Barely old enough to see the end of the Ali era. Holmes was the big champ for most of my youth but he had zero charisma and was in Ali’s shadow. The lighter weights were the place to be through much of the 1980s.

Then Tyson came along and was everywhere. His collapse seemed inevitable once the sharks got control of him. The heavyweights remained relevant a bit after that but eventually faded away. I did attend Wilder’s first defense in Birmingham in 2015 just to say I had been to a heavyweight championship fight.

Boxing overall has declined for a number of reasons that would be fit for discussion elsewhere. Another sport you don’t hear as much about as you once did is horse racing.

"The way to catch a knuckleball is to wait until it stops rolling and then pick it up."

-Bob Uecker
"The biggest thrill a ballplayer can have is when your son takes after you. That happened when my Bobby was in his championship Little League game. He really showed me something. Struck out three times. Made an error that lost the game. Parents were throwing things at our car and swearing at us as we drove off. Gosh, I was proud."

Former NFL tight end Don Hasselbeck dies at age 70 - ESPN

Former NFL tight end Don Hasselbeck, who won a Super Bowl in his nine-year career and was the father of two NFL quarterbacks, died Monday. He was 70.

Matt Hasselbeck said his father died after going into cardiac arrest at his home.

"He was a great husband, father, grandfather, friend, coach, player, coworker, artist, mentor, and storyteller," Matt Hasselbeck wrote on social media. "Despite being an All-American at Colorado and a Super Bowl Champion with the Raiders, what we are most proud of is the leader he was for our family."

The elder Hasselbeck was drafted in the second round by the New England Patriots in 1977 after a standout college career at Colorado. He spent six seasons with the Patriots and led the team in catches in 1981 with 46, along with 808 yards receiving and six touchdowns

Tommy Helms, the slick-fielding infielder for the Reds who was the 1966 NL Rookie of the Year and had two short stints as the team’s manager, has died. He was 83. The Reds Hall of Fame and Museum said Helms’ wife, Cathy, told the organization that her husband died Sunday in Cincinnati. The cause of death wasn’t provided.

Helms was known more for his glove than his bat in 1,435 games over 14 seasons. He was an All-Star in 1967-68 and won Gold Gloves as the National League’s top-fielding second baseman in 1970-71, years in which he and shortstop Dave Concepcion formed the best double-play combination in the game.

When the Reds signed Helms out of Charlotte, North Carolina, as an amateur free agent in 1959, he was thought to be the team’s shortstop of the future. But while Helms was moving through the minor leagues, Leo Cárdenas was establishing himself as one of the major leagues’ best shortstops. When Helms earned a roster spot to start 1966, the Reds had him replace Pete Rose at second base and had Rose move to third. Rose couldn’t get comfortable at third, so Helms moved to the hot corner after just 20 games and became the NL’s second-leading fielding third baseman.
