Look, I get it - I really do - but the point is to the average person walking around or just checking the news this was a change, a walking back, that really couldn’t have been worse wrt timing. Had there not been so many thing the doubters (often luckily) got correct, along with the widespread abuse of public trust (everything from 6’ distances and plexiglass (not airtight) separators to forcibly shutting down people’s lives) we likely wouldn’t be having this discussion.

I will also grant you there was a lot of.....what's the word......theatrics involved. Let me tell you what happened in my laboratory - and I'm NOT making this up or exaggerating.

The powers that be decided we all needed protection so they......get this......came in and installed a plexiglass separator ON THE TABLE IN THE BREAKROOM. They also installed these on the tables in the lunch room once they reopened it.


REEEEAAAALLLLYYYY????

Again - a major part of the problem wasn't even the scientists who didn't want to be wrong. It was the fact we have a President who thinks in absolute black/white terms about EVERYTHING. And whose only understanding of the issue was, "How does this affect me staying in power?"

The smarter Presidents we've had in the TV age - all of them - would have had FAUCI or BIRX handling the questions and explaining the very thing you're talking about via nuance. "Look, we told you X, but we said up front we're going to be transparent and this is what has changed." YES - some clowns with the same level of thinking as Dear Leader would have raged online, but a lot of folks would have said, "Ok, I get it," too.

But one guy wanted the spotlight and the center of attention, so he got it.

But these things did happen, and the result is lots of people were hurt by some of these actions and now if something really bad comes along, a lot of people aren’t going to trust the government’s recommendations, even if they’re correct.

This has been a fun bone of contention with my "oh God, climate change is killing us tomorrow" alarmists.

Pointing out to them, "You couldn't even get people to wear masks or get shots but you're going to control what they eat, drive, and do AND THEY'RE JUST GONNA GO ALONG WITH IT" has been fun.

And I'm not a climate change denier at all except when our good leftist friends in the media change the definition of it to say, "Anyone who says X is a climate denier," speaking of goalpost moving.

There were 8 billion shots given. Assuming 2 shots (since some stopped there), a 1% death rate from the vaccine would be 40 million dead. Assuming 4 shots, 20 million dead. That would be 3x as many dead from the vaccine as the “official” count, which is likely undercounted unless you voted for Trump and seized upon “they’re counting car wreck deaths of positive Covid people as Covid deaths!”

Point being - if the vaccine was the problem, you’d know it without question.

That’s actually quite a common story, but I was saying this from day one. I warned my Oregon bud that if this thing went on longer than a few weeks, you were going to see the natives get restless and start resisting the proposed cures.

Once that happened, I made the point that how in the world are you going to regulate everyone’s diet and what they drive and their carbon footprint when you can’t even get people to wear a mask.

Joe Biden might well have won in a landslide except for the hypocritical messaging that came from the doctors, who, after telling us you couldn’t be near each other decided protests against the murder of George Floyd, with the requisite, tossing of statues into rivers, was a good thing.

Then they came out and tried to get us to believe that none of those were super spreader events because all of those people were distancing from each other, when we could all look on television and see they were not.

At that point, it was obvious they were either lying about the lethality of the disease or lying about the necessity of social distancing or lying about how many positives they were willing to attribute to all of those gatherings.

There was so much lying going on, from Trump on down. Thus far the Fauci thing seems to be more of “well, he was wrong about X,” but being wrong doesn’t constitute lying.

And I hope nobody at all was surprised that a doctor - especially one put in his position of dictation - is a massive egotist. They are like fighter pilots arrogance wise.

Well, less his lies and more his expertise guiding the response, such as the aforementioned 6' distances, plexiglass barriers, etc. These things were laughed at by deniers from the get go and when they were proved to be silly it just added fuel to the fire of that idea that the experts weren't.

Well, a quick internet search will show Fauci commonly used the phrase "follow the science" when pushing his ideas. IIRC, he even equated people questioning him to 'doubting science'.

And that's what we heard by the unified press / White House when repeating the recommendations that seemed silly (some of which turned to actually be so).

TPTB leveraged the expertise and had people jumping through hoops, kids missing entire years of school. business being shut down (and lost), etc. I get it was a novel virus but arguing from authority when you're guessing on a lot of things is an almost guaranteed way to screw up and undermine your future efforts.

It has become evident that the internet, social media, and other communication outlets with readily available data have contributed to the dissemination and availability of misleading information. It has perpetuated beliefs that led to vaccine avoidance, mask refusal, and utilization of medications with insignificant scientific data, ultimately contributing to increased morbidity. By March of 2020, the Koch Brothers and other right wing groups were already in full gear spreading misinformation and trying to force everyone to keep working. No regard at all for potential deaths and injury from a novel virus that we did not understand at the time. If nothing else, after six months and the British RECOVERY study on decadron published in June, we had a much better handle on what was needed supportive care wise, so those early lockdowns and closings helped hold the line.

Part of the Koch Brothers work included the Greater Barrington document... Which was basically a cover letter that had no statistical or research data to back it up, and not even a bare outline of how one carries out what they termed "targeted protection" when nearly 1/3 of the population has risk factors for severe COVID. It was written by Battarchaya and others without relevant knowledge of epidemiology to political specifications.

The 6 foot suggestion and many other recommendations may not have been as effective as desired and may seem silly, but they were common sense recs made at the request of many. The 6 foot distance is based on actual data derived from research into how infectious droplets and aerosols behave in terms of different viral and bacterial pathogens. It was not pulled out of thin air! Now, in fairness, that research needs a new batch of data and some work, but it does exist and that is how the 6 foot figure was derived.
