I have said that since they changed coaches that part of what makes teams succeed is having the right guys that fit the system. Some of the people on the board don’t realize the change in schemes was going to need a complete overhaul. You had players brought in for one system and then after the coaching changes a completely different system. On defense we went from a 3-4 to a 4-2 front half. Players like Keeley are not guys that really fit the new system as he was recruited as a 3-4 outside linebacker that rushed the passer. He is a Tim Smith, Will Anderson type player as outside linebacker who rushes passer. In the new scheme he isn’t really big enough to play as 4 down man guys and coverage skills were not great.

The same with the offense with Grubb who wants to push the ball down the field. I don’t think Simpson is a great fit for that style. He still is a very solid quarterback but I think you still have a little bit of limitations as his arm is not top level. I would have said the exact same thing with Bryce Young who was one of the best quarterbacks we have ever had. He was great for the system we used but I wouldn’t want him as the ideal guy under this system.
Great post!

We need patience on this board.

A complete overhaul can't be accomplished in a single or even two seasons!

He was a recruit from Saban with the 3-4 defense and would have been a better fit for him as an outside linebacker rush guy similar to Will Anderson or Tim Smith. In the 4-2-5 defense we run he isn’t really big enough to be a defensive end and didn’t seem to have the coverage skills needed.
You do realize he’s taller and heavier than Will Anderson and will went to a 4-2-5 d in the nfl and hit the ground running right? He broke the Texans rookie sack record in a 4-2-5 in less than a years worth of time from being a 3-4 will

Great tape!

Can he pass block?

Does our RB coach team pass blocking at all? Or the OL coach work with the RB for pass blocking? Because I saw Jam turn right on one play and block nothing, while a guy came free from where he should have been blocking left. Our RB's see phantoms.

Entering the portal doesn't mean they are gone, just that options are being explored. I would guess we may retain a small handful of Tide entrants.

We do not know if the staff encouraged some of these moves.

As fans, we just have to wait and hope for the best. I see no need to panic if a non-productive unit sees large portal declarations - should we want to keep guys from a unit we all griped about ?

Actually, Keeley is a WAY better fit for our current system than our old one. For Saban, he was a tweener. Too small to be a DL, but was way to heavy to play olb. The new system and the bandit role is perfect for Keeley, Overton, Collins, etc.

word right now is that staff is working on keeping Keeley at Bama. lots of fans are rejoicing. let's see.
Ok ok coming in off the ledge then. But if he leaves and we don’t portal someone just as good I will go splat hahaha seriously though of all the portal entries this is the only one that bothers me. The rest would be great depth but none of them would be playing much outside of a rash of unforeseen injuries. Keeley (if he comes back) will be the starting bandit next year and a danged good one at that. Keely smith Simmons Pierre is solid. Pay them whatever it takes. No one cares about Coleman ESPECIALLY if Horton comes back.

THAT is why I asked if he can pass block.

Coming from Arizona State, I suspect that he can...

I'm to the point of, we don't have a choice and Byrne won't do it anyway....so DeBoer is our coach for 2026.

I think he's too soft on the players and his culture in the program is too soft. I think his offense is terrible and not suited for the SEC.....he isn't going to suddenly get a power running game....he's never had one. If he surprises me and does that, great....it means he's morphed his philosophy and might be fine.

Otherwise, I figure he's done after next year.

6 of the 8 losses he's had at Bama were embarrassments. Unprepared team meets unmitigated disaster....and this staff had no answers. He's turned the program into a joke and we're soft as tissue.

There's a fine line between getting blown out and winning a championship......I can't tell you how much that statement irks me.
I guess Saban was just a hair’s breadth from having 7 blowouts instead of 7 NCs. Boy, is that guy lucky!

@denver

Chill. Go for a walk. Breath. Drink a tea. You're overreacting to this. What Bama are doing right now, they're looking for starters to fill the OL, and also are looking for depth as well. They have to revamp the OL room. Stop looking at this from a starter perspective... Look at this from a fit, scheme and culture perspective. It's clearly showing that Bama is working to change the identity in the OL room and they're going to get their guys in.

What Bama are bringing in will be for both reasons: Starter and depth purposes. This goes for WR and DL room. With what Bama are bringing in for visits so far, I'm impressed with that, and they have couple more they're lining up for visits on Wednesday and rest of the week.

The transfer portal has allowed teams to not have to wait three and four years to rebuild. Curt Cignetti rebuilt Indiana into a championship team in less than two. Also, there are signs that there are foundational problems with DeBoer's culture. We've had too many games in the past two years where the team and the staff came out looking completely unprepared and not ready to play. It happens once, okay, it happens. But it happened three times last season and three times again this season with four of those being blowouts. We've been blownout THREE TIMES this season because the team showed up unprepared to compete.

We've got people watching us play and calling us "soft". There are signs we have a head coach that doesn't demand excellence. The last two years the second half of the season has ended the same way, with the team looking out of gas, physically tired and sloppy. That points to a culture and lack of discipline problem, not a talent problem. The product hes put on the field for two season now doesn't give me much confidence he is going to fix the things that need to be fixed. Im starting to think he's in over his head and doesn't have the personality to create the culture needed to take Bama back to the top. His post game comments after the Rose Bowl blowout kind of sealed the deal for me. Just a horrible choice of words after getting totally embarrassed.

Keely is faster off the snap than any other defender, inexcusable that these coaches cannot find a spot for him. A Keely and Yhonzae Pierre duo rush would be formidable.
