*** 2013 Fall Camp Thread ***

I hope TDP suspension is only a minor hiccup...but, yes, I think this defense will be better than last year's.

My guess is that this D is about as good as last year's. Last year's was the best defense in the country but was sort of ho-hum by Bama standards.

I think Pagan growth is going to be a big improvement in the pass rush. We really have not had a great pass rusher at DE since Dareus left. Depth on the DL is the question. Right now it seems that freshmen could be the rotational depth.

The 3-4 may not be a feature defense for DEs but the best units tend to have a DE who is a deceptively agile guy who builds his game off the bull rush. It opens things up for the OLBs when the DE is whooping people.

HaHa is obviously the star in the secondary. Look at Geno, Fulton, Belue, Perry, Sunseri, and Collins, though. Those guys have the experience they needed. The only way to learn Saban's scheme is to get the experience. The "stars" aren't there, but the talent and experience is.

What people don't remember is how bad the secondary was in 2010. The remember the great Dre or the all-American Milliner. Those guys struggled mightily that season. Geno and the rest were put in similar situations, more so Geno but they actually played better than Dre and Milliner at the same points in their careers. I think they'll do very well this year.

As for our safeties, I don't think there will be a better group in the nation. Those boys back there are nice and it will be an upgrade over 2012, which is saying a lot being that one just went pro!

Excellent point!

I reminded someone of that the other day - I don't think Milliner even started until last year. The 2011 starters at CB were Dre and Menzie.

What made 2011's D so good was Hightower. He was like a senior all-american QB would be to an offense. He was a stabilizing force for all of that talent. We need another leader like that, and hey, look who is back at LB this year... CJ Moseley. I think we'll be fine.

I agree except I would say CJ played as big of a role in getting people in position as Hightower did that year.

Probably true and also further solidifies his leadership ability (not that it hadn't been already).

2011 was full of leaders, not just talent. I feel like we will have that in 2013 as well.

The morning practice report showed Ragland and Dillon Lee (nickel) filling in on the 1st team D for Trey. I like both of these guys and I really like Lee. He has great instincts (had 1 interception last year and should have had 2 in the spring game).

100% agree. They will make a name for themselves by the end of the season.

I am hoping Tana Patrick makes a significant contribution this year. I believe this is his fifth year, and he has played some. Like to see him break out a little bit more.
