Coach Saban taking the "high road".

I agree. Every team that runs onto the field at Tiger Stadium gets booed. The higher the ranking, the bigger the boo. Bama ranked #1 would be booed pretty damned loudly, no matter who was coach.

That's just a Les-ism. He often refers to "the other coach", "the other team" and "our opponent". Someone at Florida got upset that Les always referred to Florida as "our next opponent". The "R-Kansas" comment last year is an example of why he goes generic, probably.

This is just my opinion and I mean no disrespect to LSU fans by saying it, but I think a lot of Les Miles' success can be attributed to Coach Saban's excellent recruiting there. He had the team stocked with top players and more wanting to come aboard. The level of talent was good enough to overcome the level of the coaching. LSU's problem this season is mostly due to Miles being forced to kick that thug quarterback off the team last summer.

Sure Nick recruited well at LSU but I believe the most important thing Nick left behind was a winning attitude.

Let's not forget one other thing.. Les Miles is a damned fine coach. I would take him any day over Urban Meyers.

Miles is working the skill players to virtual perfection, and bringing in more. You can bet that coaches like Phil and Tubbs stay up late trying to figure it out.

True, but it's also worth noting that Les has recruited exceptionally well at LSU. While Les may give us plenty of reasons to poke fun, the reality is he has done well at LSU - there's no denying that.

I certainly agree with that! He's building a winning attitude here as well. He's such a great teacher!

Les has also been very lucky. How many teams have gotten to play for the MNC after losing 2 games and 1 of them was the last regular season game of the season? NONE before LSU.

I think Miles takes a lot of chances on 4th downs and eventually that catches up with you. He is ok but I think Saban got the momentum started at LSU and if Miles doesn't coach them up in the next couple of years, that momentum could start to fade.

Re: Coach Saban on Les Miles: "He's won more games than I would've if I had stayed."

There's no way to prove it, but I don't think Saban believes a word of what he said. It was a classy thing to do, and it disarms a lot of the Saban vs. LSU hype, but it borders on ridiculous.

The truth is that Saban was just beginning to reap the rewards of his Process when he left LSU. Had he stayed, he could have easily matched or bettered Miles' record, and would probably have the program in better shape than it is now.

Miles is a second-tier coach who could never have built the program that Saban did. Miles is one of many coaches that could have taken that program over and kept it on track. That momentum is slowly dying, though, and I think LSU will be back to earth within 3-4 years: a solid program that is fighting for it's life among the SEC West. Saban and Petrino will beat Miles enough to expose him, and I'd bet anything that Miles is gone in 5 years.

I think you touch on perhaps the biggest difference in this season and the last few. Attitude to do whatever it takes to win in the off season, practice time, and games. We certainly saw that players under our former coach learned to accept losing too easily. That is why we lost so many close games. WE are seeing that turn around under CNS.

BTW, that "left over winning attitude" at LSU was never more apparent last year in the last 6 minutes of the LSU-Bama game when they fell behind and found a way to pull out a victory. I remember commenting then that LSU won that game the way Bama use to win games by imposing their will to win on a team that had outplayed them.

If that is true, then I mean no disrespect when I say that Les went 11-2, 11-2, and 12-2 with the team that Nick went 9-3 with.

It was the right thing to say at the right time.

Les is a good coach, and everyone knows it. The only occasional debate is whether or not he is a great coach, and whether or not LSU should keep him around to find out. This year doesn't settle the question. As was pointed out, losing three games in a year doesn't mean that your coach is suddenly spastic. Next year will help or hurt CLM's staus with LSU fans more than this one.

Personally I would like to see him stick around. He and Nutt are kind of like a couple of screwball uncles at a family reunion.

That is comparing apples and oranges. First of all, the Miles team is a year older and stronger and moire expierenced. Secondly, the teams that Saban played lost players that were not on the teams that MIles faced. Can't compare.

The real question is how did Miles lose two games last year with that team?
