Game Thread: 2023 MLB Playoffs

Orioles are getting hammered today. Once again the team that got a bye is getting killed.
I have been saying it for decades. If you don't keep your foot on the gas all the way to the end of the season, you will lose in the playoffs. This is on the managers of these teams. It is why I think Bobby Cox was overrated as a manager.

Dodgers lose again.

Everyone said they were a shoe in for the NLCS.

They’re the Dodgers so I hate em and don’t feel sorry for them.

But objectively they are getting screwed by the same playoff format as us.

They finished 16 games higher than the D backs in their Division so why are they having to play them immediately in a short 5 game series?

It’s insanity and makes the regular season absolutely pointless.

Lucky for us we got off the mat tonight but we could easily be down 0-2 as well.

I can’t stand the way the playoffs seed and choose these matchups.

Ever since they had the plus 1 WC game it’s been hell on the #1 seed. But they did that for more chances for the Dodgers, Yankees, and Sox to get in. Why it gives an unfair advantage is because you give 1 team a head start in an emotional game while the other is coming in cold.

If they want to continue this then 3 things need to happen

1) Teams need to be re seeded after the WC round

2) While the division crown is an AQ… they are not an automatic top 3 seed.

3) the DS is played at one location.

But for the Dodgers… they got the easier draw out of the two of us. The reason the Dodgers are struggling is because their best pitcher is a guy on his last few years in the league. Once they lost Gonsolin and Urias it was over. Yes we have a bad situation ourselves but it’s not anywhere close to what LA is having to deal with.

Yeah like for this year after the WC round it should have been…

Braves vs D Backs and LA vs Philly

1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3

That’s based on overall team records for one but also prevents the Top seeds having to play the Division runners ups they just ran away from for the Division Title.

I don’t know how you correct for the Hot vs Cold dilemma though.

The Dodgers are cold like we were/are though.

Betts and Benedict Freeman are batting a combined .087

You mean just because he...
- blew a 3-1 lead over KC with probably the best team in baseball in 1985?
- blew a 3-2 Series lead over the Twins and lost both games in extra innings in 1991?
- blew a 3-1 lead over the Pirates only to get bailed out by the Sid slide in 1992?
- blew the 1993 playoffs against a mediocre Philly team?
- blew a 2-0 in games lead along with a 6-0 fifth inning lead in game 4 against the 96 Yanks?
- fell behind an overmatched San Diego team, 3-0, in 1998 and lost the series?
- blew a 2-1 series lead over the eventual NL champion Giants in 2002?
- lost in the LDS to an 88-win Cubs team despite MLB best record in 2003?

What manager hasn't managed to blow seven post-season series when his team was the best in the league?

Sadly, it's why I agree with you.

Cox was fantastic at spotting talent and putting together a team that could play together with minimal adversarial interactions (publicly at least).

He was a moron at knowing he needed a closer who could do the job or maintaining momentum.

I think the Dodgers record pretty regularly is some better than they really are due to their home record. Maybe they have a better home field advantage than most. Their road record was fourth best in MLB.

The truth is that GMs win divisions and managers win WS. You can load a roster in a way that it has a great chance to win a division but how you utilize it will determine where it is in October
