Regarding Tony Dow - I grew up watching "Beaver" in the Late 70s where the rumor was always that one of the cast members (usually Dow) had been killed in Vietnam. In 1984, we moved back to the US and our satellite had The Disney Channel before it became nutbaggery. They had a show called "The New Leave It To Beaver," so I enjoyed calling my mother in and saying, "Wally looks really good for a guy you told me died in Vietnam!" Then she told me maybe it was Eddie, but he was on the show, too.

In defense of Mom, there was no civilian internet in the early 70s, and she'd been told that by someone else. It was right up there with Cindy Brady missing the Christmas movie because she was a porn star and Procter and Gamble being a front for the Satanist church. Ah, to the days of urban legends and no Snopes!!!

I remember the Procter and Gamble rumor. I believe the rumor went that the president of the company was on Donahue (or one of the other talk shows) and announced that he was a member of the church of satan and all money was going to go to that. So lots of people warned to not buy the stuff. This was well before internet so no way of checking, back then we just had to believe utter garbage lies. I cannot believe the Tony Dow rumor was not attributed to The Mandela Effect aka alternate universe aka people's memories suck except yours.

There's even more to it than that, although your recollction is essentially what mine is.

I first heard it in the Fall of 1981 - and the story was told to us by someone at my private school who CLAIMED TO HAVE SEEN IT on Donahue. Not one of those "I heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend," but the claim of firsthand experience. I was 12 years old, but one thing puzzled me from the get-go - "why in a largely professing Christian country would anyone go on a show and claim to represent Satan like this?" It seemed to my simple mind to be stupid business to say the least.

I later learned PG wound up suing Amway successfully for passing on that rumor long after it had been debunked.

I think what caused it was a conglomeration of factors like:
- the actors were of the exact age to have gone to Vietnam
- serving your country is something the stereotypical "Beaver" family would do
- in those days when you weren't on TV, child actors kinda disappeared altogether
- Beaver himself actually DID serve in the Air Force Reserve during Vietnam (but didn't go over)
- Beaver was seen at the Emmy Awards in uniform in 1967 and wasn't seen for a long time after that
- Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell) was actually shot three times while a member of the LAPD

Take all those together and it's not unreasonable an active imagination "remembered" hearing Dow was killed in Vietnam.

That was how I heard it. Someone in my class said they saw it. The person that said it was not a known liar, but now I question everything she ever said. She is a Facebook doctor now, so there is that

Bill Russell is on my Mount Rushmore of the NBA. (MJ, Magic and Larry are the other three.)
Russell was the most athletic big man/warrior ever in the NBA. One game I recall growing up, the Celtics were down by 1 with 1-2 seconds left in the Garden. After time out Havlicek inbounded the ball at mid court with a perfect toss at the net, Russell caught the ball high above the rim and slammed it. After viewing his highlights practically any superlative one uses to describe Russell is an understatement.

"Heeey Wally?" "Yeah Beav?" "Hey Wally, well, I miss you." "I miss you too Beav." "Was it creepy and scary?" "Ah heck no, Beav, it was ... peaceful." "What's it like Wally?" "Well, it's a lot like Mayfield." "Mom and dad are here, Lumpy, heck, even that creep Eddie Haskell is here." "Really? Eddie got in?" "Yeah, I guess they took pity on him." "There's even a malt shop, me and Mary Ellen Rogers and all the guys and girls hang out after the Friday night game." "You get to play football and basketball too?" "Heck ya Beav and the the best part is, no one gets hurt." "Gee Wally, I can't wait to come there." "Well Beaver, you have time, but when you do, Mom, dad and me will be waiting."
