You know Mal Moore said he pretty much knew in 2007 after firing Shula his next coaching hire would be his last, one way or another. Meaning he either got it right or he was going to be gone.

It was that thought that pushed him to make a second run at Coach Saban after he had initially said “no”. And aren’t we glad he did?

I think AD’s these days take it almost as something that goes with the territory.

He rented a hotel room close to Saban’s house during Saban’s last game without Saban even agreeing to meet him. Jimmy Sexton called him mid flight and said don’t fly to Miami because there is no guarantee he will even talk to you. Mal said “ if I don’t have Nick on this plane coming back with me then I’m taking it to drop me off in Cuba”. Mal had some serious guts.

I've often wondered why Brett Bielema ever left Wisconsin. He had a great thing going there and just absolutely crashed and burned at Arkansas. I think he will may do very well at Illinois.

IIRC it had a lot to do with AD Barry Alvarez unwillingness to pay Bielema's assistant coaches commensurate with other B1G programs. That may not have been the only reason, but I do remember that as a sticking point.
