It had to be more than the option, it was having a quarterback with a good arm that also just happens to run the option well, smart too. It put pressure on the linebackers and safeties and our speed could not keep up with the amount of field we were covering.

Should we have put more upfront?

We dropped out of the top 5 in total defense with this game we paid $400,000 to play :)

At this point, stats are meaningless. We will not have to face a team like that again this season. Let's just hope that USCw plays the Ducks close tonight or we could find ourselves hoping and praying again.

I disagree that stats are meaningless. Having the #1 defense is a definite talking point, and that's what the BCS is right now.

It is not the end all on the discussion, but any edge, especially being touted as one of the best all time defenses would have helped our chances much more than being #8 this year

What do you mean by "being #8"?

I believe you mean Alabama is no longer in the top five in rushing defense. We're still only giving up 78 YPG on the ground after this mess. We are also still #1 in many of the other major categories. We'll drop to #2 in scoring defense.

out of the top 5 in total defense. We had an off day by this defenses standards I would say. They did run the option, but I expected us to pick up on it better.

We had to cover a lot of field like I have not seen all year. We respected their passing game maybe too much?

I hope so.

We are still the best defense in the country. No one will look at the slight decline in our season stats and think that we now have an average defense. And look at how much the game HELPED our offensive stats.

IMO, the only problem will be if Oregon has a more impressive win. We wait and watch.

These last two games were are very important. We need to beat Auburn convincingly.

I still can;t believe this defense had 339 put up on them. I should think that GSU wins their championship.

What went wrong with the containment? Or are people just going to conclude that their offense was that good? Or not easy to coach against with a weeks practice?

I tend to say all, but that we maybe respected the pass a little too much and put a load on our linebackers to cover too much ground maybe. Just a thought.

And remember, this is supposed to be one of our all time great defenses, so this is a worthy topic without getting out of hand.

We played our standard defense. We were pretty disciplined. One thing to remember about the option - you do not have to block everyone if you run it correctly - and they run it perfectly - which gives you a one person blocking advantage on the edge if the safeties don't play up at the LOS.

Another thing to remember - for all their yardage, our defense only gave up 14 points, and only one scoring drive. All things considered, they did very well.

14 and 339 yards, I know. You also have to remember what our defense has done this year. You can't leave out reality and just talk about schemes. We had superior players, and I grew up playing and watching the option, we played them balanced, when I think we probably should have played the run more. We have NFL quality d-backs and probably could have scarificed another man on the option. I wish I could view the game again.

Yeah, but you are acting like the defense got smoked. All things considered, they did very, very well. With out best DTs in the game, we might have shut them out entirely.

Exactly. There are voters out there who are just looking for an excuse to drop us.

We did get smoked compared to other games. We are seeing this from different perspectives and I agree with you from your perspective. So to save the going back and forth, I'll let someone else jump in.

No, we're not. We're not even going to fall out of the top 1. Top 5 before this week:

Total Yards (YPG)
1. Bama 1814 (181.4)
2. LSU 2532 (253.2)
3. Penn State 2872 (287.2)
4. Temple 3055 (305.5)
5. Michigan 3179 (317.9)

Were did you get this info? Does it come out this early?
