Who's watching the World Cup?

Yeah, just cannot do it. I think mostly because ties are acceptable in the sport.

I got into it briefly in the late 90s/early 00s when I got DirectTV for the 1st time and had access to Sports channels that covered it.

Arsenal was the best club at that point so I jumped on that bandwagon so I was at least trying to follow a good team.

It’s sort of like Ice Hockey on grass but not as physical imo.

It can be exciting if two good teams are going at it and some scoring occurs.

Like even a 2-1 game can be pretty good.

But yeah it can be super boring and frustrating watching a 0-0 game.

I’d probably rather watch Ice Hockey even though it suffers from a lot of the same issues.

But at least with that you get players slamming each other into the glass and getting into fist fights…lol

Youth sports, especially soccer, has a very different objective in other countries than here. Most HS athletes in the US are trying to get scholarships, then get seen and go onto a pro-career or at the minimum get their education paid for ( the parents dream too) From age 12 kids in Europe involved in soccer at the highest level, are looking to go pro...you can sign on at 16 full time and at 12-14 you can commit to a club and play in their academy. Here in the US you generally stay in school until you are 18 then try college and then pro if you are good enough. The structure in Europe and South America for soccer is vastly different and has been in place for decades longer...its going to take a while for the US system to change and then it may not due to restrictions and parental goals for their kid....pay for play is also hurting the ethnic/lower income players here in the States...on the MLS level, I think they are being smart, limiting salaries and slowly building the stadiums and fan bases...most MLS teams now get large crowds on a regular basis...with vocal and viciferous fans..this is way better than when I came here in the late 80's...diatribe over! mea culpa..:-)
Pay for play is huge. The way we develop is also a big issue. Its a layered problem that would require a concentrated effort to truly fix. Not sure if we ever get to that point but maybe a world cup run including one upset moves the needle a little. If we can make the Quarter Finals and then somehow pull off a massive upset vs Uruguay or Spain(its not happening vs Spain but I can dream) then just maybe it causes a small shift at least. Right now with the way its been shaping up the I think we have a real shot at making it to the quarter finals.

Cool. I was a few years before you - 1977-80.
I was in graduate school and after my first year just didn't have the time.

But it was a blast.

We got a small stipend from the university which included travel funds and we played all over the place.

Coolest was probably So. Miss because we played in their football stadium even though there were maybe 25 people watching.

We had players from Japan and Germany and a few others I can't recall.

It was so much fun.

In case anyone is interested, it is in the US's best interest for there to be a winner in the Qatar vs Bosnia game. A tie would be the worst case scenario for us and mean we are facing a tougher opponent in the first knockout round

Since the USA's ticket to the next round is already punched, will they play mostly backups today?
A good chunk will probably be backups because as davefrat said we have a number of guys on yellow cards who will need to sit.

But a lot of the backups could be fun or interesting to watch. Excited to see guys like Reyna and Weah get more minutes.

Most likely rest anyone who is banged up or sitting on a yellow card. If he's 100% I wouldn't be surprised to see Pulisic play for a little bit just to keep him up to game speed, but that's about it.

So do the yellow cards go away after this first round or do they stay with the players for the entire World Cup?

They are wiped out after the group round now. They used to not be wiped out until after the quarterfinals but they changed it with the expansion to 48 countries. They are wiped out again after the quarterfinals.

But if you were to get a 2nd yellow in your last group game you would still be suspended for the next match

At a minimum you have to sit all the guys on yellows. That’s Adams, Jedi, Flo, Richards, and probably Pulisic for injury risk. Maybe give Pulisic a run late for 10-15 min so he can stretch his legs.

Looking forward to all the young guys getting a shot. This match means absolutely zero to us so will be interesting to see how this coach and these players perform. Will also display the quality of depth on this squad.

i played club ultimate at bama in the early 90s and it was a blast. getting to travel to the regional tourneys was always fun. we’d usually make 4-5 per semester
