2027 Recruiting: 2027 Recruiting Thread

5* receiver Monshun Sales narrows to four schools: Bama, Miami, OSU, and Indiana.

Even though he currently lives in Indianapolis, he was raised in Bama and therefore Bama gets the friends and family edge, followed by IU. The two B1G schools get the current 'top of the mountain' edge, and OSU will need to replace Jeremiah Smith for Sales' freshman year, so that's a strong pitch for them.

I'm thinking that if NIL is relatively close it's a Bama/Indiana battle, with OSU a possibility and Miami not much of a chance.

Gotta think money will be more than a footnote here

For sure; how can it not be for a kid that is allowed to be paid and could blow his knee out every time he steps on the field.

But, in cases like this, money is often comparable, and with Sales each of the four remaining schools have the ability to match the 'market price'. So it's not like Sales is looking at $2 million from OSU and $500k from Bama.

And when the market has set the going rate, the other factors such as scheme, proximity, and especially connection with the staff carry the day.

Do you think this player is good enough to warrant breaking the bank on? Given a good but limited budget

Seems like OSU and UM can splurge on numerous guys but Bama may need to be more selective

I think that the order of funding for their programs, is 1) OSU, 2) IU (only now that their natty has activated big donors), 3) Miami, and 4) Bama, but that the differences are incremental and relatively small, not monumental and disqualifying.

I think that five star WRs can impact a team right away, and so he commands a much higher payday than say, a 5* freshman tight end or safety. There are exceptions, but generally that's true.

I think that each coach has priorities for spending, and that schools are weighing if he's worth the high dollar amount that could go to a proven portal kid. I also think that an impact freshman is a great get because he's too young to go pro after a year.

I also think that if the money is comparable that it's a Bama/IU race, and that growing up in Alabama and as a Bama fan makes Bama the (slight) favorite.

This may be where the staff has to really examine the character of an individual to see if they think they can "handle" being one of a few every year that we believe is deserving of "getting paid."

And if he is, this is the kind of "big splash" recruit that we need to sign almost every recruiting cycle.

Why? While we can't go big $$$ on every recruit, the fan base needs to get excited about the process. They get more interested and excited about the upcoming season.

If I have one complaint about the last portal recruitment, it is that we didn't have the one big splash guy that we "won" the arms race for. I imagine the RB we lost to Texas could have been the guy, but I think that loss took alot of wind out of our sails when we lost him.

So in the portal and in the traditional recruitment cycles, we need those splash guys each year.

One other thought...our recruitment of the 2027 receivers probably has a much to do with how well our new QB in '26 does on the field.

If he balls out and shows big potential for '26 and beyond, the best receivers will be lining up to come to Bama to catch balls from him!

Speaking of optics (splash), this is why I hope/believe it may be really important for Keelon Russell to win the starting job. There's alot a lot of expectations from his recruitment that suggests "star power" and this will matter to the fans and receivers who are looking forward to his play on the field.

It's why I think the fanbase and CKD's coaching staff "needs" KR to win the job. It'll fulfill the recruiting buzz around him and it'll provide the optimism our program needs after a couple of "average" years.
